So to the people who are confused about Alec throwing another Alec into the sea, I'll tell you what I think happened. Gabriel a lonely man wanted to throw away his grief and sadness,in the video it is portrayed by Alec throwing the other Alec (who is supposedly his grief and sadness) away into the sea. However,that grief and sadness always came back and never left him. And that's how I see the story. Thanks for your time.

OKAY TIME FOR UNCOVERING TIME i think the "gabriel" he was talking about is him, the dead body At the first verse it was all about how gabriel was responsible but was married young then he became a priest, where he comforted everyone. Then he realized (chorus) that he had no one to talk to, and he had no one since no one will probably listen to him? Again, he sets out on a journey to the sea (2nd verse?) Where he released all his feelings out to set him free of those. On the last part, "gabriel" returned home and sat down to eat the "fish" but the plate was empty, and the fish was said to be dead because of all the toxic waste of the people Remember that "gabriel" our friend was the one who kept all those "toxic waste" But there was the last part where it was said that "is gabriel responsible" But likewise in the video, alec dragged a dead body, which is himself I conclude that the dead body is "gabriel" Why? Because gabriel couldn't handle the responsibility of handling all the toxic waste of the people. Gabriel couldn't find anyone else to handle his waste either, so he set out to release his waste, and when he did the people had no one to release the waste so it ended up in the sea, killing all the fish there is in the sea Remember that "gabriel" was married young, indicating that maybe he is not responsible at all times and cannot be trusted with heavy responsibilities when he can't handle them Meanwhile in the video, alec throws his dead self in the lake or sea or ocean idc whereas maybe the dead body was "gabriel" because he couldn't handle the responsibility and killed himself wherein he is replaced by a new gabriel. I love how Alec's songwriting tells a literal story that filled with extrinsic and intrinsic forces that makes the song both easy to comprehend, yet still leaves this big mysterious gap that we have to figure out. Props to you, Alec!

Here my theory on this song: I believe Gabriel is what you would call a therapist friend almost but is buried deep within the problems the friends and people around him have. In the first few lyrics, *"Gabriel the oldest son he praised the Lord and married young became a priest at that confession cured the people of transgression Gabriel he held the weight of everybody's toxic waste and with the load upon his shoulder couldn't sleep as he got older"* I believe this shows he is burdened with the fact all the problems are piled on him. *"Oh oh oh what it means to be someone that everybody has to talk to everybody has to talk to oh oh oh Our Gabriel, he had no one that he could talk to Gabriel, he had no one that he could talk to..* *Looking for a place to be or some place he could hide his grief Gabriel ran to the beach and set out for the open sea heaved the baggage from the sands aboard the vessel with his hands and when he couldn't see the land released their sins on his command."* The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways. Depression, anxiety, etc. But, anxiety and stress is a perfect represention of what it felt for Gabriel. The problems become to real and it's become apart of his daily life. Which then these problems becomes his so he tries to get rid of them away. In doing so get shoves his problem (Alec in a bag) and kinda buries him beneath to get some sort of relief off. This was shown in the video. In the end, he calmly starts eating again but a knock is heard for the door. He gets up and opens it to see his and others own problems have came back, because one can not simply push problems aside and say "I'm okay" No, it's better to talk to someone but Gabriel didn't have this in a worry to put his own problems on someone else. *Soooo um yeah..tell me your thoughts..*

I'm reading people's interpretations and I decided to join in because I hate all of them. I think the line "the one everybody has to talk to" is really poignant because no one actually chooses to confide in Gabriel because of Gabriel. They talk to him because he's a priest, because of the obligation to go to confession. Gabriel is forced into the priest archetype for every one else's benefit. He's further stifled by his marriage--he was pressured into marrying young due to the nature of Christian society and experiences a resulting disconnect from his wife. He feels unheard and unrecognized because he's just seen as The Priest. So he decides to kill Gabriel. Clearly, he's unappreciated and unwanted, so he destroys every part of him that doesn't fit his role as a priest or a husband. But our minds aren't built to alter themselves like that, so his personality and feelings of inferiority return, damaged, but alive. And the line "but is Gabriel responsible?" means a lot to me as well. Is he responsible for his attempt to effectively kill himself? Is he responsible for everyone else's sins? Is he responsible for whether or not god forgives them? Is he responsible for making them feel heard? Fuck, even the perspective of the question is open to interpretation. Is he asking himself that, and if so, is it the priest part of him or the actual Gabriel? Is the narrator? Is it someone else entirely? I think that the question carries a different weight depending on who you perceive as asking the question. (Also I feel like this fits really well with If I Killed Someone For You)

I love this but it's really about suicide. "he had no one to talk to" and the bag he throws into the river represents himself. So at the ending it is Gabriel but he is dead. It's a great song, but the story of Gabriel is about suicide and how lonely he was so that was the last resort.
