This song represents two people that were best friends, as the boy grew up the robot grew more attached to their friendship, when alec had to leave for college, the robot was heartbroken, but they promised they would see each other soon, but then Alec met a girl and the bot had soon grew depressed and alone, the bot couldn't take it anymore, all the memories and good times haunted the bot when alone, so the bot wrote a note "I wasn't stable all alone" It means that the soul crushing fact that the memories kept the bot alive, and without more memories, the bot couldn't live, the bot did suicide and Alec had to throw him out, knowing why he did it, and as he named the song "I built a friend"...

i didn’t expect this to have me full on sobbing by the end. my “best friend” ghosted me about 2 months ago. she told me she needed time to tell her friends that they should stop judging our friendship so she said we could only text for now and not meet in person anymore and i said okay. we texted a bit then one day she stopped replying, next thing i know i check if she’s still following me and she unfollowed me on all social medias. crazy thing is she assured me that we’d still be best friends and she went on about how she wants me around in every special moment, we even cried and hugged each other on our senior walk and said we’d be friends forever. guess that friendship lasted almost 6 years and nothing more.

I lost my best friend after she left in the start of fourth grade...My "friend" said happily that she left...I feel so betrayed by my fake friend..I want my real friends back and my new real friends are very friendly and kind and now I am nostalgic feeling from this song since I used to find your music and got addicted to it...Your music makes sense and for a great reason!

i had a friend (Alina) and we met after we moved in next to each other, after about 3 years, i gave her one of those BFF necklaces, and me and her wore it every day. We would fall asleep with them on, and we did everything together. we shopped, we slept at each other's houses, we ate together, we hung out, you get the point. But when I was 16, she had to move to Colorado, and I moved to Georgia. we still kept in touch, but then we just drifted apart in our own lives, and then we just stopped talking completely. i remember that when we were 14, we made plans to spend our 21st together, and i remembered that when i turned 21. I gave her mum a call(I didn't have her number anymore) and i asked if I could have Alina's number, and then her mum broke out crying and said that Alina was dead. She had committed suicide when she was 17. I spent 4 years not knowing about her death, and I still blame myself for not being there for her. But this song hit really hard because it reminded me of her, and you know, all of a sudden when i realized she was gone, our necklace broke. Her mom sent her necklace back to me, and i got a bullet that said BFF and i filled it with some of her ashes. I love you Alina and You are always in my dreams I am always there for anyone that feels any emotions

Not in a bad way but make sure you occasionally ask them how they're doing, you might be the last knot or the urgent stitch they needed, we don't realize how much goes into our present hands, how much we can prevent, how much we can shape our future from this, and only this present moment.

This comment might not ever be noticed but worth a try. This song message in my opinion is what most kids and teen pass throughout years, I do know how it feels as I was one who passed through the same thing. People tend to be your friend and say that we will be friends forever but when they meet someone, that person slowly starts to forget that you were by his/her side for a long time ago. Things like that lead kids and teenagers to depression and sometimes (unfortunately) to suicide as they can’t see the future as a bright but lonely place. This hurts to watch as I’ve been through many years passing the same thing of losing friends because of other people and at the end, being all alone. Just know that you are not! You have friends and family to fight for, don’t ever give up on live, it’s not worth.

every time this song comes on shuffle, i think of my 'friend'. we listened to this song together, in a park. i wanted to turn the volume up, but he didn't want to be a nuisance so I turned it down. we had so much fun together, we held hands, hugged for hours, and talked for hours on end. we got lost together. he often asked me 'where would I be without you?', and he said we'd be 'forever'. I guess now he knows where he is, and that our 'love' was just infatuation. i deleted the pictures we had together, i deleted our texts full of banter and i tried to delete the memories of us together. and it's been quite a while, I admit that he's faded somewhat. but even if my mind forgets, my heart won't fully forget. i still tear up a little if i think of him. i often wonder how he's doing. a seven-month relationship with another guy couldn't completely erase him. rather, i was devastated at how he would feel once he knew about it but i simultaneously had a perverse desire to hurt him like he hurt me. but i've met a genuinely sweet guy now, and i hope he's met another friend too. i think, this is moving on. hi pufferfish-eating-carrot, i know you won't ever read this but you were my first love. i won't cling onto this anymore, and you'll always be a part of me. thank you, for being my friend.

A few hours ago, one of my closest friends came over to my apartment. I told her that I'd show her some of Alec's music, because she'd never heard of him. So we sat down in my room, and I turned on this song. When it was over, I asked her if she liked it, and she shot me a thumbs up. Her hand was shaking. Then she said "I like it, it's just sad." She sounded just about ready to cry. I noticed how watery her eyes looked. Then, she glanced at me and asked in a voice that I'll remember forever, "do you think th a the robot felt pain when he poured the water on his head?" I'm not quite sure why she asked that, or what she meant by it, but she sounded so sad that I didn't care. I said "I don't know," and then leaned over to give her a hug.

There are so many ways you could interpret this song. To me the robot represents the childhood of the boy and when he grows up, when he forgets how being a kid is, his friend dies and the boy realises that he isn't a kid anymore that he grew up, its kind of nostalgic or sad smh Kind of makes me think about the elephant in inside out. It could also be about a really old friend that you forget and live alone and someday you realise you lost this old friend and it's to late to get him back... or maybe that this friend killed himself and that the boy regrets that he left this friend alone and feels bad. Or maybe it's just about loosing someone very important for you when you grow up This song is so inspirational like wow

His childlike voice is what SELLS this video because we all know as a young kid, we all have wild imaginations and it sounds like it would be the perfect book report to write as something you did over summer break, but the duration of the friend he built only lasted that summer because it was so heartbroken and couldn't take the abandonment issues it had with its creator. I’ve been a fan of alec since I was 9, when his first album came out in 2018. He has come out with many songs since then, but this will always be my favourite one. The switch from “we knew we’d be friends forever” to “we thought we’d be friends for ever”, the downward spiral of their friendship as soon as they parted ways, the shock and instant sadness I felt when I first listened to this at 9 and heard “it fizzled and then it pooped and then it killed”, this song is truly beautiful.

To me this is what the song means. His friend was going through a lot and was very suicidal and depressed, Alec took a long time to build them up to a happy person and let them know there not alone. Alec had brung him out of his depressed stage.Theyhad a lot of fun together and they thought they would be friends forever. Alec had to go off and do his own thing while his friend stood back. He met a girl and got caught up in his own life and forgot about his old friend. When he came back he found that his friend had committed suicide because he was alone and he no one except Alec but when he left he felt empty, he felt like he had nobody so he left this world...idk if you guys agree but that's what I think it's about
