I know massive eruptions are unlikely and I don't want to scare people but we really need to take them more seriously. People mistake unlikeliness as being impossible.

More likely to wipe us out with no solution. Not enough ships visit us to even extract a million citizens to Australia. But at least minor eruptions are more likely. Although we could try the south island with cargo ships from our major ports just cut breathing holes in containers.

There has been a lot of big activity earthquake-wise (Indonesia, Taiwan and along the ring of fire in SW Pacific) lately, so this may just be a small indication of the disturbance being felt after quite a reasonable period of quiet.

considering that taupo is a super volcano, rated 2nd only to toba....n having massively erupted in the past, the last big one around 6-12 thousand years ago, as part of the sun-earth natural heinrich cycles...AND that the lake's temperature monitoring is also a valid watch, you would hope all features are VERY closely scrutinised, considering the earthquake upticks. it's not about being afraid. it's about awareness n preparation if a big change happens.

It's actually 3rd biggest active supervolcano. First is Toba, then Yellowstone and then Taupo.
@psalmerperena4120
@psalmerperena4120 Жыл бұрын
@@wildlifeisthewealthofnatur5457 It's more complicated than that. There are two Taupo volcanoes. One is the Taupo supervolcano itself. The other is the Taupo Volcanic Zone which is a group of volcanoes and supervolcanoes that the Taupo supervolcano itself is a part of. There are a total of 4 supervolcanoes in the Taupo Volcanic Zone with two that are still active, one dormant and the last one probably going to be extinct. The dormant and the near extinct one each are bigger than Taupo, as big as Yellowstone, but smaller than Toba. Oh and Toba is not even the biggest one even if we don't count extinct volcanoes.

@@psalmerperena4120 Means was there an eruption at Taupo even bigger than the one 26000 years ago? Yes, some extinct ones are even bigger than Toba. La garita, wah wah springs and flat landing brook formation.

In the past 1.55 million years there have been at least 4 super eruptions in New Zealand. At Mangakino 1.21 and 1.01 million years ago, 340,000 years ago at Whakamaru and 26,500 years ago at Taupō.

I don't want anyone to die or worldwide famine to occur, but large scale volcanic eruptions are cool to me. Seeing vast pyro flows being belched out of the ground for 10's of miles in all directions would be terrifying, but seeing a glowing cloud at night would be awe inspiring and very scary. Hearing people's first hand accounts of pyroclastic flows are terrifying, but the way they describe pyro flows is fascinating, calling them glowing/burning clouds. Anything the cloud touches is burned/set on fire, it's like a pyro flow is a lava flow on steroids.

We are already getting asked why GNS would raise the alert level now, for the first time in history, when there have been much worse unrest episodes in the past- and they didn't raise the alert level then? Not sure what to tell them, honestly. All I can figure is that through lessons learned, and never to second guess a volcano, they are being a bit more cautions, as there are many more people at risk now living close by. A statement from GNS on this would be appreciated.
@STUnknown
@STUnknown Жыл бұрын
It could be due to a recent change in the alert level system, as we have discovered. If so, then we can expect Alert Level 1 for Taupo from now on any time activity rises above background levels. Is this correct, GNS?

In my dad's lifetime , and my own , these last 10 years are the first rumblings there that we've known . The eruption of Ngarahoe in the 1960s , was noteable in that all east coast flights went out , and it was either train , bus , or car . Most of the ash from that went over Hawkes Bay & south Gisborne with most fertilizing the pacific - NZ's exclusive economic zone . Reuapehu was more lahars that came down , closing the Whangahu river at times , & the main rail line , sometimes SH1 , gets shut down due to ash fall , so diversion around the western arm , or the long way , around Taranaki , or up East Coast to Gisborne , then across at the Waioweka gorge - unless you want to go right around east cape , to check out white island . As for Taupo erupting in a big way , not for a long while , similar things have been happening around Yellowstone & some of the other American volcanoes .

Good Value so what did he say? We've changed the level to 1 *eeek* because we're come to understand the disaster better and now is more suited to a "one". - ye all understand that didn't you ? this is a "scientist" taking the piss out of you - He's Actually told you how it is in the shortest sentence possible. That's how I know this guys a scientist - believe me when a scientist has something to say the last thing you'll hear is his name - These people are Really Into What They are Doing and conveying that to a bunch of monkeys is an interruption to their day so knowing the monkeys have an attention span of the length of the adverts on TV - he spills the beans in the first line - I'm not a scientist so I'm going to have fun - This is Not the first Line lol This Scientist - The Cool Calm presentation is hiding the next terrifying explanation - "We've been looking" - What could possibly be the Harm in Looking. To the general Public "LOOKING" is the excuse use in a pub between partners snapped trying to hook up with another partner - it's called "Just Looking" Trust me Scientists Don't Just Look - and they don't come out and BLURT OUT "a Frequency that could lead to something More Destructive has begun" or There's a pattern of seismic we are seeing that in the past has led to activity that could be Egg-Sighting To a Scientist there's a Reason they've been looking - For example how many scientists are this much into if news paper are getting thinner - Naff All - Scientists spend their time doing interesting sh1t - not measuring how think paper is crist sake .. lol What he said is, and I'm Quoting from BlackAdder and Baldric's poem from the Trenches "BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM"
