The Alesis ADAT HD24 Digital Recorder replaces the 2" Tape Reel-to-Reel Tape Machines of traditional recording studios. High performance and mission-critical reliability, it appears on a computer network as a NAS device to transfer .WAV files over the network to your DAW.

I bought the HD24 when it was new and it still works well. I have never had it crash unlike some PC DAW's I also use.

That sure is a neat piece of gear. My Fostex DMT-8 is only 8 tracks, but has an analog mixer built in. Getting my ADATs ready to go, though. I do have the Alesis CD recorder for mastering.

Alesis was a GREAT innovative company back in the day. My Masterlink is one of my most favorite pieces of gear ever, and only recently died. I still use CD's for my small run vanity projects. It is most likely the hard disk, but I think the operating system is on it so I am not sure if it can be repaired.

VERY Cool!!!!! I'm still a fan of on screen editing, and the stability of SSD storage than the older hard disks, but I love to see these still in use! I'm in So. California, and there is a studio in town that is doing 32 track 2" tape!!! Thank you for posting this, very cool to watch!

You absolutely can replace existing storage and use SSD with an adapter. Even swap out the loud fan w/ a Silent 8.

OK, so here’s what I wanna do. I want to use the alesis as extra I/O going into my Rme interface. I also want to use the hard drive Spaces as a raid type situation for backups instead of my main hard drive….. two questions, how good are the converters? And can these be set up as a raid type situation?

Nice review, can you bounce a stereo track as a master mix in the HD24? I would not like to use the computer for processing the tracks, what would be he use of the analog gear then?
@RobertLee-tv4hc

Just take two playback tracks prerecorded from the HD24 and route it back through your interface/mixer, run it through whatever outboard gear you like then assign the channel to the track you want to bounce it onto. I use a Mackie 24x8 mixer to do this. I will usually record a dry track then add my compression and or effects on another track just in case I want to change it later. If you record your track with effects and decide you don't like it, you cant change it and have to re-record it. Hope this helps. *(edit typo)

Hey man, I see that you love the Hd24. I just got one and it works. The end numbers of the serial number tag is missing. I was womdering if you jnew a way to check the model fir like bit ratio. The early models had 16. Later it was 24bit. Thought it would be accessable in memory of machine.

The HD24 is at least 24-bit if not more. I know it can do 96kHz, but I never use that.

Nope. Stock all the way, baby - meets my needs. I don't record in my control room, but even so, I've never noticed much fan noise etc.

I did the same with my first one and regreted it. I did find another one in mint condition for $300 from a local studio.

Is anyone interested in a HD 24 with SSD for 500€ and a HD24XR with two HDD for 800€? Both with fireport unused and almost in perfect condition, I could put it for sale on ebay or reverb if anyone is interested.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. I'm sure it would sell quickly at those prices. My original unit cost $1,400 new. I picked up a second unit used for $300 from a local studio, it had only one hard drive.
