Those drums still sound convincingly real even by today's standards. Maybe I might buy an SR-18 in the future, in fact this is more like a bass and drums sound module especially if you midi it up to a keyboard or a sequencer. The SR-16 is great if you want more digitized sounding drums which is why I recently bought an SR-16.

Both SR18 and SR-16 will save your custom patterns, but you gotta save them. If you don't, when you shut it off and power it back on, it won't save what you had programmed in RAM - which is temporary memory only. You have to press the "Save" function to save your patterns (and/or custom drum kits) to User memory before powering off. Read the manual for more info on how to do this (you gotta scroll through a menu using the up/down arrows - which is not super intuitive until you read the manual): 7132afa424c2f1a2ab6d-54d68a14e2e7c1f76563a2d8c3e9fd82.ssl.cf2.rackcdn.com/920/documents/SR16%20Reference%20Rev%20C.pdf If you still can't get it, let me know, I know the SR-16 inside and out, I can make a video showing how to do it.

Good video demonstration. Is there a major difference between the Alesis SR18 with 100 drum patterns and the model with 200 patterns, other than the price and obviously more options? Also would this drum machine be better than the Akai MPD218? I like the Alesis because it "seems" to have more already programed patterns rather than creating a part part for a song from scratch.
@SynthManiaDotCom3 жыл бұрын
The model with 100 patterns is called SR-16 and it's much, much older (1990). The current SR18 model has the 200 sounds, more variety, and better audio quality. Both are good drum machines. The AKAI MPD218 is a MIDI controller that requires a computer to be connected to it to work - it doesn't have built-in sounds like the Alesis drum machines have - although it comes with free samples from AKAI, Ableton, and Sonivox.

Hi Paolo. I recently discovered your website and I'm feeling much gratitude for the insights your careful accumulation of technique and information have given me into the workings of my Peavey Spectrum Bass and my E-mu Proteus/1. Many, many thanks. I don't have an SR18, but I do have an SR16 and also a Roland TD-3 sound module; both of which I drive from a Beatstep Pro 'cos that's a helluva lot easier than trying to program the Alesis and changes/mutes can be made on-the-fly. I'm wondering if you (or anyone) know of a way of cross-fading between two drum modules (one handed) so that one can be program changed while silenced and then faded back into? I have a multi-channel mixer board but it's quite difficult to move the sliders in opposition in sync. I've thought of getting a DJ mixer with a cross fader, but it seems like they only come with phono level input rather than line level and I'm presuming that'll give way more distortion than I actually want. Any suggestions?
@SynthManiaDotCom2 жыл бұрын
Paul, thank you very much - there are mixers with cross-fader that have both Phono and Line inputs, for example the Behringer NOX101 is just 110 bucks; the Numark M2 is 120 bucks; the Reloop RMX-10BT is 200 bucks and has bluetooth. If you look on the used market, you can get older models as well. Good luck!
