I started climbing in '69. You could quickly see how climbing/mountaineering was changing. I still love watching and reading about sport climbing but I think in general we've lost a deep connection with Nature and the mountain. One thing I valued all along and regret how little I had was vision. Being able to see what could be done and how to get there. Cedar is right, Peter Croft was and is such and incredible visionary. IMO there would be no Alex without Peter. And there would probably be no Peter without people like Paul Preuss. Honor to you all "adventurers and strong hardy spirits!" Grateful for you and your career Cedar.

Glad to see a bit about his paragliding pursuits there toward the end. He's part of a next wave of pilot athletes from the US to get accepted to partake in the Red Bull X-Alps. Could be his biggest sufferfest of all if the flying conditions are shit. The haters in the comments don't seem to get his sense of humor.

I've see this happen in many people. Someone doesn't have their life together, then they find something that makes it better and they go into the other extreme and make their entire life about that thing and feel like it's theirs. Like people who convert to a religion become the most fanatical nuts because they've got something to prove. This guy might say that all new climbers aren't "real climbers".. but that's just like.. an opinion.. dude.

@@dailyclimbing If thats his way, its not a nice way. Whilst i know too little about him in general to judge him as a person, i strongly dislike this kind of talking about what is "proper" or "real". Basicly what he is expressing in a way is, that you are not a cool person if you don't risk your life or not doing it his way. Not very charming. I really enjoy all your videos but this interview doesn't shine a very bright light.

The term for what Cedar is doing is “gatekeeping”
@zacharylaschober
@zacharylaschober Жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t say Cedar is gatekeeping or putting down other climbers, he refers to them as climbers for this reason, he is contrasting what he does and was experienced with being “Climbing” while modern climbers are “climbing”. He just has an unpolished way about him, and I think this has plenty to do with his facial expression and gesturing. Course, there are people who are honestly confrontational about “Climbing” in a preferred style and sound alike Cedar.

I love like he says that climbers nowadays arent adventurous and at the same time there are like 12 years old kids climbing 10 meter highballs, taking big whippers on really hard sportsroute. Most people take the safe route maybe, but the number of peoole doing crazy shit is through the roof as well, it's getting tiresome the "good old days" attitude, go invent a sport and be the only one to do it if you wanna be a hipster.

Man, I have never liked people saying, "Okay Boomer," but the way this dude talks about the current generation of climbers? There are plenty of climbers (and other extreme sport athletes) who are doing s*** he would have never dreamed of doing. But as climbing became more popular, of course there would be more people who are not there to push insane limits. They want to have a little fun climbing and get back to their jobs. And maybe spend some of the money they earn on North Face gear. And since North Face paid this guy's salary, a little less elitism might be nice.

I rlly like Cedars view here. Climbing shouldnt be totally safe all the time. There should be some danger and being able to face and overcome dangerous situations is a big part of being a complete climber
@zacharylaschober
@zacharylaschober Жыл бұрын
Disagree but to the extent climbing should be as safe as possible within the scope of the preferred style. I sport climb to basically not think about the injury risk, quick assessment of any worrisome fall zones, check the bolts in the area are good, be with a confident partner, stick clip to avoid ground falls, and similar. However, what I don’t want is a sterile experience, and I have no disapproval for experiences which are a little more exposed, mentally provoking, etc., as I do enjoy a good nighttime highball, just danger isn’t what I am often after.

@aaronwalker8847
@aaronwalker8847 Жыл бұрын
@@moonti6820 I ain't judgin him. He seems like a nice enough fellar, probably a good climber too. But alex is underated if anything. Cuz he is humble and don't go around tootin his own horn. And he climbs because he loves nature and climbing, not to show off. Alex is one of the wisest, yet boldest climbers in the world. He raised the bar in the climbing world drastically, and has earned bragging rights, but he don't brag , nor claim to be better than anyone. He might actually become the first old bold climber ever. If he has time before the world goes to poop. "There is old climbers and there is bold climbers, but aint no old bold climbers". He might be the forst, cuz he is a genuinly good hearted , humble dude. So I get defensive when folks talk about him, and I didn know this dude and alex were good friends. I wish hed get out of that like habit though. I can't understand what he is talking about for all of the likes. I aint judgin him though. I used to have that same habit with "you know what Im sayin". @@davesmith1588 naw I couldn't get past all of the likes to understand what he was saying. I gave up on trying to watch. And I get defensive when anyone says alex is overrated , if anything, he is underrated. He is one of the best climbers in the world, and yet hes one of the most humble climbers. They broke the mold when they made alex, and I doubt any will come after him. All of the other world class climbers let it go to their heads and get greedy, and them they die.
