Physical therapist here. The thing to consider when testing grip strength is placement of fingers while testing. There are four muscles that flex 3 joints of each finger, each one doing a specific job. The most important one for climbers being the flexor digitorum profundus which is only muscle to flex all three finger joints (DIP, PIP, MP). DIP being distal or joint furthest away from body. When hes climbing he’s promoting that joint and muscle the most. However, the grip test has him measuring PIP and MPs only bc his finger pads are not being test. This means the muscle he uses the most is not being tested. It is possible that he might not need handshake grip strength muscles to be as active bc theyre not used as much when climbing.

Not to hate on Sanni, she seems like a nice girl, but how the documentary portrays her makes her seem like she is holding back Alex's potential, she represents normality, the very opposite of Alex. Maybe Sanni bringing some balance to his life would be a positive thing, but personally I think her idea of life is the polar opposite of his. To get off-topic, i do wish there was more footage of the actual free solo at the end. I would love a special edition feature where you can watch the entire climb.

They did not portray her like that -- you saw her like that. More than likely, they wanted to portray her as the emotional element to the story and to create a sense of, 'hey kids, it's better to get a wife than die on rocks'. Not disagreeing with you but I found these numbers to be interesting. I read that 40.5 kg is an average grip strength for a 30 year old, and that's just over 88 pounds. Then I saw the web page below appearing to show the same measuring device and it's numbers are way higher than that. But it also says source and population group unknown. And they list examples like the average NHL hockey player having 127 lb grip strength. I'm surprised he didn't register higher, but I'm guessing that his endurance, and the number of times he could squeeze and grip is over the top. Or if they had a device just showing the fingers clinching he'd be at the top scale. \www.topendsports.com/testing/tests/handgrip.htm

@@makersmike2959 yeah yours is more correct that the original comment. Rock climbers have incredible endurance, so I'm not taking anything away from them, but if you see this guy without his shirt on he realized that he doesn't have a ton of muscle. His frame is incredibly light so that he doesn't need to have a bunch of muscle to lift himself, he mostly uses his tendons to hold him up. Thank you for brinning up a common misconception. Grip strength just like all strength is sports releated. You never use this kind of crush grip when you are climbing so you don't have to be strong here.
