Full film now streaming on Reel Rock Unlimited: reelrocktour.com/
Last October, Honnold set out to climb the entire skyline of his backyard stomping grounds, the Red Rock range in Las Vegas, NV, calling the challenge "Honnold's Ultimate Red Rock Traverse" (The HURT). In 32 hours of nonstop running, scrambling, and soloing, he covered 35 miles of rugged desert terrain, with over 150 pitches of free solo climbing - both up and down - and logged 25,000+ vertical feet of elevation gain.
Catch the world premiere of the new 35 minute film as part of Reel Rock 17, streaming exclusively on Reel Rock Unlimited starting Thursday, April 20.

To everyone saying: "please retire we want you to have a long life": You probably don't get it... Alex Honnold only feels alive when he ACTUALLY is doing Free Solos. His Amygdala (part of the Brain where fear but also excitement is born only reacts to high pressure e.g. Free Soloing. How could you wish someone a long live without excitement and a life, without him having fun. It is like saying "stay in your boring but not fulfilling life forever... main point you life is long" Everbody has to die one day, and whether it is short or long... the main point is you have nothing to regret in the end. GOOD LUCK ALEX WITH LIVING YOUR LIFE AS YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE IT!❤

As much as I generally agree with that sentiment, he has a family which includes a new born child. I feel like when that happens, you have more than just yourself to think about. Rock climbing is cool. A risk like doing it 200ft up in pitch dark with no sleep when you’ve got a newborn child and a wife, isn’t.
@djoniebie

well... that reasoning is what is called a fallacy and it might surprise: laziness. you probably don't get it :) read about the amygdalae (there's 2 of them) before arguing. but at least look up nonduality so you can understand that maybe... life might not be about individualism in the first place. a surprise in this day and age. btw climbing and firing amygdalae is ok, there is nothing wrong with it but not climbing and not firing amygdalae is ok too. it's not one or the other, nor both, nor the opposite of both. it's just not being lazy in one's outlook.

@@djoniebie First of all I know that the Amygdalae are on both side of the Brain but most important is the left sided Amygdala for creating good emotions, aswell as negative ones. I am german, and my english is honestly not the best, but I have a pretty decent understanding of the brain and its chemistry. In "Free Solo" Alex' first Movie he had an MRI and the Neurologists told him afterwards that it is indeed like I said it, so even if it might be the "Urbach-Wiethe-Syndrome" it doesn't change the fact that his left sided Amygdala mainly activates when he is indeed doing things like free soloing and thus giving him good emotional, excitement and even happiness. Sorry for broken english, I am german...

Im into climbing or whateve i call it because of Alex, and my friend Charles who passed away a few years ago. I read he was one of the Stonemasters, but the guy was so cool he never mentioned it. Met him on the tennis court. I was like, wait, past great climbers can be good tennis players...let's test the reverse. I miss this dude so much I just started watching climbing vids and looking up at mountains saying, this year, im gonna do this one, and this one, and this one. Ledme to vids of Alex. This year I just snow climbed a bunch of stuff on and around San Jacinto near palm springs. There are boulders, and the face of San Jacinto, and Snow Creek canyon , this super steep escarpment that is a like 5000 foot snow tongue right over the desert windmills My body told me I need to get more fit and strong, cause each approach and some failed attempts left me exhaused, or with a jacked up knee or arm, what gear do I need for making a success next time, etc. Build back better. But for real, no the political ineffectiveness. Read this book Freedom of the Hills, not ready for all of that yet. But, I figured, as I train my body to withstand the body weight transitions, flexibilty and strength development and stamina that doing this stuff demands, i'd heal everything up for tennis. Totally worth it. Deadlifts pullups diet lots of pulling and hanging. Literally transformed me aging tennis player to a youthful machine. I sketched and planned a climbing wall at the house that slides from the bottom and top, for adjusting the angle of the wall. You could climb or crawl horizontally (if desired) to well past vertical whatever you are able to do. That way I can do a little whenever Im working around the house. Maybe someday i will be good enough to do some cool stuff. But for me it's just one hold at a time, increasing the vertical as i am comfy. I totally see how you could hone your skills in a gym and then be pretty blind when you actually go climbing. It is true freedom getting up a mountain, all of your problems are literally way down there, they look smaller, and it feels so jacked just to be on an incline, maybe suffering, maybe your body is saying, hey man, just stop right here, goto sleep, whatever. But that breeds focus. All this winter I have been saying the mountain doesn't lie. It tells you exactly where you stand physically, and kind of shows you what you need to do to earn it's respect, and that process can really transform you, crystallize what is important, for me it's phenomenal to feel like that, to watch the body conform to the mind's demands. Slowly debunking the idea of chronological aging and making it more of a concept to challenge. So I really am grateful the the way Ive known some super chill people who happen to be good climbers. Always love hiking, snowboarding and backcountry approaches, never though I had any place actually climbing. Now it doesn't seem too far away. Watching Alex, and especially his demeanor some might call it mindset, made many confirmations and impressions on me, not just about this new climbing thing I like, but about habitual mental focus on the things important to oneself, not trying to be anythign else but what you like to do. Super stoked to see this play out. Intrigued by this new era of climbers that are just so good, and to them, these super tough segments look like no big deal. That's incredible.

I'm not hoping for it, I like Alex very much, but implying that he is not a dare devil is the stupidest thing I've read in a long time. Free soloing is incredibly dangerous, and not just skill dependent: Rock can break or rockfall can happen at any moment or a snake in a crack could bite him or a hundred other things, even without any fault of the climber. @@matt-lo8ut You shouldn't bring a human into the world if you're going to actively risk your life for fun regularly. It's pretty much a matter of when is he going to make the child fatherless not if (If he continues doing this). As soon as you're responsible for a child, you shouldn't do that anymore. It was a mistake for you to bring a child into the world and you should either find a hobby that doesn't give you a high likelihood of dying young or let the child be adopted by someone else.

@@matt-lo8ut It's fine to be a free spirit and pursue your passion no matter how risky it is, but when you make a decision to start a family like him you need to dial it back because you have people that would be absolutely devastated if something were to happen, it's very selfish of him.

His life isn’t just his life now. Dude’s literally gonna subject his child to losing a parent likely at a young age and do irreparable harm. You have to be pretty fucking dense to think that’s ok. If he were doing heroin instead, people would have a significantly different opinion of his actions because it’s a lot less cool

I know he's got a kind of a reputation as "the gumby's favourite climber", but I think Alex really may very well be the best soloist who's ever lived. He's the _Ondra_ of adventure climbing. **edit** Guys, I know I'm talking up Alex, but do remember that he didn't _invent_ soloing. There's plenty of _legends_ who came before him.

Sketchiest thing at red rock is sticking your hand in a hold, and it rattles at you. I came face to face with baby rattler snake there (like I looked in, and 6 inches from my face is the snake). Babies are particularly dangerous because they can not control their venom release. It freaked me out so bad I did not climb there for 6 months. I finally went back, to do the same climb, same hole, and sure enough there was the same snake. 😆
