You're obviously tone deaf and can't hear that this guitar is out of tune for the entire recording. Alex changes guitars multiple times and his guitars are all retuned after every change by his guitar tech using an electronic tuner.

This purports to be the signal from Alex's guitar going into his rig. Makes sense why you hear the audio dropouts (random shwooshes) when his receiver loses contact as he turns and writhes on stage.

I ran this from my phone into my pedalboard into my fullstack tube/ss guitar rig. I was able to use my chorus pedal, distortions, delays, and reverbs at all the right parts of each song and absolutely *nail* the way it would sound through a rig onstage and fed through front-of-house. It was a blast to be stoned while doing it, and even better, the neighbors now have to think I am a guitar *god.*

Hahahah Ok this is for all of those people who have no clue to what is going on here. Some people are claiming this is no way Alex. You're wrong. This is 100% for sure Alex and taped from a live show. Let me explain this to you very clearly and easily. I am a 55 year old lifelong guitar player (40)years and have studied Alex and his finger picking ways at the top of my list since I started and I have tinkered with wireless transmitters my entire life. This is Alex and this is the raw recording from an instrument at a concert. This is what is happening here. I was also doing this in the late 80's. I would sit outside the Salt Palace here in Salt Lake City and would listen to the wireless transmitters coming from inside the arena from the bands instruments. Since I was outside the arena I got much more static than you all are hearing on this recording and I never thought to record some of what I was hearing but I wish I would have. I sure listened to some pretty big bands back in the day. And also any event that used wireless mic or instruments. The circus, comedy shows etc. The reason this sounds a little out of tune (sometimes) is because it was recorded on a cassette. They are and have never been exact on keeping a perfect speed, thus some warble or tune issues and obviously recorded from inside the arena so much better reception. The Transmitter is connected to the guitar and that is the only signal transmitted to the receivers on stage. Its always been that way and still happens the same way today. The receiver the guitar is transmitting to is right up there within feet from Alex and it will never have the static or warble you all are hearing. This guys receiver was obviously just a little bit further but not further than say a few hundred feet or so but definitely inside the arena. The on-stage receiver placed at Alex's feet next to his pedal board then takes that signal from the guitar and feeds it to the pedal and effects boards and then out to the amps so there will never be any static that we can hear sometimes. There is nothing mysterious about this recording. This still is in use today at all concerts that use wireless transmitters EXCEPT....... The wireless transmitter today have digital and scrambling features that make it almost impossible to interfere with, listen to, or record. Back then, in the 90's the transmitter signal at the guitar was analog and transmitted around the 200MHZ range and easily monitored with a simple police/scanner that had military freq unlocked (which was in the 200MHZ to 250MHZ band) then the input was fed into the cassette recorder. Very simple. My guess, It was a scanner savvy roadie or someone pretty close to the stage like maybe an arena worker. Very nice catch. I wish I would have thought to record some of my intercepts. I was maybe a half block from the stage AND outside and could hear their transmissions pretty good but not this good. It would be epic to have those today... Aerosmith, Kansas, black Sabbath, Kiss, ...... I would scan around that band (which was not very big) and find the different instruments that used wireless. Wireless mics were also used and I remember very well a wasted and drunk Joan Jett wirless mic that sounded absolutely horrid without the music but was very faint in the background. Wow, this is a very cool recording. Well done. The Better question here is........... If he went to this extent to record this wireless frequency of the guitar why didn't he do Geddy's bass at the same time. Maybe he did? Where is it? He had to have done more.

So I'm a drummer that wasn't around in the 90's to know about the technology. I know Alex frequently switches guitars during performances. Are they all on the same radio frequency? How would he turn one on and off?
@prplepopsicle
@prplepopsicle 2 жыл бұрын
@@niftyfiftytwo1484 When they switched instruments he just unplugged it like normal and plugged in the new guitar. The transmitter was attached to the back of his belt and it had a short cable with a 1/4in mono that plugged into the guitar like normal. The receiver was plugged into his effects board and really you could plug anything into it. Even a microphone and it would be routed into the pedal board. Each brand has DIP switches in the transmitter and the receiver so that you can use one of the preset freq it has by setting those DIP switches. Back then it was around the 206MHZ to 210MHZ or something very close to that range. Geddy might have been wired or he would have had the same brand and just set the DIP switches differently. You would always want to use the same Brand to assure two sets of freq would not interfere with each other. If it would have been me and I was thinking about recording this, I would have had two or three seperate scanners, then when the concert started I would have search for both or any wireless device. Maybe even catch the mic if it was wireless. This Alex recording is priceless. If he did record Geds, that would also be a priceless recording. I would so love to hear a full concert of those bass runs. Could you imagine? I was so stupid for not recording. What a huge fail. What a punk kid I was. I would pull up to the Salt Palace and turn it on and find the mic and laugh, then find the guitar and laugh then just leave. This was an amazing missed opportunity. At black Sabbath 40 years ago I even keyed up a modified radio once I found the freq while I was at the show and it actually made a horrible noise through all the speakers. Scared the shit of me and never did it again. But I am sure it started to happen a lot at bigger venues and cities probably some Idiot that did it until they shut down the shows. So they had to start using digital encrypted units more discriminative to outside interference where it is today.

YYZ got its airing during the encore but it was hard to see anything he was doing on the guitar because he was playing cat and mouse with Geddy, chasing him around the stage, even off stage behind the amp stacks, and the whole time Neil was laughing away behind his kit. Made no difference to their playing. As you can imagine, at the close of the show I was one completely awestruck teenager.

I’m not an expert but I do recognize the sound of wireless interference in this. It sounds like someone, whether in the audience or sound crew, was able to record the output straight from his wireless guitar rig. And on a technical level I can’t think of any other way to do this, since even the sound engineer wouldn’t be getting a feed of his raw guitar to record.

If anyone is interested I downloaded the audio from this and Re-amped it, the video is on my channel. And obviously yes this is clearly Alex playing, you can hear the RF interference, and all of his normal habits. The video on my channel is titled "Re-amping Alex Lifeson's DI from 1992". I obviously don't make money off of this. Enjoy!

I wonder what Alex himself would make of recordings like these. His playing is totally naked and exposed. There are tiny flubs everywhere, but none of would have made any difference during an actual live show, especially after running through his guitar rig and wet with effects. This recording does demonstrate the unique approach he takes to his role in the band. Lots of open, chimey chords with embellishments played over the ringing notes, hinting at a classical guitar influence. This would be borrowed heavily from Lifeson by the likes of Ty Tabor. This can be a hard listen at points, but it is a VERY instructive and insightful glimpse behind the curtain into one of the main components of the Rush sound. Thank you for posting this.

Listen to the full set, and you will have heard every single sound a high end guitar can make, a few it probably should not make, and several that it simply can not make for you, me, and any other guitarist but Alex Lifeson, and that is pure magic!

Pretty cool. I was at this show with my (future) wife. We had already seen Rush on the Roll the Bones tour at the Arena in STL the previous fall ('91), and I remember this show was the following summer outside at Riverport Amphitheatre. We were living in Carbondale, IL, and it was literally a last minute decision on Friday after work to drive up to STL and see them. We got there a little late, bought tickets at the ticket window, and missed the opener (I can't remember who the opener was - Eric Johnson? Mr. Big? - we missed it). We walked in and found our seats - which were way down front, off to the side very near Alex (!), at the break before Rush came on. Great memory.

The static makes a lot of sense, actually. If the date is real, this was done at a time when recordings and photos at concerts were stil banned - there were no smartphones then. There were also no long-life lithium batteries, etc. - this setup needed electricity to record a full show. The person who would have bootlegged this would have had to have worked at the arena and wouldn't have been doing this from inside the concert hall. He would have been in a room off to the side or in a private booth to have the electricty and privacy to do this - somewhere the radio signal from the guitar wouldn't have been as strong.

My grandpa was a valet at a nearby restaurant who also was an amateur musical scientist. My grandma was a retired prostitute with webbed feet named Chloe. In any case, my grandpa may have been the guy that recorded this as he lived in the St. Louis area, was a huge Rush fan, and had access to the venue and the gear needed to record this. Also, someone at the venue grabbed his sausage. The last time someone did that, he had to get remarried.

Very cool. First, this makes me realize that I've been playing a lot of Rush songs wrong ha ha! Second, Having been around at the advent of widespread wireless guitar use I always assumed that one could "catch" these signals using some type of scanner but it was never more than just a thought though some of the geeks I knew then talked about it and might have done it... Anyway, I was always after the isolated amped signals from live guitars but this offers greater insight into what he is picking and when. Now, I wish there were more of these types of bootlegs.

Many many years ago I was a Rush bootlegger and I had a recording of Alex's inner ear monitor for the whole show. You could hear his vocals, but the mix was mostly guitar and just enough of those others two guys. The shows was called "Stick It Out, Alex" from Toronto 1997, not to be confused with the "An Evening With Rush" SB in Toronto 1997. I just checked my files and the evening show files are in the stick it out folder, I screwed up somewhere.

what this actually proves is that because Neil (RIP) and Geddy are SO PRECISE , Alex HAS TO play around them, so his accenting is all over the place!I Alex never played things the same exact way twice, EVER! And he was so humble and down to earth, it even comes through in his playing. He left the bombast to Neil, and the Virtuosity and Emotion to Geddy. I think he knew how lucky he was to be playing with those guys, and he was just trying to add flavor and colour to the sauce....

All of them made little mistakes in every single show they ever did. It’s impossible not to when youre playing this many songs every single night. Theyve also had some pretty disasterous train wrecks. Neils had some good ones where he totally forgot where he was in a song lol. It happens. Doesnt really matter live bc overall they were good. And it was so damn loud you never notice the mistakes. I play a lot of rush songs on bass for decades now and i still fuck them up sometimes too. No big deal.

So often, the melody comes from the bass, it kind of clouds what Alex is doing. Interesting to hear this because his transitions from rhythm guitar to lead guitar to fitting-in-to-space guitar are pretty clear. Makes me think he hears the songs much, much differently than the rest of us do in the finished product. But I can't listen to this in one sitting. Its interesting, but this is something I keep coming back to for small doses.

@@ILSRWY4 “Real Boots”? Can you clarify what you mean? I wouldn’t consider this a boot in the traditional sense. This could have been an intentional dry feed for later live album dubs. The idea of “re-amping” was already being used in studio back then. The famous solo on Another Brick in the Wall Pt.2 from Pink Floyd The Wall was fed into a different amp by the engineer way after it was played. Gilmour wasn’t even there.

So you can really hear what he's doing on these songs. Yes, it sounds sloppy at times but, to me, that is totally normal and expected because he's listening to the amplified and effected sound and playing to that (different sustain, feel, just totally different when playing with distortion than without) and he's playing live where he's probably emphasizing the performance. For example, in those opening chords for Limelight you can totally hear him do the Pete Townsend strum which is not how he probably played it on the original recording!

It seems to me to be a bootleg of Alexs wireless pack on his guitar, This can only be reached by obtaining the frequency from the receiver unit or looking at the pack itself. Then getting a similar brand receiver in that frequency range to dial into the frequency itself and then recording the output of the hidden receiver. This would be the dry guitar signal..... So whoever did this had access to the gear and was at the gig. I can hear RF interference every now and again which is typical at a gig with many frequencies in the air within close proximity on stage etc...... OR this guy just played everything. The channel owner is a badass guitar player so its one of the two.
