A lot of these comments are over a year old but I want to update you from 2023. Ovechkin is now the second all time goal scorer in the NHL, with 809 goals, on pace to handily overtake Wayne Gretzky, a feat most thought would never happen given how the game has changed since the Great One played. Ovechkin is probably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history, he's got unbelievable skill, he's done this all at only one team his whole career, and he's a freak of nature, 6'4 and 240 pounds of muscle, 37 years old and still going strong. He's among the greatest players we've ever seen. He's got a one-timer that's basically unstoppable. Everyone he's played against knows it's coming, but you can't do anything about it. When he's fed the puck in that left face-off circle, you just have to pray he misses, because it's not up to you anymore lol. He's also got one of the hardest shots, and can just do it all. I feel immensely honored as a Capitals fan, to be able to watch him play.

He's still playing, still an all-star, and is trying to break the all-time goals record in the next 5 years. He'll be a unanimous first-ballot Hall of Famer and top-10 all-time player when he's done.

It's crazy this guy has an outside chance of breaking Gretzky's goal record. He's one of the rare offensive players in hockey that can punish anyone. I always found it amazing how he would constantly lead the league in goals while being near the tops in hits every year. The Office Blokes need to understand he isn't an enforcer. He's one of the best offensive players of his generation who happens to be an enforcer when he wants to. He currently ranks 6th all time in goals scored. Looking at the list, by next year he will be 3rd.

It looked a lot more likely that he'd catch up before COVID :( I'd argue that he's the best pure goal scorer in NHL history. Gretzky has him beat in a number of other areas and is unarguably the better player overall, but in terms of personally putting the puck in the net I think Ovi has him beat. Having Ovi play for us here in DC has been an absolute privilege. He's not just a generational talent but a once in a lifetime talent. I can't think of anyone else who has his combination of scoring ability and physicality, and we're not likely to see someone like him wearing the red again, period.
@chaost4544
@chaost4544 3 жыл бұрын
@@nickyarbrough8392 I'm almost with you with best pure goal scorer in NHL history. The era Ovechkin played in saw some of the best defensemen of all time along with the best goal tending in the history of the NHL. Ovi was playing in an age when goaltenders are 6'2 plus. That wasn't the case in the 80's. I also agree it's hard to find someone who has Ovi's goal scoring brilliance with physicality. He's a throw back to greats like Gordie Howe. I'm a St. Louis Blues fan so I don't seem him a lot in Western Conference games. Despite that, looking at his stats at the end of every year I am always left with the impression of "Holy god... this guy would love Western Conference style hockey.

You mention many of "Eastern European descent" they're usually full-blooded Eastern Europeans. Hockey is very popular in Russia, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden etc. Their top talent quite often makes its way to the NHL. Not unlike how footballers all over the world dream of playing in the Premier League, the NHL is that for hockey. Though the Russian league, the KHL, is quite high quality as well.

1) This video gives a misleading impression of what Alex Ovechkin does on the ice. He is currently 6th all-time in goals scored. Barring injury, he will almost certainly finish this upcoming season at 3rd or 4th. He has a legitimate chance of breaking the record held by Wayne Gretzky. His shot might be the best ever, combining speed and accuracy. Hitting the opponent is not why he's earned more than $100 million. 2) Ovechkin is listed as 6'-3", 236 pounds (190 cm, 107 kg). 236 pounds is nearly 17 stone. 3) We have learned posthumously that several retired players had moderate to severe CTE. Also, over the last 20-25 years many players have had their careers cut short by multiple concussions. This has led to new rules prohibiting all hits to the head. In the past they were allowed if the player doing the hitting did not do it illegally (hitting with the stick or elbows, for example). Players can now expect suspensions for hits to the head, except when the league inexplicably ignores its own guidelines. 4) You mentioned the many eastern European players. The countries that produce the most elite hockey players are Canada, the U.S., Russia, Czechia, Sweden, and Finland. There are also good players from Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Latvia, and Ukraine. In the early days of the NHL, mostly before WW2, there were quite a few UK players. I'm guessing the popularity of "ice hockey" declined for some reason after the war. 5) Ovechkin has had only 4 fights in his career, because no one wants to tangle with him, and also because his team would rather have him on the ice scoring goals than have him risk an injury fighting and spending time in the penalty box. That fight was against 19-year-old Andrei Svechnikov, who weighed at least 40 pounds less. 6) Leaving one's feet to hit an opponent is a "charging" penalty. It can be a 2-minute minor or a 5-minute major penalty, depending upon the severity. 7) The rule on when a player can be hit: only when he has the puck or within about a second after he has passed or lost it. 8) It doesn't matter how much taller the skates make them because they're all wearing skates. 9) The opponent at 9:36 flying over the boards is 6-foot, 9-inch Zdeno Chara, the tallest player in league history. Last season they were teammates.

The Svechnikov fight has some background. Andrei S. was just 20 years old, a newbie Russian in the big leagues, and Ovechkin was literally his childhood hero, the greatest Russian in professional hockey. It was compared to a David vs. Goliath matchup gone wrong. Nothing like getting beaten senseless by your childhood hero on international, worldwide TV for your family and friends at home to see! They later messaged each other and made up. Alex makes $47 million over 5 years and Andrei just signed for $62 million over 8 years. They'll be fine....

"He might be one of those enforcers," as I die inside :( I know that you guys aren't really super into hockey so it's understandable, but I still winced. Ovi is one of the greatest hockey players of all time and a universally adored cultural touchstone here in Washington, DC. He's been the best player on the Washington Capitals since 2009, and been our Captain since 2010. He lead us to a Stanley Cup in 2018 (and afterwards had an absolutely INSANE celebration wherein he and the other guys literally drunkenly dragged the Cup around DC, holding it over his head as people honked and cheered) and he's arguably the greatest pure goal scorer in the history of the league. Gretzky has him beat overall, but we're talking about a dude who compares favorably to the undisputed GOAT in terms of scoring ability. but yeah Ovi is huge will absolutely beat the piss out of people out there

Has only missed 24 games due to injury in 16 seasons. 116 game winning goals - 4th all time 12 time all star(8x-1st team and 4x-2nd team) 3 time League MVP (only 3 have more) 9 time Richard trophy winner (for most goals in a season) 3 time Lindsay Award (best player as voted by the players-only 2 w/ have more) STANLEY CUP CHAMPION- He is a warrior. Ovechkin steamrolls your star players then scores a hat trick. No one else does that in the nhl.

Hitting someone who doesn't have the puck is an Interference penalty. Hitting someone up high is a penalty. Hitting someone from behind against the boards is a penalty. Notice how in all the hit, Ovechkin glides into them, that is a rule, you have to ease up, if you skate through a guy, that's a charging penalty. Using your elbow is a penalty as well.

When checking someone, you cannot go for the head, leave your feet, use your stick or hit from behind. If your one of your skates is not touching the ice it is a penalty. Eric and Brett Lindros had their careers cut short due to hits to the head and concussions. Both players were 6'4" plus and weighed 240 + pounds.

For clarity, yes. NHL players do get a ton of CTE and Alzheimers and shit later on. But the league doesn't officially recognize the link between concussions and CTE etc. So there is not much being done equipment wise. But they are targeting dangerous checks and such to the head. But they could be doing so much more. Also, you can not leave your feet during a hit nor take more than three strides (I think it's three) before you hit someone. Jumping or leaving your feet not only amplifies the force because of your legs pushing you forward and up, but also increases risk of hitting the head in a bad way. Also, what Mike said was right. You can only hit a guy when he's on the puck. If you hit a guy without the puck you get called for interference.
