Frodo: “It’s a pity Bilbo didn’t kill him [Gollum] when he had the chance”. Gandalf: “Pity? It was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. Many that live deserve death, some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them, Frodo? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends...My heart tells me that he has some part to play yet, for good or ill...the pity of Bilbo may rule the fate of many” - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring If not for Gollum, Frodo would have kept the ring for himself. Tolkien in his letters stated that Frodo failed in his mission.
@hazelangus
@hazelangus 2 жыл бұрын
It's a little more nuanced than that. Tolkien actually said that it can be argued that it would have been impossible for Frodo not to claim the ring for himself, given that Sauron has his eye fully on Frodo at that point, and he was in a very weakened state. Tolkien didn't think it was really appropriate to call it a failure when it was something impossible to succeed at.

May have been smaller than Smaug since he lived in the Third Age, but we know nothing of his slaining besides that it was done by Fram so we don't really know. But in fairness just because there are only four named dragons doesn't mean there aren't others who are greater than he is, during the Siege of Gondolin (where Thorin and Gandalfs swords come from) there are "many dragons" present and even in the Third Age Gandalf remarks that "There are no longer and dragons in whom the old fire burns hot enough to melt the one ring." suggesting that there are dragons whose fire doesn't burn hot enough (possibly including Smaug, we don't know if his fire counts as "hot enough" to destroy the one ring).

I feel they were caught in a place where they were forced to try and fit the Hobbit into LotR's shoes. It suffers from trying to be something it never was. If someone else had made the Hobbit they could have done it in a way that suited the book, more quirky and silly and actually a lot funnier but all the people who were fans of the other film would never have excepted that, so they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. Having said that Martin Freeman nailed my Bilbo and the whole film was a lot of fun taken on its own merits.

I actually will defend the Hobbit trilogy until death. Most folks have (legitimate) complaints about it and I agree with most, but those flaws do not invalidate the things that are done so well in this trilogy. I feel the same about Jackson's King Kong remake. I also applaud Jackson's adaptation of this story which was far more childish than the LOTR trilogy and with a great deal less material. Also, for those that feel Tauriel is gratuitous and adds length to an already overlong set of films, imagine trying to make an entire trilogy without a single major female character which the Hobbit does not have. There is a LOT of fat in this trilogy, but the White Council and Tauriel are not a problem for me. Is this trilogy as good as LOTR? No, but it is being drawn from a much less rich source.
@jessaandalexwatch

I was prepared to dislike the added character of Tauriel, but I think she actually turned out great. Love the White Council stuff too. @toddjackson3136

I wish they would have added Tauriel without the love story. Just because you add a female character does not mean they need to be in love with someone. I'm also disappointed with the addition of Legolas. I understand that technically he would have been present while the dwarves were in his father's Kingdom, however they already over glorified him in The Lord of the Rings. They did not need to make him a super being in The Hobbit as well. A nice Cameo like they did with Frodo would have worked just fine

@@toddjackson3136 I absolutely agree, and Jackson's obsession with impossible physics (which rears its head in LOTR but even more so in King Kong) are also way too prevalent. Even a certain name drop in the end of the Battle of Five Armies stretches credulity in the name of fan service (being vague to avoid spoilers).

Agree completely! Spoilers... I knew the moment I saw her that people would bitch about Tauriel (I read the book so I knew she wasn't in it), but, let's face, it Tolkien's world is a sausage fest! I couldn't bring myself to hate them adding a female character who does besides stand around looking pretty, or in the case of The Hobbit, exists at all. But, you know, even in LOTR people bitched that Arwen had the little bit of action she did compared to the book in that she rather than Glorfindel rode Frodo to Rivendell, so I knew people would with a character like Tauriel. And while we're on the subject, Galadriel had a lot more action in the movie than the book. If there's any part that I felt was a little unnecessary and was kind of just a call back to that scene in LOTR where she goes dark, it was that one. And the forbidden love element between Tauriel and Kili. Again, I knew from the moment he first started flirting with her that people would bitch about it and I was "supposed" to hate it, but I didn't. I just didn't. It was interesting. The one thing that I kind of got tired of in The Hobbit movies was that, by the third film, all of the references to the LOTR movies were starting to just feel like too much. Like they could have had 10-20% less and still gotten the point across. Same for the GCI. It was fine in the places where it was necessary like with Smaug and even Azog. But that absurd popping out of the barrel that Bombur did in the second movie. That was where they lost me. However, I didn't hate Kili and Tauriel because I'm shipper trash apparently, and the characters of Radagast and Tauriel...I loved both! I don't care. They were fun.

Did you ever see The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot, a comedy in which Peter Davison, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy tried to get parts in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special? Very funny, with lots of familiar guest stars (including some connected to this reaction) :D

The best version of the Hobbit is the Tolkien cut, which you can find online, baisically cuts out everything that isn't actually in the hobbit and makes it a much less cringe inducing watch, and, just to show how good the original script is and how unecessary the "additions" after cutting a 9 hour movie trilogy down to a 3.5 hour film, you don't feel like there is anything really missing.

@@jessaandalexwatch definitely recommend it, weirdly fixes a lot of issues around the story structure, and character arcs. As someone who is a sucker for the LotR extended editions I'd never think to argue "less is more" but in this case it's weirdly true. Only down side is some of the scene transitions are a bit... odd, you can tell in places things have been cut (though you'd never guess how much at times). (Odly off all the things to cut out of the film, why did Peter Jackson cut out the Eagles talking?)

As someone who read pretty much all Tolkien wrote, these movies are a huge missed oportunity. They suffer from the typical filmmaker illness of wanting to outdo what came before. But technically THIS is what came before. You can't under any circumstances go bigger than LOTR. But that is exactly what Peter Jackson and his team did. They at least tried to be as big as LOTR and that is just the wrong approach to "The Hobbit". I don't mind the addition of the Necromancer and explaining why Gandalf leaves the party.This needed to be told. But they structure this not in a way that it stands to reason that Gandalf and the White Council take another 80 years to realize that Bilbo actually has the one ring. There is too much foreboding going on.

Glad you two are enjoying them, but the Hobbit movies really aren't for me. My main issue with the movies is that they try to make the dwarves badass but they are still constantly running away or getting captured, no matter how easily they slaughter their foes. It's all just pointless padding as every fight ends the way it does in the book, where the dwarves are boastful cowards and flee or surrender every encounter until Five Armies, usually saved by Gandalf or Bilbo.

That’s a really good point. The fact of the matter is they tried to fit the hobbit story into a mold it had no business being.

I totally agree. The endless chase scene with Rhadaghast/wargs/Thorin’s party in this movie is just terrible. It feels like “we need an action sequence here!!” studio notes to me.

In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf says that when the White Council assaulted Dol Guldur Sauron was gone already and his Nazgul had left before him to get Mordor ready for him. So, at some point, the Nazgul, including the Witch King were there.

The way I see it: these movies are the fast food edition of Tolkien. Nothing really matters, and nothing sticks for the most part. The dialogue is cheesy, the over reliance of cgi makes it look cheap, and a bloated cast makes it incredibly confusing as to who to really care about. The Lord of the Rings is the gourmet three course meal where every dish is cared for to the last detail.

No interest in these films and only seen the first two once and never seen the third, I can't put my finger on it but they feel soulless compared to the LOTR. The action is way to over the top and I completely zone out and lose interest until it's over.

The animated Rankin Bass Hobbit movie from the 70s is the closest you're gotta get to a decent and faithful adaptation of the book. This "trilogy" is a fat bloated mess..the LOTR films took 3 really long books and whittled them down to 3 longish films. This takes one TINY, tightly paced book and streeeeetches it out until the story of the book is completely lost. Also, I personally thing Martin Freeman was either completely miscast, or had a terrible take on the character. In the book the person Bilbo is at the start and who he is at the end is night and day different.. his arc is totally lost here among odd acting choices and a million shoehorned subplots.

Although strictly not following the rules, the fact that Gollum tried to answer the question, made it reasonable that the question stands. I believe it's something along those lines it's stated in Lord of the Rings.
