In todays video we are looking at how to play custom mp3s on our Amazon Echos using Home Assistant. This is going to allow us to make use of custom sound effects, movie quotes and our own voice recordings
in our Scripts and Automations. It's a simple process. I have added extra bits to the video in order to give more detail to new users, and to people
that aren't super familiar with playing around with audio files. In this video we create a simple automation, and then amend that automation with a new script call.

I was having the same problem, had some syntax formatting error with my "message" entry. I don't know what it was. I cut a pasted the example from the Amazon wiki and entered my own file URL and it finally worked!

Hi, and thanks for the video tutorial. I am having trouble listening to the messages both from jovo url and also local address accessed from external source. The Alexa hub keeps saying "Sorry, Iam having trouble accessing the Simon........". Any idea what could be causing the problem? Thanks.

learned how to play local files with this tutorial! i found a way of not adding the target echo and call it directly in the service: notify.(write the echo name you want to use) so no need to add the target: in the code. thank you!

Mate your help is awesome I’ve been able to do so many things I have wanted to do on my home assistant that I would have never be able to accomplish without your extremely informative and easy to follow videos. I have watched some from other KZfaq creators but they either don’t explain things properly or run through things so quickly it’s really difficult to pause and understand what they are explaining so once again thank you so much for your ongoing outstanding, insightful and informative videos

Thanks for the vid. I was able to get my duckdns config to play the converted files through my device so all is good. In my case, I'm using a HACS integration that reads my USPS mail and uses TTS and audio clips to play notifications midday for when mail is present, absent, when it's Sunday and when it's a holiday. Works like a champ!

@@MarkWattTech I had previously used my Google Home to emit audio clips; however, I have a number of echo devices and I might eventually use room presence to play clips so being able to play clips around the house is a step in the right direction. Also, couldn't you use Audacity to do the audio conversion rather than having to post the clip to the web?

You can yes. Check out the media_player.volume service :) You could call this service to set your volume on a button press of the remote etc :)

Been using custom TTS with Node Red for a while, annoying because it seems to keep losing authentication every week or so, so with this video and the other one I added the Alexa services directly as a service in HA. Now I am trying to call this from the Developer Tools, or from Node Red using a service node and all I get is "sorry I am having trouble ... with the simon says skill" when I try to play an audio file, but TTS is working. So has this now broken? I see a few other comments saying its broken as well. Edit: Got it working using my website to host the files.

@@jimdickinson1539 Yes, I guess behind the scenes they block several domains or something to prevent DIY stuff like this or for security. So using my site worked.

You can access this via Node Red yes :) I just rebooted my Alexa tutorials and this will be something I show in a future video. There are some Node Red examples in the Alexa documentation.

I was able to convert the mp3 and upload with file editor. I’m not sure what to type for my local url to test that it players from home assistant. What do I need to type into the browser and where do I find that?

Testing it locally will be your ip/location of the file. The file needs to be public for Alexa to play it though

Don't know if you found the answer for this but the way I am doing that is to use an automation. When my alarm is triggered I use a Repeat action and the conditions are while the alarm is triggered. Just started playing around with this but working well so far.

Hey Luis. You can do this yes :) I use it a lot for that kind of thing. I use a script to collect the data, then I expose this script to Alexa via Nabu Casa. Alexa sees the script as a scene so you can then say turn on / activate that script. For a more natural sound and feel add the script to an Alexa routine where you can say what temp is X or is window Y open. But then you cannot ask directly to Alexa something like "tell me the temperature in the living room" instead you have to tell her "Alexa execute routine temp living room" right? im trying to set up an alarm system in my house with home assistant. Im trying to create a loud alarm tone through alexa echo dot because i dont have any other speakers for it to sound the tone through. Ive been trying everything in this video but cant seem to get the downloaded url to work. Not sure if its because I manually downloaded it instead of using samba share? Im super new to all this so not sure where its going wrong. Awesome videos by the way. They have been helping me a lot!

Since I have a hosting for my sites, can I upload my mp3 online and just give that url ? The mp3 of course plays just fine though a browser but would it work with Alexa ?

I couldn't get this to work when I targeted an everywhere speaker group, all notifications even stopped working on devices in the group until they were power cycled. The workaround I found was that I could achieve the same effect by listing each Echo Dot as a separate target in the skill. 6 hours later, I have a working door bell that proudly makes the Tardis dematerialization sound. Ty.

You can add multiple targets using hyphens under that config option. Doesn't work with groups but you can just add all players in a list.

Does anyone know how to get this working with Nginx reverse proxy? Works fine with just home assistant installed and standard duckdns but the moment I add Nginx, Alexa can no longer get the mp3

How about asking something to alexa and alexa will respond and get information from Home Assistant?

You can write a script, expose it to Alexa and then you can ask Alexa to run that script. I do this to ask Alexa the location of people in my household. And also to find out the temperature of my Pi. E.G. “Alexa Pi Temp” Response - “the pi is currently X degrees”

I haven’t tried using My Media. If it works it would be a great way to use local files providing you have resources to run the My Media Server. I might have a look around. If it works well I may do a video on it :)

anyone find a way to get the local file to play. Even via the https duckdns address? If i use the jovo link it works, copy that jovo file back to the HASS www folder and then use the new link and I get simple simon says. Error. Really annoying, would like to crack it as want to sue an alarm siren that's longer than the standard 5 second ones, I have a 30second file that will work if I can get it to play. Better still to play from nodered

stuck at same step, echo dot plays the jovo link but not my duckdns link. I can access the mp3 remotely on browser.. EDIT: i just changed port number from 8123 to 443 and it played.. I'm happy!!!

I haven't checked it, but you could always use another converter :) It just needs to match the spec.

Has anybody using DuckDNS gotten this to work? I've tried, and even though the "test" procedure at 7:43 passes, it will not play on the echo... I'm assuming that Duckdns + LetsEncrypt is not accepted by Amazon.

I tried with duckdns, it didn't work. I tried hosting the mp3 file on my WordPress website and it does not seem to work either. Playing from the jovo site works.

You can only use files that are publicly accessible due to the way Alexa calls them. So locally hosted MP3s wont work.

No need for external HA access unless you have where to store the sound files with direct access and HTTPS support.

It seems as if the Simon says still is only available in the US. I havent found a workaround yet.

@@charlesromney you can use the siren sound in the amazon sound library :) I just shared some code on how to do something similar on my facebook page if your interested.
