The death of pro-Kremlin TV commentator Daria Dugina in a suspected car bomb near Moscow prompted speculation that the intended target of the attack may have been her father. Alexander Dugin is a prominent ultranationalist philosopher and writer who advocates a vast new Russian empire and is a vehement supporter of the country's war in Ukraine. Some believe that the 60-year-old has been a major influence on Vladimir Putin, although he has no official ties to the Kremlin. In this week's Crux Decode, Zakka Jacob discusses how Dugin's vision has influenced the politics of Vladimir Putin.

This falls into the old pattern of Imperial Russia. The Anglo-Afghan war of 1839 had its basis in Russian imperialism vs English imperialism. Since the 18th century Russia a European kernel has occupied Central Asia, Turk, Mongol states and reaching all the way into Alaska. It is unable to get out of strongman style govt. trying to govern over a 100 million people. It is like Dugin, mentally stuck in the past.

Dugin was definitely not a RU mainstream influencer. There're 3 main groups of directions currently: 1. Westerners / Europeanists (Trenin, Navalny and exiles) 2. Stabilizators / Pragmatists ('Petertsi' = from St. Petersburg - Putin, Medvedev, business) 3. Euroasianists / Expansionists (Dugin, Zyuganov, military) Actually, Dugin was fired from his job at a state university in 2014 because he was too radical...

@Wilhelm Eley That is correct. But it is also mixed with a rather bizarre spirituality that includes Orthodoxy, paganism, and the traditionalist metaphysics of the school of Rene Guenon, but fraught with contradictions and essentially turned on its head. (See Charles Upton's, "Dugin against Dugin") and harking back to a spiritual geography that makes Russia the "center of the world" as the descendants of the Hyperborean race (while the 'atlanticists' come from Atlantis). It is not conservatism, but a spiritual postmodernism and a doctrine of Russian supremacy.

Around April, a commenter on a KZfaq channel drew my attention to Dugin, I had never heard the name before. I looked up Dugin's background and read the Wikipedia shortened account of "Foundations of Geopolitics" 1997. Within it says Ukraine should not exist as a country, Finland should be reabsorbed within Russia. I see extracts of RT, and hear people more or less spouting Dugin perspectives about recreating a Eurasia and Russia's former empire, I hear Russian children sing a song of fighting for Russia in the future, to restore Russia from the Kuril Islands to the Baltic, even reclaim Alaska. Aleksandr Dugin, and others, are deep in the Russian Psyche.

"...Aleksandr Dugin, and others, are deep in the Russian Psyche...." I think the unifying factor is nationalism wich turned into imperialism, but there is also some russian specific Nihilism wich accepts death and destruction as a consequence of true power :( However, Dugin and the other ideologists are Pumpkinheads, they ignore history they don't like and glue together things that don't match, creating a new Frankenstein Ideology with russian orthodox christianity, Mythology, USSR history when they are not communist and Tsarits Tradition while they are not Monarchists.

@@JamesC785 Yes. It could be that Russia's friendship with China is just based on a mutual dislike of the west and democracies. It could be when the time comes, maybe decades from now, China will take Russia's Far East. Russia's Far East provide Russia, mainly St Petersburg and Moscow Russia, with fossil fuel wealth whilst not getting the full benefit of their own resources. I would not be surprised if Siberia etc does not become absorbed by China. Yes I hear Russians distancing themselves from Dugin, but I hear Russia Today broadcasts almost echo Dugin to this day. What he had to say about Ukraine seems to be the playbook of the here and now, "Ukraine has no right to exist", should be reabsorbed into Russia. Russia has not got over the Soviet Union collapse, and Putin wishes to be the great tsar-like leader to bring the empire back. Yet Putin could not tell the Russian people what this is all about-the pretexts of fighting Neo-nazis, the blame of NATO and USA for threatening Russian "security" - no mass mobilisation for war presumably because the Russian people would not be behind that. The situation does parallel Europe in 1939. IMO.

Putin is much too smart to try that" So things worked out different, it is obvious that Russia is worse off then before the Invasion, but he (and others) could not have preticted how Europe reacts (Sweds and Finns want into NATO, EU consolidation, Gas Crissis...) The more I hear about Alexander Dugin, the more I like him. In the last video I saw, not this one, the ideas of Dugin boiled down to a conflict between specific humanism, with respect for the individual, and generalism, with its dominant authoritarianism: Dugin's "Great Awakening" v the WEF' s " Great Reset." Hearing the sides so clearly stated was, to me, a tremendous breath of fresh air. No prizes for guessing which side I am on. Just my deepest sadness and commisserations to the Ukrainian people as they are sacrificed by heartless, inhuman globalusts in their vile and deluded quest to imposed their inhuman authiritarianism upon us all. Dugins world view is very applicable with the migrant crisis in usa and Europe where races of different nationalities want to be w each other or similar . Many of the refuges won’t or can’t cling onto anglo neighborhoods since they are not considered part of “the American / European culture “

It's ALWAYS been this way, though. I am 65 years old, and grew up outside NYC. Ever hear of "China Town, NY" or "Little Italy," or Brooklyn where Jews banded together, etc.? You can try and mix us up, and we can mingle with others, but just like in nature, "birds of a feather really DO flock together." This country has ALWAYS had "neighborhoods" of certain groups of people.

A fine, important and useful report. Thank you. But didn't you leave something ESSENTIAL out. Dugin writes about a Eurasian world power. That includes China. . He predicts China will decline and the leadership of "Eurasia" will come from Moscow Moscow's influence and control will be, Dugan has written "from Dublin to Vladivostok." Wow! Talk about delusions of grandeur. To think like that you have to be, at least partially, crazy.

You overstate Dugin's importance in the development of Russia being 'Eurasian'. Of course it is and a glance at economic interests and transport development of of already huge network clearly confirm that Russia has few interests in an increasingly dysfunctional EU bloc and general trade with the west. The expansion of heavy raw materials, oil and gas [in portable form] to China, the sub-continent, a developing Arctic energy plan (including Japan) and being key to China's belt and road initiative as Russia and the Caspian and steppes states develop from their end. Kiev allowed the formerly productive area of Donbas turn into a depopulated rust belt full of warlords therefore, with plenty of warning to use it or lose it, the industrial and agricultural revival of the oblasts [possibly with special agreed status with the UN] will be rebuilt and modernized. Note that leaders in Kharkiv have not put aside plans to expand rail links to Russia's transport system. There is no special ideology to economic activity and accessing the biggest markets ever see, which are in Asia, then Africa, then South America. The USA and western Europe share the same unfortunate demographic profile and are not attractive markets. See the economic/demographic analyses in the public domain with especial attention to debts. Russia's interest was obviously also fear of NATO with a heavy US flavor getting a hold in Ukraine. Now that slowest of all ex-SSRs to develop due to appalling governance and corruption and US interference in the Obama era is a failed state and would not meet the criteria for NATO or the EU it would be a good time to stop fighting and make agreements with neighbors and Russia with aid from the OSCE and UN. Russia is a member of the OSCE.

None of that is conservative. It's all just socialism. Conservativism is about conservative policy with proven track records of success. It means less State power, and more individual freedom and self sufficiency. Traditional family values are part of that paradigm as it tends to result in more successful outcomes. This is even recognised in the UNRD. But religion lock stepped with the State and traditional family values are no less part of socialist paradigms. And Dugan's pie in the sky philosophies are no less nationalist socialist as they are communist and a world away from conservativism.

Ukraine had little to gain by blowing up Dugin/Dugina. The effort would have involved several operatives, expenses, and complex logistics, and for what? To kill Dugin who was seen as a raving ideologue and who had zero influence within the Kremlin? No, Ukraine would have used its resources to target additional Russian generals/colonels, or ammunition storage areas because that would tangibly assist the war effort. The strike/bombing was carried out by Russian dissidents and that is a far more exciting alternative, namely, that there is a growing number of Russians who want to bring the war to Moscow.

Too much oversimplification has been happening with these summaries of the situation in Russia. Perhaps Dugin has an imperialistic outlook and the same with Putin, but there's too much treatment of these figures in isolation of the attitudes of the broader culture and government institutions that they are a part of. In any event, the idea that it may be legitimate to target civilian academics on account of their political views represents a dangerous development in the domain of modern warfare. I am inclined to believe that Dugin's influence has been exaggerated in order to fabricate a so called "victory" that might bolster the morale of the Ukrainian camp.
