Guys, he’s in love with a fairytale meaning he’s in love with the idea of his relationship with her. They had a terrible relationship, clearly from the song, but he’s romanticizing it because he misses her. The “fairytale” aspect is a version of their relationship that only consists of the happy parts, a sugar-coded, rose-tinted version of them, and he’s in love with the idea of it.

This is one of those catchy songs that is so rhythmic and catchy, but depressing at the same time too. Love problems are truly one of the worst. Heartbreak and lovesickness lead to sadness. I dont think it's about a current relationship (the song starts with "years ago" and all the lines about the relationship are in past tense, not present) The relationship didnt work out, (every day we started fighting, no one else could make me sadder) but now hes still in love with the girl. How he remembers her is now based on all the good parts of the relationship, rather then the whole picture of what she was actually like (hence "I'm in love with a fairytale". Hes not in love with her, hes in love with the perfect version of her hes created in his head)
