It's actually safe for gringos (foreigner) to be in the favelas, if you have permission to be there, with most gringos do, because they usually buy tourism packages that already have a guy from inside the favela that is responsible to show them all the parts of the place. If you have a touristic guide your definitely safe.

As a brazilian, don´t go to the Favelas there is litteraly nothing that is worth the risk, all the favelar are dominated by drug dealers, and almost every day they get into shootings against the cops or other gangs. so if you ever go to Rio, just stay in the rich part, and obviously watch out for your phone and gold chains.

I also don't get why foreign people would even consider going to a favela ever in their lives. There's literally nothing to see in there but exactly what you would expect. A lot of poverty, a lot of fucked up houses with no sewerage and a lot of people who don't speak your language. Even if you manage to minimize the risk by going to the right place at the right time there's still nothing to gain from it. Not worth the risk, stay away from those hellholes.

I've seen many examples of people having negative reviews of Nina and her interviews, or the fact she gets to do what she does - but honestly, it's such a wonderful look into who fighters really are, ask fun questions and integrate jokes to the interviews. Shes definitely making MMA better overall, and more inclusive and interesting. Nice job and keep it up!

What's interesting about favelas, places controlled by drug trafficking with people held hostage by drug traffickers, being Brazilian I think it's ridiculous, the romanticization they make of favelas, I don't live in Rio, I live in Curitiba, everyone from Curitiba finds this romanticization of favelas ridiculous, lawless place dominated by crime

Favela is an incredible place to visit here, everyone is friendly and if you meet a drug dealer just act like a Jurassic Park movie: Don't move, don't breathe, don't do eye contact. If they confront you don't worry you will be remembered.

As a Brazilian, Rio is like one of the worst of Brazil these days. The nature is still there, but no much more. It´s not the violence only, but the culture there is bronken too. But if you know the rigth guys, like Pantoja and Aldo, you can go to some Favelas (because there is a lot of them), not anywhere but somewhere.
