That’s what my Mom keeps on telling me and my sister. She owes this wisdom to my grandma. Share ko lang ang story ng grandma and mama ko. My granny got married at the tender of 17 in 1953 to my gramps (may his soul rest in peace) through an arranged marriage. Unfortunately, resident womanizer ang Grandfather ko and most of his money ay nagagastos to his flings. Now my grandma was not accustomed to hard life at all. She lived a privileged childhood pero her marital situation at the time has turned her to my favourite and empowered role model of all time. She stepped up. She worked. She earned her own money that she used to support my two uncles and my mom. She did pretty great considering that she never finished school and quite frankly she had small interest in academia. Pero all her children are well raised, all earned a university degree and all are leading a successful career in their respective fields. She’s still working now at the age of 83. She’s not financially dependent on her children, kasi she made it a point na kapag may asawa na ang anak sila na ang priority. She learned not to depend on my granddad or to any of her children, kaya siguro it was easy for her to leave my gramps and say “To hell with you” hahaha. What’s the point of staying in an unfulfilling marriage when you can manage on your own just fine right? On the other hand, my mama started earning her own money at 16 years old (so that’s around 1980s). She started small, pinahiram ng capital ng Lola ko. Nag-start ng bbq business, to selling trinkets and a lot of innumerable things that I couldn’t possibly name now because the list is really long. Long story short, she started earning her own money at a young age and mind you she did it while earning her business degree. But she still has that streak of conservatism in her na she quit her managerial job in the late 1990s to be a full-time mom to me and my siblings. We are in no way easy to take care of especially when my Dad moved abroad to work in the early 2000s. I’m so proud of her kasi even though her hands were full with three kids, she made it a point to earn her own money even though it’s not really needed anymore. She could’ve said “Oh well naka-abroad ang asawa ko. I don’t really need to work for my own money.” But she didn’t. She chose not to be dependent on her spouse like my grandma and continued to earn money through her jewellery business. Pero something was still missing. It wasn’t enough that she’s earning money, she still doesn’t feel fulfilled. So she decided to go back to university in her 40s to earn a second degree. She did this while raising three angsty teenagers (unfortunately including myself hahaha) and tending to her business. I know my comment is long but I just want to say that it had a massive impact on me and my sister. What my grandma and mama taught us is the essence of knowing that the person who can empower you is the most in none other than yourself. I maybe speaking in terms of financial aspects but I really think that women are most empowered when they earn their own money. Totoo yung sinasabi ni Karen Davilla na “may say ka” when you have your own money because you are not dependent on anyone or ANY MAN rather. My mama used to say you have to earn your own money lalo na kapag you unfortunately don’t end up in good terms with your in-laws dahil magiging “Tae ka sa paningin nila” (My Mom’s pangaral). She came to this conclusion because she is a witness on how bad my dad’s side of the family treated those women who aren’t financially stable when they married into the family, lalo na yung mga babaeng asawa ng pinsan ng dad ko kawawa talaga according to my Mom’s stories. The only reason why they treat my Mom with such high respect as opposed to those unfortunate women is because she had her own money by the time she married my Dad. In fact, our grandparents didn’t get to chip in for the financial cost of my parent’s wedding because my mother was so against the idea. She just won’t have it. But yeah ang haba na hahaha but I just want to say that talagang may point si Karen when she said na “An empowered woman is a woman who earns her own money”. It will take you far if you have this mindset. Both my mama and grandma taught me and my sister to not be extremely dependent on anyone because when life decides to throw you the shittiest shit of all then YOU should pick yourself up and get yourself out of that mess. And it’s the best thing these two wonderful women could ever pass down to me and my sister. We learned to work while in university, we learned to pay our own bills, we learned to always pay half of the bill when we go out on dates and to not expect the guys we’ve dated to pay for us.

Sana mag colab din kayo ni Small Laude. Coz ur both funny and real people. Walang mga kyeme. Like fun lang and being urself natural na nakakapag pasaya. I've watched almost all of your previous vlogs and it really made my day.
