BEST SSDs - THIS is why you should ignore benchmark tests!
I tested the most popular SSDs from Amazon using the Apple M1 Max MacBook Pro, M1 iPad Pro, M2 iPad Pro, M1 iPad Air and Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra. I did use benchmark tools but I also did some realistic data transfers between these devices and the SSDs. The results vary wildly, but I share all the data here in this video. You can even use some of these faster ones on your Tesla 👀
⚡️Samsung T5: geni.us/wPac8
⚡️Samsung T7: geni.us/QK0WvIx
⚡️Sandisk Extreme: geni.us/ZuIuK
💨 Crucial X8: geni.us/4BsYy
⚡️ Acasis hub: bit.ly/3MeKdIV
⚡️ Acasis enclosure: bit.ly/3u4XgWx
⚠️ iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max users ⚠️
I'd be careful with using the T7 shield for ProRes. Yes it will work but if you try 4K60 in LOG and it will drop frames, the footage is unusable.
✅️I'm doing a new video about SSDs covering this but I'd recommend the X9 or X10 for fastest ProRes on the iPhone 15 Pro range:

Important to note you can't just use any USB-C cable with these SSDs. I tried my Crucial X8 with an Anker charging/data cable and I got limited transfer speeds of like 40MB/s sequential. Once I switched to the cable in the box, it gave me 950MB/s

USB C has variants gem 1, gen 2 and gen ,3. Gen 1 is identical to standard USB C -- the slowest Each generation increases speed by adding wires to the cable. An off-the shelf type C cable will be for gen 1. Choose wisely.

Great job, as always ... Thanks Alex! And, by the way, I have the Samsung T7, which works great across my devices (Windows laptop, Samsung Tab S8 Ultra and 12.9" M1 iPad Pro). I also have a separate Anker multi-port hub. I would have easily went with the ACASIS M.2 NVMe hub if that would have been available when I made those separate purchases.

BEWARE that there are many issues with Sandisk Extreme SSDs now. They released an updated version (pretty sure it looks just the same, just different internals) and it has been repeatedly reported as buggy. I've seen quite a few people reporting data loss too, which was not an occurrence before. I can paste the models I know of, but they are not the only ones: • SanDisk Extreme Portable 4TB (SDSSDE61-4T00) • SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable 4TB (SDSSDE81-4T00) • SanDisk Extreme Pro 2TB (SDSSDE81-2T00) • SanDisk Extreme Pro 1TB (SDSSDE81-1T00) • WD My Passport 4TB (WDBAGF0040BGY)

7:12 Months ago I was completely sold on the idea of using one of those NVMe SSD’s but the problem is that that set up is expensive and they don’t give you much more speed. I wanted to take advantage of the WD SN850 SSD card which has an advertised speed of up to 7,300MB/s. The problem is that the enclosure costs at least $200 and the 2TB card is another $200 and there’s basically nothing on the market that can handle this speed when it comes to enclosures. So you are bottle-necked by it at around 2,800MB/s. Real scenarios even lower than that. At this point, I prefer to just get a WD Black Gaming SSD that gets you 2,000MB/s or an OWC that could give you up to 2,800MB/s and save myself the hassle of Frankeinsteining one with an enclosure that would never reach even half the advertised speed.

I have a Sandisk Extreme 2Tb and a Samsung T3 and T5. I LOVE both Samsungs's. Both are very fast and super reliable. The Sandisk however, constantly freezes for up to 15 seconds intermittently when transferring data, so the speed is rather disappointing. Also, my cousin works with different drives in his software business. He told me they have constant problems with the Sandisk.

sandisk extreme pro is a [BUZZER SOUND] it was either a bad batch recently (early 2023?) but I'd seen LOADS of issues but the one that happened to mine out of the box was that when you were using it (actively plugged in) but not working in the file folders of the drive or using the drives files in an active program, and then suddenly you try to use it, the drive will 'hang' for 2-8 seconds or so before popping out of this dreamlike state and suddenly back to full speed. As a creative professional, I straight-up cannot rely on this. I'm torn between the lacie SSD 2TB or the samsung T7.

Thanks for the video! @5:58 - This part was really important for me. Temps after stress test is a real thing now, mainly because of Tesla. I'm looking for a good capacity, good speed, good temp SSD for the TeslaCam. I seen some videos on the Samsung T7 having issues with overheating, so I'm gonna get the Crucial X8. Advice: definitely keep temps as a point of focus in future videos because as Tesla gets more popular other companies are gonna follow, and thus more cars are going to have built in cams that are going to need these kinds of SSD with low temp and high speeds.

Hello, thanks for this great video =) I Would like to know if you did these test on Ventura for the MacBook Pro testes, I am just about to buy a drive and was gonna go for Samsung T7 Shield 2TB but then reports start coming that its not working well since Ventura on MacBooks 200-250mb/sec.. I have a MacBook Pro 16 M1, what do you think? Also, if I would like 4TB but still on a medium budget, would you suggest a m.2 enclosure usb-c over the Sandisk 4TB drive (if money not enough for thunderbolt) ?

Thank you for this review, I've read lots of feedback from buyers of the Crucial X8 and they state that it starts FAST, but quickly drops off when moving larger files. For now, I'll stick with the T7 Shield as I've been able to give presentations from it with video/photo content. I visited your presentation just to see if something faster or more dependable is out. Thanks and I wish you all the best. Being able to work directly from the T7 Shield is a big advantage when we're having to use systems already installed at lecture halls.

@@AlexGTech Tempted to get two of these Crucials and put them into a raid for the speed on a Mac Mini to act as my external HD. Then back up everything to a 4GB external HD every night. That would elimate the mess of SATA SSD's littering my desk. Shocked how horrible and expensive most options are after all this time.
