Apartment hunting in Amsterdam - definitely our most challenging and most emotional flat search so far. We finally found our new home, but it was definitely a long journey to get there. With only limited rental apartments available, and high prices, Amsterdam isn't an easy place to find a home, but it does have some real gems.
We checked out a few places that matched what we were looking for, in this video we show you the viewings we went to, discuss the features and prices and share some tips on how you can land a place here. If you're moving to Amsterdam, don't give up, it just takes a bit of luck, patience, and the right timing - and it will be so worth it!

We're so happy that we finally found our new home! It was definitely very stressful and took 2.5 months. We will move in late July/August, up next will be how we'll decorate it, the part we've been looking forward to for so long. It's a tough housing market for sure (as most popular cities these days), but you can find some real gems - let us know what you thought of the places we looked at! If you're looking for an apartment in Amsterdam as well, good luck, don't give up, and see you around in this beautiful city! 😊

@@gracedaniels6172 I can share some that helped me. plan towards it, Be Frugal and minimal on spending (don't buy why you don't need), Sav e m oney towards retirement (Roth IRA /401), Build an emergency fu.nd, S ave to in vest, it's a proven way to get richer. Very important to fi nancial success

This video helped me so much. I just moved to Ireland and am trying to find an apartment for me and my dog. I feel so anxious, like this will never happen. I'm moving to Amsterdam for work and just signed on a house. I think some of the houses you visited I saw as well. We had some struggle as we're bringing two cats and a dog, but we've been able to find an apartment finally.

Amsterdam has thr nickname "soft Europe" among the expat community. English is spoken widely in Amsterdam which makes it really hard to learn thr language since everyone would just converse in English. Even the government city services are available in English. There are many English language jibs available since Amsterdam is also a hub for foreign companies.

Hi from Amsterdam (the pijp)! I’ve always lived in east and if I can just make 1 recommendation it’s Vita’s friet on the Dappermarkt. Her fries and home made spicy Mayo and saté saus are just THE BEST!! Congrats on the new place and happy exploring.

I'm living in the Netherlands and looking to move to Melbourne, so just watching something I'm familiar with before checking Melbourne apartments videos to base my expectations from youtube. 100% agree that apartments in NL are insanely small and expensive, the no privacy part, the steep stairs, and the random sinks

Yayyy so happy you found a place! I literally relate with all the pain of looking to find a flat in Amsterdam. Question: does your place have a washing machine? Most of the flats I visited (I think it was around 10-12 though some cancelled on me on the day) had a dishwasher but no washing machine. Moving from London.. a dishwasher was so rare to find in a rental but a washing machine was really common whilst here it's the opposite it really confuses me 😭). Also thank you for including prices! I ended up going above what my wanted budget was as well but as soon as I saw it (especially after all the 🦆 flats I saw..) I was like yes mine please gimme but I was getting cold feet with the price so it's nice to compare. Congratulations again and happy birthday 🎉

Yes, it has a dishwasher and a washer+dryer.. thankfully! A few of the places we saw only had the connection for it, I think it depends, but you can always get one for fairly cheap and apparently they carry it up and install it for you as well, so if you find a good place, don't let that deter you ;) Best of luck!

Very informative vid, loved it! Was wondering tho, did every place you viewed allow pets? Because I've been looking all over Funda and Pararius, and most places either state no pets allowed (unless it's like 4000 euros plus or smthn) or it just doesn't say at all. Or did you contact the landlords and tell them you had a dog and maybe work something out? Any tips at all would be amazing because I'm looking to get a dog soon too :)

I moved to shitty apartment in Amsterdam during summer 2020. It took me 6 months checking Funda every day to find the perfect rental place. It just takes a lot of effort and devotion here.

Hey! I have been living in Amsterdam for 3 years now and wanted to ask, when you found this place on facebook or ones you went on viewings for, did you find completely empty places where you would be the only tenants. If so, how did you do that. I am looking for a place of my own but it seems that on Facebook everything is just about being housemates with someone else and no opportunity to have a place for myself. I really hope you see this comment as an answer would really save my life. I have struggled with finding a place for years and the struggle is back again and I really want to get things right. Happyyyy for you! At least you had an interesting voyage, seeing so many places inside is also exploring the city in a unique way! Apart from it being beautiful and convenient, I wish you good neighbors. This is more important than we usually think. I need to move out of the dream(ish) apartment right now, because of the abusive down neighbor. The view is spectacular - the river entering the ocean, old town roofs, etc. But the dude is abusive towards his girlfriend and exported the violence upstairs. We've heard the death threads towards my boyfriend and the newly adopted doggie after 10-sec zoomies in the night, straight after we apologized, so it's too much of unrequited drama. And even though they got kicked out, we don't feel safe staying there. So much conflict we didn't subscribe for, I wish everyone good neighbors :)

As someone living in DC who formerly lived in London and Paris, this makes me so sad. DC is so expensive and it’s so hard to find something less than $4k with a lot of character that isn’t modern or 400sqft. I get it’s the most expensive city in the USA and there are so many amazing apartments here, but it is so expensive. When I lived in Europe, I had the most amazing apartments for less than $2500.

Thank you! No, never owned a car and likely won't anytime soon ( Alexis doesn't even have her license). Here you can reach everything easily by bike, and if not, then by transit, luckily :)
