The reason why Katniss going in was such an important event is because she was saving her sister and she was the first ever volunteer from 12. The same reaction wasn't there for Peeta since it was literally just a normal reaping, no volunteers. Just a random pick

Katniss isn't supposed to have a bow, because hunting is actually extremely illegal. The Capital is supposed to have complete control over available resources, even if it means not providing enough food for everyone. In truth, they want the lowest in society to be starving and suffering. Also, the Capital wouldn't want the workers to have hunting weapons which could be used to fight and overthrow their rule. However, Katniss is able to hunt and trade in the black market, even dealing directly with the police who are supposed to stop her, because everyone in 12 is starving and wants the meat. In book 2, this changes, the "peacekeepers" are replaced, and we see what happens when they enforce the laws against hunting.

Haymitch’s problem was that before Katness and Peta, he was the only tribute to win from district 12. All the kids he had to mentor since he won (as a teen boy himself) he watched die in the arena. He ends up with a heavy drinking problem as a result. As per usual, the books went into more detail about poor Haymitch... 😆

If I remember right he had feelings for katniss’s mom’s sister and he wanted to help her win the game but she died and by the end of the games he was practically holdin his intnestines to keep them from fallin out . After that game his alcoholism started to try to forget and to not feel anything watchin kids year by year be sent to their death

The torture on Katniss in the book is extremely diluted in the movie. Also, I think it's one of best YA romance novels despite all the bloodshed and gore. Because, love and relationships hell of complicated. Never smooth sailing also young people stupidly emotional. For a young person it is as close to great romantic read as it gets.

The book goes much more in depth with the whole Peeta Katniss situation. The whole tragic love story thing was made up by Haymitch and Peeta to get sponsors. Throughout the whole game Katniss thinks that they’re putting on a show, and she is kind playing a role while Peeta isn’t. We later go on to find out that Peeta is in fact in love with her, and we hear a lot more about why and how they know each other. I just wish that they had focused more on Peeta’s character in the movies, because he is actually really interesting, and there’s a lot of reasons for the things he does, that I don’t think they’re good at illustrating in the movie.

Now I just wanna state that I read all three books before seeing any of the movies, and I thought Peetas character was so annoying in the books, Suzanne Collins wrote the annoying character properly looking back in retrospect. He’s that kid who’s better off and doesn’t understand katniss’s struggle as well as the audience sympathizes with, but he’s got his own complexity. Long story short 12 year old me was edgy and thought gale was better but peetas a good character
@sifsaabye2602
@sifsaabye2602 3 жыл бұрын
@@imoenbradley3351 I don’t have anything against Gale’s character I just felt like he came off too strong. Like she never seemed really interested in him. I feel like her and Peeta fit together better because they had that special connection, because of everything they went through together. I also don’t really get the feeling that she was really in “love” with any of them. But it’s been so long since I read it so it might not be true. I just don’t feel like the brought Peeta’s character to justice in the movies. His only character trait was being in love with Katniss. Of course that’s also a huge part of the book, but we don’t really get to see the fact that his dad didn’t love his mom, that he would get beaten up and that his parents really didn’t show any interest in him.

@@AllenGray47 Other Tributes did not have access to weapons and had probably never used them before. With the exception of Tributes from Districts 1 & 2, they had no training and experience using weapons, so they probably did not feel confident in their abilities to actually injure or kill one of those Capitol guys. Plus the Tributes probably knew that it would mean they would have an instant death sentence if they actually killed a person from the Capitol and would rather take their chances trying to survive in the arena than die immediately in the Capitol. Even the Tributes from 1 & 2 who were trained would rather take their chances in the arena because they had more of a chance of surviving because they knew how to fight. Districts 1 & 2 seemed to be more brainwashed to follow what the Capitol dictates also. The mentality the Districts seem to have of "we can't fight back" is probably because they have been oppressed for so long and have had so much taken away from them whenever they resisted before. That is a critical reason why what Katniss does inspires so many others to finally start fighting back against the Capitol.
@AllenGray47

@@jamboree615 dude it's straight up copium. I mean granted the capitol does a loooooooooot of other incredibly stupid and short sighted things, like not fireballing either one of or both Katniss and Peta at the end, but you can *not* deny that no matter what, that is a very very stupid risk to take. The odds of survival are low, anyone sufficiently pissed would feel like they have nothing to lose. It's very very stupid. That does not mean that you are stupid for liking it. You can like something AND recognize it has flaws. But do not sit there and try to convince me the game makers sitting in a carnival shooting gallery with no protection is some big brain play. The film's editing and camerawork is very documentary like and I think this was the point because of the fact that the film is very raw and real in the district scenes and in the games there's lots of uncomfortable closeups. It's almost wartime like as well with it's shaky camera which is part of the point considering that it is set 74 years after a Rebellion in a post apocalyptic soviet.

The reason everyone kinda flipped when Prim-Rose was picked(I know this from the books) is because she's 12 and many people would feel bad for the younger kids who had gotten picked. In the books they explained how more papers with your name are added each year so the likely hood of a 12 year old getting picked is a lot less then an 18 year old. Thats also why for Peeta it was less of a reaction because he's older and had a much higher likely hood of being picked. These movies talk a bit about the loss of innocence and it shows how people are more uncomfertable with an 12 year old getting picked then a 18 year old

I think peetas background also play into a lot of how no one (not even his family) even cared too much about peeta. His mom literally beats him all the time and told peeta that only katnis will win the hunger games. Plus he was part of the upper class inside district 12 and thus was perceived to be more privileged and is less sympathised compared to katniss. Peeta's family who runs the bakery isnt very generous either as seen from how the family would rather throw away burnt bread than give it to the poor who are starving. As opposed to katniss who hunts and sells it at the market, her whole family is known to help out with injured people and much more well known to be a kind family in town. The whole book has shaped katniss and peeta a strong contrast between each other which is very different from other YA sincr the female lead is the attractive/more desired one rather than the male lead. I do get why a lot of people dont see Peeta as a worthy male lead because Peeta's character require a lot of later details to slowly piece back his background and even then people might not sympathize with him because of his privilege.

I know that in the film Katniss' love for Peeta seems artificial especially in the interview after winning the Hunger Games but in context of the book it makes sense because Katniss really didn't love Peeta it was really all about survival. People focus too much on the relationship aspect of the book and films and not about the corruption and hunger that was really the main focal point of the hungers games. This review is a good example of that.
@wiiink

yeah I read the books within the last couple years (also hadn't seen the movies) and I wasn't sure if they would be good since I'm picky about what I read and figured it would be a cheap romance thing because that's kinda how it's marketed but I was shocked by how good they were. I loved how the whole focus of the story isn't on the games but how the characters present themselves to the audience. I was also surprised how cold and competent Katniss was as a protagonist and I loved it.
@escaramujo
@escaramujo 3 жыл бұрын
Katniss was unablee to love, as she was obsessed with dying. Everything she did was just an excuse to die. She needed to sacrifise herself for her death to be unquestionable, that's why she came right away with the Berry thing and was perfectly cold headed about that decision. When she gets almost burnt to death she felt relieved, and was shocked to regain consciousness. The last chapter, when talking about their following years, she is so apathetic and emotionless because she had tried her best to be able to die, and she ended up being the one surviving, so she just would let life go on and make Peeta happy, because she didn't want to torment him more than he was... just with her numb heart day after day.

I only began watching the films last year lol. Was it actually that common that people were misinterpreting the ending that way? I have also only seen the movies once but I always understood that Katniss and Peeta didn't actually romantically love each other yet at this point. They were just trying to sell that idea to the audience (in the film) so they'd think that the real reason they tried to commit a double suicide was out of love for each other and not as an act of protest/defiance against the hunger games. Basically, they were trying to protect themselves.

The Hunger Games is such an interesting phenomenon. It came on the scene in a big way in 2012 and basically disappeared immediately from mainstream media after the last movie came out in 2015. At the same time, the core fanbase still knows exactly why they loved the books and movies so much. I only watched the movies properly for the first time about 2 years ago, read the books afterwards and the series has a special place in my heart since then. I re-watch the movies every now and then, listen to the soundtrack or watch movie commentaries on it. The movies have their flaws and I personally hated the third book but the THG universe is so interesting, I would love a re-make, TV series or spin-off (Haymitch's games, please).

I do like the books better, but one thing I appreciate about the movies (and why I think of the books and the movies as a unit together) is that they gave a much better sense of scope and scale. What we lost in the intimate thoughts behind Katniss's decisions, we gained in things like being able to see the Gamemakers in the game room, the reaction of District 11 to Katniss's relationship with Rue, etc. Those little glimpses made the 3rd book feel like much less of a genre whiplash.

All I can say *deep inhale* : READ THE BOOKS! They are soo much better than the movies and I'm not someone who always says that. Every moment in the books lost all their colors and depth when it was shown in the movies. Everything makes more sense when you read the books - the character's reactions and motivations, the politics behind everything. For example effie, she is brainwashed like all the other rich people, she REALLY truly believes it's an honor to participate in the games and it's somehow written that well that you can understand her. But slowly she looses her naive view when the story progresses and is totally changed in the last book. Oh and katniss isn't portrayed as a heroine, she makes selfish choices, gets more and more traumatized, basically looses her sanity. The books made me cry and think about morals and society. It's not a soppy Lovestory. The ending is realistic and not too fairytaily. I really recommend it. Edit: I didn't write this to criticise the video. Just as a tip for people who read this

It really wasn't a big deal for Primrose to get picked. What made it dramatic is that District 12 literally NEVER had a volunteer in all of its history, unlike all the other districts. Siblings never volunteered for each other in the past, which is why Peeta being called out was mostly glossed over (except by Katniss). Also, the younger the tribute the less likely they are to survive, so when you see a 12 year old get chosen as opposed to a 16 year old you're basically like, "Okay, you're dead."
@ghosthookcc2050
@ghosthookcc2050 Жыл бұрын
Primrose was a decently big deal getting picked because of the slim chances of her actually getting picked, turning 12 (Prim's age in the first movie) your name is only on one raffle ticket. People generally feel worse for the younger once getting picked so thats why its a decently big deal.
@ISetYourFaceOnFire

Holy fuck.... ur mindset. It definitely is a big deal for a preteen 12 yr old to get picked over someone older, even in a fictional story. Yea, the volunteering first time in history thing is a factor to, but a kid who just turned 12, is a fucking big deal. It's more than "okay, you're dead" it's "holy fuck, this kid doesn't deserve this, just like the other kids, but this kid is too young, it's horrendous".

2:26 ok so this scene in the movie was NEVER actually explained... which I thought was really weird because it was an amazing way of foreshadowing future events in the books. Basically, a girl and boy were running from the Capital (Obviously illegal) and the ship was chasing them. The boy was killed with a spear and the girl was captured and taken prisoner. Later on in the movie, the same girl is shown serving food to Katniss. Her tongue is now cut out and she is unable to speak and basically made a slave. So if I remember right them running away was the author's way of giving us a glimpse of what eventually happens with Katniss & Peeta throughout the series (They are always running from the Capital). The death of the boy was foreshadowing Rue's death. (They died the same way & in later books, her death becomes something Katniss often has visions and nightmares about and is a big part of her character growth) The girl being taken prisoner, having her tongue cut out and made a slave. (Throughout the book series, Katniss feels as though she is constantly a pawn doing things for the benefit of others, she's never fully in control) That's all I just thought it was weired they cut out such a good scene...

amazing analysis. I loved the books and I think that the movies cut out some rlly important scenes or didn.t stress those scenes enough. The books showed the horror of the hungergames way better and some of the challenges they had to deal with were just sadistic (like the beasts they had to fight in the end which looked like the dead players). Also I was kinda disappointed in the outfits during their preperation time before the games. They stressed how different they were from past district 12 contestors and how big the contrast between their life in district 12 and the life of the people in the capital (idk if thats the right term, I just know the german translation). The books were so dark. Just the last scene, were she wonders how she will have to tell her kids that they are playing on graves... it haunted me for months. Kinda a rambly comment, sorry 😂

I agree, the movies were still pretty good but it was sad how they left out quite a few important details like how prim getting picked was such a shock and was so unlikely. But amazing elaboration. I feel like the movies are rather meant to be entertaining and having a lot of action while the books are focusing more on the characters and their relations... but I guess that's how most movies and books are made. I do think you miss a big part if you only watch the movies without reading the books cause they explain so many things that couldn't be done in the movies :(

Yeah. I think films and novels are different mediums on their own but there are times when authors didn't like the films for the inaccuracies and changes that affected the book's entire points. Take a look at how Stephen King disapproved Stanley Kubrick's _The Shining,_ or Roald Dahl hated the adaptation of _Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory._
