This movie follows the books most faithfully. The books are literally just a bunch of small developments that happen in this guys life, but jumbled together since it's supposed to be written chronologically. They rarely have a single plot thread throughout, and that's realistic because most of us never have just one thing going on. We have multiple worries and developments to worry about.

The Diary Of A Wimpy Kid trilogy (yes, trilogy. The Long Haul doesn't count) is easily the best adaptation of a book series I've ever seen. The movies by themself may not be anything special but the movies as an adaptation are. It's very rare that you see an adaptation that is this exact to the original source material and that's why I love these movies so much

@@comebackstealing5913 While the Harry Potter movies are great, I'm not sure if they would be considered good adaptations from the OP's point of view since they start to deviate from the books more and more as the series progresses. The first two movies are very close to the books. The rest of them, not so much. I don't think a movie needs to be just like the source material to be considered a good adaptation. Movies and books are different mediums. Some things may work in one format and not so much in the other. Knowing what to remove or change is essential. A good adaptation for me transforms the book into the best cinematic experience possible without betraying what made the book special in the first place.

The reason for the vignette style presentation of the movies is that it's based on the book series by the same title, and in it the different stories were told through journal entries from different days, so the vignettes make sense. The first movie tried to make those into a more cohesive narrative, at least to me, while after that the movies became more direct adaptations, just taking the bigger stories and slapping them together

The whole point of doawk is that its basically the world’s most unfortunate middle schooler writing about all the shit that comedically goes down in his life. @@Ep8Script I'd go further: none of them are as bad as Greg portrays them. Greg is exaggerating things (or leaving some things he feels make him look bad) out, and we're none the wiser to what really happened because this entire story is told to us by him. His dad wasn't really ripping wires out of the TV (or maybe he was, but because Greg did something FAR worse than spend a day gaming), however throughout the events of Dog Days, Greg is annoyed with his father and portraying him accordingly. This would also explain why Greg seems to interact so little with Holly when he has the chance: he is, he's just awkwardly turning most of their interactions into cringefests, so he leaves most of them out. EDIT: Also I feel Greg is rather self-critical. There's no reason why anyone would at all like the kind of person Greg sells himself as, so it seems likely he's a decent, regular person (with a perchance for lying sometimes) with an habit of being self-critical. So basically, I think everyone in DoaWK is a normal person, we're just seeing the world as Greg sees it, biases very much included.

@@superultragiggachigga , personally I think it would take sort of a Seinfeld/Ed, Edd n Eddy route. You can have Greg, Rowley, or any other characters doing all sorts of shenanigans similar to in the book, yet every route they take turns into disaster at the end of every episode, with Greg not learning his lesson. Let’s start with book one for example. The episodes can each be about events that happened during each month (September-May). First 1-2 can be about Greg having to settle in middle school. Second can be events taking place on Halloween (including the gang chasing them). Third can be about Greg join wrestling and the school play. Fourth can be about Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Fifth can be about Greg breaking Rowley’s arm, joining Independent Study and Safety Patrol. Sixth can be the snowball incident and joining the cartoon newspaper. Seventh can be about Greg lying to Rowley about the Safety Patrol incident, getting kicked off, and their friendship is broken. Eighth will be Rowley and new friends and Greg thinking about whether or not he need him anymore. And the ninth will be about Greg seeing Rowley getting more popular than he is, leading to the two to fight, only for the gang from Halloween to return and make Rowley eat the c****e, but Greg takes the blame for it and the two’s friendship. Altogether, that’s about 11 to 12 episodes, some of them probably will get split into two segments. But that’s the general premise for each season. But depending on how author Jeff Kinney wants to end the series, Will probably the more difficult choice, since the final book needs to be Greg learning his lesson or not.

I’ll be honest, I’m in my twenties now and saw these movies as a kid. Personally, I loved it. It somehow all just made sense. These kids are in middle school, that’s what love was like for then introverts like me. You kinda just walk home together or make small talk and that’s about it. There’s a cool person you look up to, a friend who’s very different yet compatible. These just made sense even though I never had money for a summer camp let alone country club. I even found the Fred movies funny. These just make sense when you’re 12-14.
