Because there was so much demand for the Mazda3 video, that went live before this video but I will make the disclaimer that this video was recorded first. Join me as I take a deep-dive into the all-new 2014 Toyota Corolla with it's ginormous back seat and new CVT transmission.

Toyota builds the most reliable vehicles. My dads first car a 99 Corolla is our only car and it can handle Canadian winters ( -30 degrees Celsius, up to 2 feet of snow). The car currently has 297 000 kilometres so about 183 000 miles and the car only needed regular maintenance and new shocks because of the weather here

Agreed. Toyota is simple, reliable and easy to fix.. and now they even have better looks too. I had a Turbo WRX and downgraded to Corolla.. you'd think that's crazy, but I'm saving a bunch of on gas and I can fix anything on this car myself, I can even remove the engine, but the Subaru would've been insane.

I sat in the 2014 Corolla at the Autoshow and I'm very impressed with the interior. Toyota has come a long way on the interiors, but with the price for a fully loaded model topping $24K, economy cars are getting expensive! My $24K would be on a used Lexus.

100% with you on the Mazda3. Like I always say, the date recorded is key. I literally flew from an event where I drove the Corolla to an event where I drove the Mazda3 and I felt like I needed to rewind time and re-record the Corolla review with that in mind. Sadly time travel is not possible. Still, the Corolla isn't bad, it's just far from exciting.

I recently bought a 2015 Corolla LE (base trim) with some pretty good discounts and 0% APR. Traded in a 2008 RAV4 V6 (whose additional capabilities I really didn't need) for it and am very happy for the short time I've had it so far. It's nicely equipped, reasonably peppy, reasonably agile, efficient, and has usable, straightforward instrumentation. It has a similar footprint to the RAV I traded, and even more rear passenger room. The interior panels are a little chintzier, but otherwise I don't miss my old ride. I agree with this review pretty much full-stop, and it was very helpful during my shopping decision. Thanks for posting it!

The 4 speed auto is all about having a low base price. The auto is expected to be less than 9% of total Corolla volume but it allows them to cut the L model's price. 130 HP doesn't make the Corolla speedy but it is on par with the competition and the Corolla, despite growing significantly for 2014, only gained about 30 lbs.

I kinda wanna know why everyone gives Toyota such a hard time. Their cars are reliable, affordable, and I think they look great, especially the new models like the corolla. The car looks nice and performs well in its category, so why so much hate?

Because they are threatened and jealous of the success of Toyota. No one wants to be 2nd tier to someone else. Domestic fans are especially envious, as Toyota dethroned their now irrelevant Taurus, back in 1997.

There's some truth in both the replies from +Khemistry and +Patriot Fieri Back in the 70's and 80's Toyota, along with some other Japanese brands, stood well above other car brands when it came to reliability and bang for the buck. This pushed competition along just nicely, but also turned cars from domestic markets into bland copies of one another. This only got worse during the recent financial crisis. Many people, especially patriots, seemed to blame "foreigners" on the automotive industry's problems - Though I dare say people just didn't want to buy the bland econo-boxes they were selling. On a plus note, their reliability has improved quite a bit over the years, and by now, most western world cars are as reliable as Japanese cars, plus the price gap had been narrowed considerately. By now, I'd probably buy the Ford Focus, because I like it's design. The cars are almost the same across the borders, so it's like splitting hairs on which is better, so it's all down to personal preference. In other words, haters gonna hate, patriots doubly so. Don't worry about it and buy what you like the most.

Grumpy ol' Boot they were also quieter. smoother etc. thats not always true anymore. there was a huge gap between american compcts and asian ones until , say late nineties. huge.only car coming close to refinment was an escort. in compacts. that cant be said anymore. a lot of them got cheap. shit there was 2 or 3 years where consumer reports did not recommend the civic. like 2011 to 12 ? and he even says the toyota is noisy. they were very quiet. and mostly all except for what GM made had independant rear suspensions. who does that now ? i know from experience toyota got cheap in the late 90's. drive a 92 corolla , and then drive a 97. or even a 2004. big difference.
@Grumpy_old_Boot
@Grumpy_old_Boot 9 жыл бұрын
emil sponga Curiously, I've never driven any of the american compacts .. though that may be because I live in Denmark. Most of the compacts over here, during the 70-80's were either barebone automobiles, like the Mini Cooper or the Citroen 2CV, and indeed, those were apalling rackets, but also very cheap,which was a necessity, as WW2 had taken all our wealth away - Literally. Meanwhile, the bigger and more upclass cars, like Mercedes, BMW and Jaguar, they were just fine - Smooth like butter. As for the competition in the compact market, it was pretty good actually, we had Volkswagons, Peugout, Citroen, Fiat and Renault, to challenge the japanese brands. Mind you, the Japanese were still very successful. :)

Rented a 2014 Toyota Corolla for my roadtrip where I covered 1700 miles, with one 840 mile stretch from Dallas to Denver. I think the tire noise was what bugged me most, there's this higher pitched whine that comes into the cab at around 60mph. Good thing that the sound system sounds pretty impressive and is able to take attention away from road noise. Definitely a fan.

So have test driven both the 2014 Mazda 3s 5 door Grand Touring with the 2.5 engine and the 2014 Corolla in LE Premium trim. Clearly the Corolla is not as engaging as the Mazda 3. Having said this, I was definitely impressed with just how much they have improved the car over the prior model. It's actually a car you have to see in person to appreciate the styling. The interior is much nicer than the prior gen and the ride is so well tuned you really cannot tell it has a solid rear axle.

Awesome review Alex, as always!!! This 2014 Toyota Corolla have really improved both inside and outside. I would still pick the 2014 Mazda 3 as my #1 because it looks and drives better than the Corolla. The materials found in the Mazda3 also looks more premium compared to Corolla. That being said, this is an improvement from the outgoing model. I wish Honda would bring the EarthDreams technology along with the CVT Transmission found in Accord to the 2014 Honda Civic.

Alex, you are one of the best reviewers, but there is one question that bothers me a lot. Every day, I listen to, or read more than 10 car reviews. Almost all reviewers, including you, keep talking about soft plastic and hard plastic and everything else. They talk about the audio control, how to change the valium, but nobody talk about the quality of sound! Numbers are easy to find in web sides, but I really need to know about the sound. At least in a 22 minutes review, give 2 seconds to tell your opinion about the sound quality. Thank you
@AAutoBuyersGuide

I have found that sound quality is so subjective. I wish there was an easier way of passing that along but I found when I did comment on it everyone had their own opinion.

I split my day and drove the Corolla S and Corolla LE half the day. I can tell you the S is not that much more exciting to drive. I do find the S front end to be a hair more attractive and the gauge cluster is better looking as well but there is very little daylight between the two on the road.

Just a correction on your review. When I saw this review I was disappointed to hear Corolla offered no Power Drivers seat option. However, I still wanted to experience the Corolla in person so I went to my local dealer, requested an LE Premium and much to my surprise discovered it had an 8 Way Power Drivers seat. Not only that, EVERY Premium model (ECO, LE and S) all get 8 Way Power Drivers seats. w00t! Also I was impressed with how smooth the handling was given the Torsion Beam rear end. ;-)

Not sure why your Corolla would not have a 8 way power drivers seat. Passenger is manual pretty much across the board in the compact segment. The Power Drivers Seat is not bundled with the Convenience Package. Your car should have an 8 way power drivers seat unless that option was dependent on region. I just downloaded their E-Brochure which is not region dependent and it clearly states that S Premium adds Softex Leather and 8 Way heated Power Drivers seat along with 4 way adjustable pass seat.

Alex, could you please provide an opinion as to why the '14 Corolla is loud as compared to the competition; is it the lack of cabin insulating material, or the tires, or a combination of the two? I had a 2006 IS250 and then purchased a 2009 Corolla. That year was amazing for the Corolla, as it was quiet and comfortable. Has Toyota gone backwards?

Toyota makes the most reliable vehicles. Were they to make a sporty version of the Corolla with 200+ hp like the Civic or 250+ hp like Mazda 3, Focus then they would utterly dominate the compact category. 4 speed auto with its anemic horsepower won't excite the young crowd.

Alex on Autos Alex, accordiing to Toyota's website, the only version of the Corolla with the manual climate control is the base L model. Being that you have the touchscreen and the CVT transmission, you clearly have an LE model. So how is it possible that you don't have the automatic climate control when it's supposed to be standard on all Corollas except the base L trim?
