I meet up with some new arrivals in Vietnam to chat about their experience of life in Vietnam. We cover many of the pros and cons of living and teaching English in Vietnam as well as their experience of taking our in-class TEFL in Vietnam.
Other topics include their thoughts on riding motorbikes, street food, teaching english online, and the opportunities that all the free time you have allows for.
We also chat about the exciting projects they're working on, including starting a digital marketing agency and their own KZfaq channel called Trekyeah, at www.trekyeah.com
Make sure to head over to their channel to watch the interview we filmed for their channel, and subscribe for updates: • "Going Deep" w/ trekye...

Hey guys! Thank you for sharing your experiences! I’m so glad you guys like it there. I was born in VN, Danang. I lived in California for the most part of my life, but I had to leave to Texas because California is getting way too expensive. Now, Texas is getting too expensive too. Maybe I should go to VN like you all. Hope to meet you one day! 😀❤️. Have a happy time there and stay out of the rat race. I worked so hard for so many years and I can longer keep it up. So sad...there is no life in America.

Hallo Alex, hallo guys, this video is really good and helpful. Beginning with your guys first „nervous“ steps, going through the pros and cons the discussion and all you experiences gathered personally makes this video outstanding and valuable. Finally even more the iformation about blogs or panels like "trekyeah"! I will follow. I´d like to say that ALL videos offer the big advantage, that so many questions are answered in advance. This helps so much to prepare myself without writing too much mails. This saves time and energy. From a general overview down to details in different items the videos are structured very nice and provide many practical hints. Well done, Alex, I liked this group presentation of some teachers very much and I am looking forward to join you and to do this experience beginning in September. Best regards from Juergen

The only cons mentioned are one obvious one(pollution) and the small chairs? For those who want to hear more about it: 1- The people, while smiling and nice, are brought up by a disfunctional system and therefore they end up creating a disfunctional society, where every simple interaction can be frustrating, let alone the ones involving landlords and co-workers or bosses. People will lie, never admit their fault and in general not care about how unprofessional or rude their behaviour is. Basically, you are bound to deal with highly immature people and coping with it can be really, really hard. This is the worst issue and I feel it should be seriously stressed more often. 2- The city is not only dirty, noisy and crowded, it's ugly, without greenery and makes walking a challenge. Ignore who speaks of a certain "energy" or claims that the traffic is fun, it's so annoying to be forced to be in it every time you need to go somewhere, there's no choice, pavements are a joke(basically parking lots or occupied by local businesses), not to mention it is always too hot or pouring. But more importantly, the city is DULL. Sure you can drink cheaply, go to pool parties and nightclubs, but if you have higher life standards you can maybe go to a cafe with live music and that's about it. Movies are censored, language exchange is limited to Vietnamese and English, there's no access to theatre, there are no cultural events, even most sports are out of the question because of the heat. Expats are on average very shallow, interested in getting drunk, laid, and feel smart by earning easy money and avoiding responsabilities, some are weirdos who think that you can forget civilization once you are not in your homecountry and act like a beast as you please. I'll stop here, I also find the food disgusting, but that's pretty subjective(although the quality is terrible and slowly damages your body, that's a fact). Mind you, I have been here 8 months, I get paid 22$ per hour, I have a lot of free time and I have greatly enjoyed my trips around SEA, but there a lot of things to dislike here and people should really know about them before taking the plunge.
@sawyerthebest
@sawyerthebest 7 жыл бұрын
I would like to politely point out that your point makes no sense, a clear example: it is well known how the quality of the food is poor in China and there are no good standards of hygiene, but that of course does not prevent China from being the most populous country in the world.
@sawyerthebest
@sawyerthebest 7 жыл бұрын
You didn't understand. As I said, there are indeed benefits and I am actually quite satisfied with my job. My point was that there are also many, many negative sides and that it's important to talk about them, since dismissing the topic mentioning briefly the small chairs is not going to help anyone. About the golden rule, things simply don't work that way in Vietnam, sadly.
@sawyerthebest
@sawyerthebest 7 жыл бұрын
Listen, I am not interested in silly arguments, this has nothing to do with my main point. If you think that food quality and increasing population are two factors so logically related that you can rest assured about the levels of food safety, so be it. I can only encourage you to come here and actually try the food, its poor quality it's so evident that even Vietnamese people admit it, especially the ones who have been abroad(not even that far, let's say Malaysia) and were blown away by the obvious difference. Any research will confirm this.
@sawyerthebest
@sawyerthebest 7 жыл бұрын
Why the hostility and the personal attacks? As I said, my intention was to stress some negative points because they are real and often not discussed. There was no reason to talk in lenght about the good things(which are also real), since Alex's videos already do that quite well. I repeat that I like my job and I don't see how you can judge weather or not I am fit for it, since I have only spoken about the general experience of working and living in the country without mentioning details about my position. Also, it's important not to have prejudices, both positive or negative, and actually live through it to learn about the place. Leaving shortly after because of some initial bad impressions would be immature and not professional and I would not recommend it.

Hi Iowans, I'm from Illinois (with family in Waterloo)! I have a teaching degree, 3 years teaching experiences, a 120hr TEFL cert. and an open mind. I moved to Denver 4 years ago and LOVE it, but you are correct when you bring up the cost of living. I'm planning on moving to Hanoi in January and was wondering if you could recommend safe housing, areas closer to nature, reputable companies to apply to and maybe an expat forum?

hi guys! Thank you so much for the informative information! I am looking to move by August of 2018 to Vietnam, however I will be going by myself. I have a couple of questions. When would you suggest getting the TEFL and Visa before leaving? Also, any legit websites to find a teaching job? My plan is to arrive with a job. I've read how jobs offer healthcare and will help with individuals getting their Visa. However, where do I look for these jobs? Thank you! Nereyda

I think you can find some English jobs in Vietnam, at English center, absolutely you will just teach for hours or something like that. You can try to get.

Hussain, Statistically, it's nicer if you are good-looking-West-European-looking-male-looking (surprise). HCMC is huge and there is an endless list of English schools. I've met many non-native teachers here from all sorts of unexpected places. Many of them don't have certification. You can find jobs in language centers and also public schools, like I did (I'm Brazilian). Rates are from 15 to 25 usd/h, you can work 7 days a week if you want. You seem fit to work and I'd say you can get a job in two weeks. But guess what? In the end it all comes down to your personal talent to talk to people. You can believe that, or you can keep asking people who doesn't know you and has no business with you "what should i do then Sir", "where should I go"

I just watched the "cons" video. The ending terrified me. One of my biggest weaknesses is being assertive, and the thought of being given less hours than my contract stated is a big fear of mine. How bad is that? If you do decide to just leave that school once it starts to feel fishy, does the boss get mad and yell at you, etc.? Thanks
@pengfu8608
@pengfu8608 2 жыл бұрын
I think working on being more assertive and stand your ground firmly if you are not at fault is an important skill for all of us to develop, regardless of which country and job that you live in and work at. Be clear with work details, procedures and consistently communicate what you think is no right in a polite and respectful manner won't get you kicked out. It will earn you respect. In general, we Far East and South East Asians are pretty law abiding people but there are obviously the exceptions so do a lot of homeworks before you take off. Best of luck in teaching in Asia after the darn pandemic subsides.

Hi Alex, Have you encountered anyone teaching English in Vietnam or elsewhere in Asia with a degree in speech-language pathology? I have a BA and MA in speech/language from the U.S.; we're qualified to work with ELLs on accent reduction, but I think I'd still need my TEFL certificate? I'm having a difficult time finding any concrete info from other SLPs in forums. Thanks! (=

Of course I would also get a motorbike as well. I was in Vietnam for the summer, (first visit ever) and rented a bike and it was loads of fun. But since I already have a car here in California and would like to teach for several years, I would love to also bring my car with me.

Walking at night in US town , city a chance to get shot gun is a nightmare to me. Low to no tax leads to low Cost, high $$$ saving into your bank, so then we all have to deal with the polution garbage. Where as in North America is being controlled by TAX Tax TAX and TAX and bills again so that you can have the "b's clean , AC, high chair restaurant standard that paid by your tax so that enough to eat "frozen reheat processed food" or garbage McDonalds food level. Conclusion, cannot have everything in life at low cost.

Um... why isn’t anyone mentioning the obvious MOST IMPORTANT thing: HEALTHCARE!!?? Hospitals? Medicine? Do the doctors understand you? Do they prescribe “weird” or unorthodox medicine? If you get the flu, food poisoning, DENTAL problems, how do you even start to approach such problems? As a guy taking his girlfriend to live in Vietnam with him, if you ever need a gynecologist or something, what do you actually do?? 😂
