Another thing you have to realize is that for the crew in the cab, seeing a person stand between the gauge of the rail may bring back some nasty and genuinely painful memories if that engineer ever hit anybody.

Don't be that guy. This is why railroads don't like people doing stupid or irresponsible actions. If someone gets killed they have to write a report about it and having a LEO show up on your doorstep notifying you of a fatality regarding a family member is what nobody ever wants to have happen. Be safe, be careful, stay away from the tracks.

Props to the crew on this train, it drives me nuts when some garbage like that happens. The conductor as well to give you the pin that was really friendly of her!

As a retired trainman, I unfortunately had to see the results of stupidity, panic or suicidal behavior. Two lived, one just being slightly grazed, the other lost body parts. All the others were killed and they still visit me as I try to sleep

I’m glad he called him out. It’s people like him that stand in the middle of the track that to get pic get killed then their family blame the us engineers and company.

The guy is lucky. Up here on the Lake Shore, I've seen a couple of people trying to get a "money shot" standing in the gauge of the track when I'm barreling down the track at 77mph. So for those morons who are complaining about the Engineer, just know this: DO NOT SPEAK ABOUT OR JUDGE ANYTHING IF YOU HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED IT!!!!! The Engineer and train crew did nothing wrong.

All the respect to the both the engineer and conductor aboard that train. I've admittedly stood on tracks a few times but never when I knew a train was there. That guy just didn't care, all in all a very educational video!

“I don’t care if they buff, I don’t care if they take pictures. Don’t stand in the middle of the tracks” I’ve been foaming by that mantra all my life. Hell, in some instances, it’s been rewarding (got a hat from a CN crew, a couple safety vests and a cab tour back in the day)

I worked for the railroad for 40 years, 35 of those in engine service. I have had multiple fatalities and more close calls. From a distance the engineer has no way of knowing whether a person standing between the rails is suicidal or just stupid. I would have called it in especially since it's not the first time the guy in the orange t shirt has done that.

Avoid the sin, get a pin.

I'm 70, when I was 6 to 15 my family took the Golden State train from L.A. CA to Amarillo TX twice every year. The railroad employees were the nicest people. One lasting memory was the conductor spreading California Poppy seeds up the Grape Vine Hill. In the spring both sides of the track were covered with orange flowers. Great folks, lasting memories.

That's probably one of the overall best looking Amtrak trains I have seen a video of recently. The locomotives both look in good shape, very sharp paint job on the lead locomotive. The cars all look clean and in good shape. Over the last few years especially from both my experience viewing videos and in person sightings, alot of Amtrak equipment is covered with grime and the locomotives look beat to hell and in need of new paint. The nice thing about the stainless steel, a 40+ year old Amfleet car looks a fraction of its age when its nice and clean! Top notch video, seems like a friendly crew, despite the engineer being pretty irritated by the fellow in the orange shirt. Completely understandable though! Thank you for posting!

I’ve stopped my train before if ahead of schedule to just say a few words. If they would have seen or been through half of what I have, they would never stand between the rails. Much respect for this crew. Remember we’re by ourself in the cab. We rely on good people to keep everyone safe !!

That was sure nice of the conductor or brakeman. The guy in the orange shirt was really stressing out the engineer. The engineer doesn’t need that.

I'm impressed with the comments here, by you guys who are obviously rail fans. I'm impressed that you DON'T support doing something unsafe and illegal. There are a lot of people/hobbies where that's overwhelmingly not the case. Thank you, from a non rail fan retired paramedic, for being a conscientious rail fan.

I was a Special Agent with ICG RR in E. St. Louis, Ill! Got dispatched to a town just north where a 16 yo girl driving a Plymouth Fury ran around the crossing gate! The Amtrak Turbo Liner broadsided her. The front half of the Plymouth was located a half a mile toward St. Louis. The rear half was just the other side of the crossing. Sadly her brother and her never made it to school!

Me and my friend used to go railfanning all over the place me and him loved watching them come out of Allentown yard and always drove down by the Allentown yard to see what was going on and to see how full the yard was they had a hump in there too so we would watch the cars being humped it was cool to watch we also went to Lancaster to watch the steam trains and even rode on it and we went to Altoona to see horshoe curve and spent the weekend in Altoona going to the railroad museum and even was there during railfest I still remember all them years watching Conrail then when Conrail got bought out by csx and Norfolk southern we held up a big sign on horshoe curve in Altoona saying by big blue we will miss you with a face crying 😭 we got so many engineers blowing there horns and waving it was a sad day in 2002 my friend Bob passed away but the memories of us railfanning together will be something I will always cherish . I once had a guy in Parsons Yard Columbus OH lay down between the rails to take a pic of a train coming down the switching lead. Needless to say I had him thrown out.

I went with my friend to watch a train pass. We stood back from the track about 100 feet. I figured that if something broke or an object on a rail got hit and propelled my way I might have enough time to duck behind a tree. My friend is a real rail fan. He had a small riding railroad that circled down a hill, over a trestle, past his dad's house (it was his dad's project) and crossed a driveway, with a wig-wag, up the hill and back to the train barn. It was a sweet arrangement.

I really love this! It shows how doing things right and not breaking the rules actually gets people somewhere! My heart is full after your reward for being a stand up human! Great Video of amtrak and that was so nice of the conductor to give you a gift 📦,When I'm train spotting at one of my spots in Atlanta I see people walking and taking pictures on active tracks but not taking pictures when the train is coming and the gates are down.

When I was a second trick maintainer in Philadelphia during the afternoon rush, we normally found kids walking in the gauge to get from one place to another on their way home from school... and I had to explain to them what would happen if they didn't hear the electric powered commuter train coming up behind them. Fortunately, I never found pieces of kids along that stretch of track.

People like the guy standing on the tracks give everyone a bad name. It's never worth your life for a good shot.

Remember that when filming or taking photos that you are watching someone do there JOB. It can be incredibly frustrating to be filmed or watched while doing a job so cut them some slack. They are making a living and one incident can cause them their job because you wanted a photo.

I get such a rush when a train goes by that I never get from cars. Trains built this country way more than automobiles have. No matter how big and cool you think your truck is, it does nothing for me.

Train engineer here, idiots standing between the rails piss off engineers and conductors. We have no clue whether you’re going to get out of the way in time because you’re taking a picture or if you are some crazy nut attempting a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

This is an interesting experience which I have not seen nor heard(since I haven’t Railfaned so much, and since I am also 14), but that is dumb thing to do. It’s literally common sense. Anyways that was pretty nice of the conductor giving a pin! Hope at least that happens to me once! Nice catch of the Pepsi special livery!

Never stand between the rails like the guy in orange. It means you have to cross at least one rail to get out of the way of the train.

A year or two back I read a news article about a photographer who stood on the tracks to get a shot of a steam train. It didn't end well for the photographer.

Try that a few years back around East London UK where I did my driver training. The Engineer running at that speed would have been out and battered the crap out of him. Makes my blood boil.

One time at the train station in Dallas I was so focused on finding a working ticket kiosk that I crossed the tracks while the train was approaching. I was mortified when they honked at me. Can’t imagine having the gall to do this

That engineer is too nice and too patient. I've seen an engineer drag a kid off the track before. Definitely is an embarrassment for all Foamers (non derogatory context). JFK loved Foamers, and so do I. Those that remember them days will tell you, being called a foamer was a name of honor. It was the "respected king" feeling. I wish they would of called it in honestly. Wouldn't mind seeing the police trespass him.

Anytime I feel like screwing around with railroad stuff, I go visit the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport, Maine. I'm fortunate enough to live close by

Amtrak Trains are VERY territorial and protective of their tracks! One must never disturbed a passing train!

This is really simple, coming from someone from the other side of the pond where trains move a darned-sight faster than here, IMHO. Stay the heck off the tracks. That buffoon is the kind of person who spoils things for everyone else. Who thinks standing in the center of the tracks, in full view of the Engineer, is a good idea? Does the Engineer hit the brakes when he sees you or does he/she assume you'll move?

As freight Engineer I hit three one lived my Conductor has the gruesome job to render assistance it wasn't pretty and the one I hit I can still see him I will never forget that was at 40 mph Amtrak at 90 mph wow!
