As a kid, I wouldn't have gotten why it made ppl wanna cry (though rest assured that I understand now). For me, I was addicted to this song because it made me feel really happy in a strange, new and strong way, unlike anything I'd ever felt before in my child life; and I just couldn't get enough of it! To this day, it remains a comfort song of mine.

It's funny how you mention this "nostalgic sadness" that comes from the song's construction, because I feel the same way with Sonic 3D Blast's end credits theme for the Genesis version, knowing that that was Sonic's last Genesis outing, plus also being one of the last official games released for the console. It just gives off this "end of an era" vibe, and I wonder if that's what Jun Senoue intended.

Yep :) can confirm. As an 8 year old playing this game, I used to play this level on repeat to listen to this song. It felt so nostalgic, like it was unlocking a long forgotten memory I didn’t know I had. Like saying hello or even goodbye to an old friend 🤷‍♂️ As a kid, I just assumed that this was the place on Angel Island that Knuckles had been born, as it was underground, the music was nostalgic and you could actually play as him here 👍😅

A year later, i changed schools and thought i would never seen him again, but when i was in 8th grade, i came back to that school and i found a person who was familiar for me, i became his friend, then days later, i realised he was Nicholas. Maybe i'm just dumb, but that was interesting.

This piece of music made me cry so much when I first heard it as a kid, and I never knew why lol. Even now it has this sad quality to it that makes me tear up, except that it really is actual nostalgia. This game (the two cartridges together) was the last time I ever enjoyed a Sonic game - it's been decades. None that came after this really captured the feeling in either gameplay or music. I recently watched the Sonic 2 movie, and the nostalgia it brought up made me seek out Sonic 3 content again lol. And I found this channel.

Maybe the reason the strong use of the 7th degree in a melody can feel so nostalgic because its this absolute longing to return to the roots, to the home key and that tension that comes with it, and also dissonance from being one of 2 notes being a semitone interval and having more weight

There's pretty much 3 melodies/rhythms that signify return to the classic era in Mania. Teaser Trailer: Uses the beginning of the Sonic 3D Blast Ending, which basically was the end end of Classic Sonic, and said teaser said that they were going back Beginning Beginning of Mania's Title: Uses the rising notes found in Sonic 1, one significant part of "returning to Classic Sonic" As you said after that part: Endless Mine's rhythm means we've picked back up on the good ol' 2D spritemation days

Man, I'm so glad I found your videos because despite having no drive to practice any music I find musical Theory infinitely interesting and I'm super appreciative for the depth you go into each of these songs! There's other channels where musical expert listen to a song and go "ha ha yup, this is good" and say basically nothing else, and then there's ones who's depth have taught me a lot and given me a greater appreciation for the thought and work that goes into writing Great and Fitting music for all kinds of media. The simplicity of your explanations somehow has granted me more "aha!" moments than any other channel I've watched before. and I had to come back after a few days and leave this comment because this song in particular is one I'd never listened to or heard of before watching your video, but it makes me want to cry. I'm so glad I wasn't the only person who grew up with the more niche/lesser known sonic games like Adventure and 3D blast! I KNEW there was something I love about the panic puppet zone! And it took me an embarassingly long time (until about 2010 or so) to realize that most of the songs in Adventure are either remixes (or play motifs from) 3D blast. A bit unrelated, but the song that plays for the twinkle park racing minigame in Adventure plays a part from sonic's theme ("It Doesn't Matter"), particularly my favorite part, the refrain (I believe? I'm not a music person). It feels so upbeat and cheerful and god, it has to be one of my favorite "high moments" in any video game song. It doesn't matter where or how you play it, those notes are way too happy. Also, I used to play sonic 3 with my brother doing the versus mode and all that. I COMPLETELY forgot about this song/stage. I totally forgot it even had multiplayer. And now that I hear this, yeah, at the age of (however young I was) it was making me feel things too. Not /too much/ though because my brothers' presence and the competitive nature of the mode was a bit distracting from the music. Where I truly felt emotions though was Adventure's happy soundtrack. Would DIE to see a video on Emerald Coast (my absolute favorite music piece from any first level in any video game ever.)

I think that the purpose that Endless Mine was made like this was for the purpose of reminding you that this is the last stage of Multiplayer, and that it sadly is where it all ends.

This is the first video I've watched from you and was pleasantly surprised to hear you sing the example songs. That was a treat and effective! Also I started losing my mind when you sang "Baby" with the reverb on (and all the other songs in that section) because it is one thing to know "yeah a lot of songs use the same chord progressions". It is an ENTIRELY different feeling to have them presented rapid-fire like that. Loved that. XD

Awesome Channel!! Finally, somebody talks about the feeling that we feel when we play Sonic. Since childhood I percept this 'sad' and nostalgic felling when I heard Endless Mine Zone theme and others, like Bridge Zone in Sonic 1 of Master System. Great video, congratulations to the channel. Keep on work!! 👏👏👏 Sorry for my english.😁 Greetings from Brazil! 👍

Honestly, this track honestly gives off similar nostalgia vibes to some of the Sonic Mega Collection tracks. It would be neat to see an analysis of the history track.

I don't know anything about music, but this video is some professional production, and I'm really impressed. You certainly deserve more than 30K subscribers.
