Yep, he was my favorite character. Just as the actual Alfred was the smartest guy in any room he occupied, this guy is the best actor in any scene in which he is featured.

Michał Nycz, he is like Littlefinger and Twin Lannister at the same time. Excellent at his role of a leader in troublesome times. The episode where he surrender his faith in Christianity and let the Pagan Queen do a sacrifice ritual to save his son was so MOVING.

+Starhunter Terra Good point about him being a Machiavellian character; but where Tywin or Baelish lack the most basic human love - you can see in that scene you mentioned that Alfred clearly loves his son and is ready to do anything to save him - even as it makes him question his beliefs. Alfred is a statesman, but he is also a real father. That is what I love about this character and David's portrayal - a man behind the myth.

Him along with leofric and beocca are the elite actors and characters in the last kingdom. Uhtred is awesome but Alfred I felt was the true main character he literally owns every scene he is in.

I almost did not watch it, thinking the other young chap was just another john snow copycat(game of thrones) but once watching King Alfred I was lured to the whole series. I loved it, because of the good acting David Dawson contributed.

Yep hands down one of the best scenes in drama, what I wanted out of Game of Thrones after reading the books but Benioff & Weiss could never make scenes like that after going off the books. There were so many great scenes in Season 3 that really sink in after a rewatch knowing how things go down after that scene between Uhtred and Alfred.

Ehhh, not exactly to the idea of England, but rather he doesn't join up with the Danes because he sincerely doesn't want to go down in history as his own people's destroyer. More like his loyalty to the tribe, than his loyalty to a state, which is still rooted in paganism and his Danish upbringing.

Hamza Changazi I agree but when reading the books, I always felt there was a sense of pride attached to Uhtred in that deep down he did believe in the idea of England, but he could never admit that as he would lose his leverage.

He does do a great job, but Uhtred only stays loyal to Alfred to maintain his goal to one day rule over his land by birth right. He wants to be seen as an elder man. A Dane at heart, I don’t think he gives 2 shits about a Saxon England other than the reason I stated before.

Why David Dawson isn't a three time Emmy award winner is beyond me. David's portrayal as King Alfred was brilliant and the best performance in the entire series.

Exactly. The historical Alfred had to have been an ice cold badass to get done what he got done. I loved it when Leofric told Uhtred that Alfred was ruthless. And he trusted nobody he thought would jeopardize his vision. The television show didn't really illustrate all the things he achieved: he had cities built in strategic places that were specially designed for navigation and fortification. He knew, like Sun Tzu, when it was important to flee, and hid in the marshes, directing his men in guerrilla warfare against Danes. There was peace for almost 20 years and he embarked on an educational reform that involved translating important ecclesiastical writings into English, and encouraged his priests to read and write Latin, necessary for conducting business abroad. He learned Latin when he was 35 and translated four books into English. What the series also doesn't show is how much his daughter Aethelflaed contributed after his death to subjugating the Danes. As the Lady of Mercia she, like her father, had a head for strategy and shared his vision. She took command of the armies, beat back the Danes, negotiated with them, and helped fulfill his dream of England. NOT Uhtred. She didn't need to be rescued in this film constantly. Eventually, the Danes capitulated, said to hell with it, married English women, got converted, started speaking English (or a pidgin that introduced a lot of Scandinavian words), and the whole island became Englalond, and not Denaland. I love it that this man did all this despite an illness that wracked his nerves. The thin, nervous, intellectual Alfred in the series makes a great foil to Uhtred, who has such a hard time committing. Alfred despised him for that and for his bad manners, distrusted him, was terribly jealous of him as a warrior, and admired him--all tremendous character detail that makes this show so great.

@@angryyoungman66 I think Vikings is set in late 8th century, Alfred the Great (the guy in this show) reigned around the same time period so probably yes. But both shows really had freedom in portraying both characters but I'll say The Last Kingdom portrayed him better and more accurately.

Yes, Alfred is really thin and sick, and his personality in the books is just like in the series. Really good adaptation! And his wife is as annoying as in the books xD

Having read all the books I totally agree with you. His portrayal of Alfred was exactly how I imagined Alfred when reading them. By all accounts the portrayal is pretty historically accurate.

To be fair whilst sickly he is described as quite tall and a keen hunstman so he probably wasn't small. He just wasn't anything special in regards to other warriors is all.

Yes -- "hard and decisive presence." So much MORE so than Alfred in Vikings. He probably did, too, in real life. His biographer hints that he was exceptional as a child.
