Schnittke's bizarre and overwhelming 1983 Faust Cantata, 'Seid nüchtern und wachet...'. This amazing composer deserves a special place in history for his range of music. The video comes from a 1989 film, Two Stories of Alfred Schnittke, which separates performances of the cantata and symphony no. 4 with interviews of Schnittke describing their creation. Valery Polyansky conducts. The other names are in the introduction.

I just love it (My sister & I always had a shared discotheque/bibiotheque, and we found this around 1992 (with the Malmö Symphonic Orchestra), and love it since. Thank you, Alfred Schnittke, and all the artists here ! So comical, and virtuoso at the same time, moving, powerful !

How is this work not performed more often? One of Schnittke’s best scores; this music tethered precariously between the sublime and camp. What a masterpiece!

Great masterpiece❤ Schnittke was genius. To this video - one unimportant and first charming fact is that it was not good idea to give to opera diva kind of pop music hand microphone :-) She is fencing with it absolutly unstable so was no way possible to capture to record constant voice signal. You can find that synchro her video vs. her voice is not the same. Her voce was probabbly overrecorded later in studio. But as I said, it' s only technical small and charming moment to this great concert performance.

I have adored this piece for many many years but only discovered this gem of a performance just now, apart from the camera taking me back to how I felt as a teenager after one too many sweet sherries and I'm none to sure how sober that marvellous woman was! plus the sound quality being truly mashed up in certain vital passages overall aint it bloody marvellous! One of the few that id sequester to my desert island so how come Ive never seen it performed? Letter to the Times methinks?

Some moments are reminiscent of Shostakovitch Katerina Izmailova. Shnitke was Shostakovitch good student.

it looks clearly dubbed, you can also see sometimes that she gets a powerful voice with zero effort, or that the intensity stays the same even when she moves the mic. it's a fake performance imo

I always get a sense, listening to post-modern/polystylistic music like this that I'm being taken for a ride. There is soething cynical about it. It doesn't seem to have a soul. When it doesn't sound like bad Shostakovich it sounds like early Penderecki, when he was playing at being an avant garde composer.

In general a fantastic performance, although I felt that Es Geschah was greatly hindered in quality by the poor alto performance. She sounded drunk and lazy throughout her performance, and she wailed on the extremes of the range.

She is maybe a little bit over the top or histeric for some but she has a real talent for these crazy low notes. Craziness... Its written this way... her way to interpret it. I mean it is extremely difficault to perform. Begining is super low and later on super high for Alto. Must have some serious alto low notes and the high ones of mezzosoprano. I would die happily if Ewa Podleś would perform this! As a real contralto! PS watched it few times in a row... Is it just me or is it some serious lip sinc going on on this part?! (Going on the stairs and later on when the low part is going on she has a closed mouth?! Hope I am seeing wrong...)
