Asombroso haber llegado a cantar este solo de La Hija del Regimiento, con todos los 9 Do de pecho, y sin fallar en ninguno de ellos, solo, y en toda la excelencia y grandeza de sus condiciones técnicas y vocales, y con sus 59 largos años de recorrido, Alfredo Kraus fue realmente un tenor, un verdadero maestro y un cantor asombroso hasta la médula.

Vi faccio notare un piccolo particolare: negli acuti esce un tal volume di armonici che i microfoni non ce la fanno a riceverli tutti e sono costretti ad abbassare il ivello di registrazione. Io ho avuto l'onore e il godimento puro di ascoltarlo dal vivo e posso assicurare che in certi momenti le orecchie soffrivano alquanto (per il volume, sia chiaro, non certo per l'interprete...). Incredibile.

I heard Kraus,opposite a young Sumi Jo,at Covent Garden,in L'Elisir D'Amore .(She was 30, he was 65) He sang without fault,especially in Una Furtiva Lagrima (which broke the audience's hearts.!) How did he go on singing for so long? He husbanded his voice. He never attempted(wisely) anything that would have damaged his voice.He never sang roles that he didn't sympathize with. He liked the sound that he made. Leontyne Price said,if you don't like the sound that you produce,you won't get anywhere. Not only this,but he was a good actor,never going over the top, but knowing where and when he could add some flourishes. He fits (for me) into the category of wonderful, cultured legato tenors:~ Kraus Wundelich Bjorling Tauber. The late great English soprano Isobel Baillie said‎- "Never Sing Louder Than Lovely" and these tenors followed her advice. For this we must be eternally grateful.
