Ciao Davide, I wonder if the police was only there to ensure your safety? In some regions, I have heard about that. Such a great video again!
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 ай бұрын
Hey Frank! They told me it was for my own safety. That's what they always tell you in these situations. Who knows what's the real reason is, most likely they dont want any problem in their territories which is understandable from one side but surely you're not really free if the police tails you around and prevent anyone to approach you as well as restricts your itinerary etc. There is a definition for that kind of safety: police state.

@@DavideTravelli if you got lost or killed it would lead to diplomatic issues, of course they will want to keep you safe as many reckless tourists dive into trouble headfirst
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 ай бұрын
@alboud it’s a diplomatic issue ONLY when the police, army, or intelligence agencies are responsible for harm, as seen in the tragic case of Giulio Regeni in Egypt. Thousands of tourists die every year worldwide, yet this hasn’t led to widespread implementation of police states. For example, many people drown at beaches, die climbing mountains, skiing, hiking, or engaging in other adventurous activities. However, most countries have not resorted to constant surveillance or heavy-handed policing as a solution. The approach of a police state, where tourists are followed and their movements restricted, undermines the essence of freedom and exploration that travel should embody. Ultimately there is no safety if personal freedoms are compromised.

That's the official explanation, however given that there are hundreds of comments in my Algerian videos claiming I'm a spy perhaps they wanted to keep an eye on me. Second they didnt allow anyone to stop and talk to me, when anyone tried they sent them away. Third I wasnt free do go where I wanted to but they took me to the hotel and asked the hotel personnel to inform then whenever I was leaving the hotel. If I'm not able to travel freely in a country for me there is no point going there.

If you have followed other adventurers trips around Algeria, you would know that starting from Ghardaïa or around the beginning of the Sahara and down south, police escort is mandatory due to security issues in all the neighboring countries. Also, some foreigners managed to not be followed by being smart, avoiding usual roads, keeping a low profile and a bit of luck.
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 ай бұрын
I didnt really look into others adventures, I tried to find some other bike travellers accounts but nobody ventured south. I was aware that the south is a special area because you need to require basically a different visa but none of the official information specify (Algerian government web sites) where the south starts. I thought Bou Saada was not that south.
@cocothefly
@cocothefly 2 ай бұрын
@@DavideTravelli Indeed, Bou Saada isn't that south, we call it the gates of the Sahara and yes you were a bit unlucky, usually things start to get complicated around Ghardaïa. I find horizons unlimited forum very informative, it is meant for Motorcycle Traveller but same would apply for you.
@DavideTravelli
@DavideTravelli 2 ай бұрын
@cocothefly Yes I thought it was just a bit of bad luck or someone at the village called the gendarmerie. I would have liked to go a bit more south than Bou Saada but having the police tailing me was not really appealing and my visa was very short, realistically I could have gone south only one more day or two. Thank you for the tip on the horizons unlimited forum, I'll bookmark it for the future.

The Algerian gendarmerie dedicates substantial resources to keep foreigners safe. Any incident, like getting lost or attacked, could lead to a diplomatic issue with your country and negatively impact tourism and foreign investments. You’re not alone in this; many others, including employees of multinational companies, also receive escorts in the desert. We understand it’s annoying for someone who wants to wander in the sahara, but it’s the price you pay for your safety.

The police offered to accompany you to show you the way. Otherwise it's normal to be stopped, the police do their job like all police officers around the world. Police officers monitor the roads to prevent Moroccan and sub-Saharan African drug traffickers from passing through Algeria. The Algerian authorities are doing an exceptional job to prevent their country from being invaded by drug traffickers, smugglers and migrants from neighboring countries. Without the Algerian police, Europe would be no longer under attack by migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. They do their job, and everything is fine if you follow the laws. It's the same as our police officers in Europe. In Italy or France, we have to comply with police identity checks, so in Algeria it's the same thing.

There are many foolish tourists who are waaay too confident who wonder in the Sahara and get lost than die like idiots in the desert (this happens even in the US Texas ) 🙂🤦🏼‍♀️ this is why the police and even sometimes the army worries about tourists and also because we are surrounded by unstable countries drug dealers in Morocco and maybe terrorists who come from Libya Mali Niger so yeah it’s safe but someone must always be careful for bad encounters because if something happens to you they will be in trouble for not doing their job well but I do agree that it must be annoying , also when people ask you about Islam and if you’re married 😅this is just the type of conversation people have here they wanna make a good impression as Muslims 😊 ( because you know how the western propaganda channels always portray us as terrorists and all )

I am a careful traveller, I always know where I am and I have measures in place for emergencies if they should arise. Having said that things can happen when venturing around the world and accept consequences. I'm a peace with the fact that I might not go home alive but very happy about having really lived for ten years of my life I have been on the road.

Thank you for your welcoming, respectfully I disagree on your stand on protection. A place where police follow tourists around is the definition of police state. There is nor safety nor protection is personal freedom is compromised.

Despite the unpleasantness of the distrustful police, you managed to have a very nice time and show great footage. I am surprised that no women were in the video-we know pretty much that all those beautiful food dishes were prepared by women. They are so Bronze Age. We women are people too! Nothing to be afraid of either 😀 As always your stills / postcards were AWESOME. Thank you Davide for showing us the world.

Thank you Gina. The first day I didn’t seen any women but the second household I have seen the woman who cooked the meal and I think she made the pottery. She didn’t have the hijab perhaps she was Amazigh (Berber) not Arab but I do know they don’t want to be on camera so I didn’t even asked. If feel a bit disrespectful to take out the camera when invited in someone’s house, I never did it in the past but I try to document more of my journey.

"Bronze age" because women aren't being filmed in the privacy of their own homes? Is that really your main takeaway from all the hospitality Davide documented? Talk about prejudice.

You have not made a critic, you made a stupid statement: you said the room was not expencive. Which is a really stupid statement because it might be cheap if you hare rich but if you have only a few euros is very expencive. It''s all relative. I have been on the road since 2015 so if I had to pay 24€ for each and every night I would have spent over 65,000 Euro. Now do you still think it's cheap?!?

I agree police presence is very annoying, but actually it's their orders regarding any foreigner traveling in the south ... Basically, the Algerian officials doesn't want to call Georgia Meloni and tell her that an Italian national (called Davide) is caught by a terrorist group... Precautions, that's all...
