In terms of indicator based trading, I recommend using the ATR for SL placement. You do not need to worry about how the line relates to the chart. You are focusing on what the ATR value is for a particular candle. For example, when placing a trade, find the ATR value and multiply it by 1.5x - 3x (depending on volatility) to find your Stop Loss. Example: If the ATR is 5. For a long trade you would place your SL at (ATR x 1.5 = -7.5). So, if the price is $100, you would place your stop loss at $92.50. That way you include average price in your SL placement which, obviously, is a fundamental of mean reversion. This should stop you from getting stopped out too tightly however, if you are still experiencing this then I recommend using the Donchian Channel instead of Bollinger Bands as they work differently but still within the realm of mean reversion and tends to give you more accuracy when trend trading. Im wondering if the strategy makes sense but only if you have a fixed lookback window that is covering a particular trend or regime. You can’t go back too far or clearly you’re right. But within some window it might be valid that the price is range bound, and then mean reverting

@Justin what I meant was,if you look at 20 period SMA across a rolling window of 200 periods you might not see mean reversion, but if you look back at only 50 periods with a 20 period SMA you might see mean reversion, and then later on it will go away. It can happens for a bunch of periods during ranging market, perhaps. Regardless of timeframe. You have pick your #periods subjectively depending on recent support and resistance level's, for example.

@Justin Williams My point is that you say mean reversion never works because we constantly see a new mean the more prices we include in the calculation. Which is obvious. But if you move the starting point of your calculation so that you are only applying mean reversion within a narrower window of dates- don’t you think it can work? And when it stops working , let’s say you’ve had 3 losing bets in a row- you stop the strategy and wait for the next opportunity. You spot the next opportunity by applying the strategy only to the demo account. Once you’ve had three winning bets in a row you take a real position again.

I am just here to learn mate. I will test something slightly different. I will look at the distribution of returns across a window of periods. I will roll that. I want to see how likely a return is, given a certain distribution is in play. If it’s an outlier than I can apply mean reversion. If the distribution has shifted then I cannot. I get what you are saying , the mean is always changing as price marches on. But the distribution of returns is moving in the same way you think?

You are looking for the holy grail! (which does not exist). The only way to know that you are starting a trend is to lose a mean reversion trade, and the only way to know if you are getting into a range is to lose a trend trade. A good system will only lose on these shifts

A good way to know if you are likely to end a ranging period is when price fails to bounce to the next bollinger band extreme (it will make a double bottom), hope this helps!

This was meant to be a guide and specs to the mean reversion strategies in general, I published a number of actual strategies in other videos. Good rule of thumb though is to put in some work in yourself as well
