I think this description fits the whole Sumeru archon quest as well. I fainted, met Collei and Tighnari, then oh Dunyazard so nice, then Samsara dream harvesting, oh hi Dendro archon, oh no Dunyazard dead so sad, then Dunyazard alive happy ending, and we meet psychopathic doctor and oh Scaramouche is with him, plan to save Nahida with the help of a bunch of people we just met, WTF HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO DEFEAT THIS TRANSFORMER, Nahida rescue plan succeed, and she explains things to us and FVCK SO OUR TWIN IS FROM THIS WORLD??? and now I'm in the Caribert quest :P

Did anyone really need an explanation throughout the thing tho? It was leading up to a twist so explaining it in between would kill the vibe, and everything that happened was pretty clear by itself once the twist happened. I'm just here disappointing that we didn't get to see more of his history in the academy, am I the only one who wanted that?

to some extent, I think he tries to be a bit ruder than necessary, because it means people don't bother him. I wish I could do that sometimes (I get overly polite because I fear criticism) He can be nice, I think, since he got that one NPC character in the Archon Quest in Aaru Village to talk to us about the Village Keepers.

I think my issue with Al-Haitham isn't so much that he's rude, but that he is so utterly self contained that it comes off as blunt. Everything he does is ultimately for the sake of himself and his own interests, which makes him something of a selfish fair weather friend and one of those people who believes everyone who isn't as skilled is just not working as hard or they're inherently flawed in a way that he isn't. For example, he claims that Kaveh was an idiot who got scammed by a medical charity despite Sumeru having free healthcare. Forgetting of course that this isn't the case for Eremites and Desert dwellers, because that's not something that would concern him on a personal level. He's not cruel by any stretch, but intelligence doesn't preclude ignorance

Eremites basically a bandit, a mob that would steal, except when they decided to work as a guide, guard, or corps of thirty. So... yeah... I think Kaveh is being scammed again 😅 Also I don't think Alhaitham is selfish, atfirst he refuse traveller to help him looking for Dori, he also not put anyone even himself in danger in the Archon quest, he's not purposely putting anyone in danger like some Cavalry Captain from Mondstad we knew lmao. His story quest explained him a lot tbh :D

@@gannmegann Yes he is wrong, because let me clarify (and this is quite long, I am in the middle of a thesis and my brain won't Stop): The desert is a huge place. Look at the map, look at where Aaru village is and then compare it to say the Tanit camp. Even if one place has a doctor is that supposed to be enough for every single person living there? I dare you to walk into a hospital and inform them that everyone working can go home, we only need one dude in charge to deal with every medical problem for the entire region. Make it make sense. Second, and this will delve into themes of prejudice and stereotyping so buckle up, it's kinda fucked that we're meant to assume that every Desert dweller (aside from the "good" ones that the game tells us are the "good" ones) are all morally corrupt bandits. Even the Mongols and Vikings, despite pop culture depictions, weren't exclusively opportunistic raiders. Ostensibly I know it's because we need random encounter enemies like the Treasure Hoarders and hilichurls, but the TH aren't a "nation" and the hilichurls get a lot of sympathetic depictions where we are supposed to question our treatment of them despite their monstrous appearance. The idea that the Eremites are inherently bad and undeserving of help or the benefit of the doubt is uh......yikes. Never mind the fact that they are the only nation in the game exclusively filled with dark-skinned characters. I could delve way deeper, but my point here is this: even if Kaveh was scammed, the explanation given shows a distinct lack of care for the issue beyond "Sumeru has free healthcare, duh". Al-Haitham is an intelligent man, there are plenty of reasons why something can be a scam beyond "the person who asked was from the Desert and they shouldn't be trusted, that's just objective fact". It's not logical, and coming from a dude whose whole deal is that he thinks everything through, it's downright lazy. *TLDR:* I personally do consider Al-Haitham to be selfish, but I do not think he is unlikable or a bad person. I think he is self-contained and largely uninterested in other people unless it pertains to his own interests. So depending on whether you want to explain this through a Watsonian or Doylist lens, Al-Haitham is either not immune to the biases of the Rainforest where he was born (an interesting bit of character development) or the devs used cultural biological essentialism as a narrative shortcut (kinda lazy).

There are teachers that way, who can't handle that kids believe the teacher is unnecessary for them. I've tried self studying a lot in class, only for the teachers to get pissy even when I already know everything they're teaching, and they know that too. Doesn't matter. They just get annoyed if I'm reading something else... Even if it's their own subject, just a different topic. If you're a random kid it's fine, but they want the top performers to be teacher's pets where I am, to atleast have the self satisfaction of "it's thanks to my efforts this kid is doing so well." So my existence that did nothing but scream "You're so useless that I, one who never even pays attention to you, still performs better than everyone else." Is a great trigger point to them. So many times they'd start quizzing me on the current and future topics just to "put me in my place" and get me to pay attention, yet I answer all correctly and even correct them on shit, and all they do is get annoyed further and say "You're just not allowed to" and either give up or take my book away. Prideful teachers are a shameful existence.

Then again, I had an alcoholic art teacher who smelt of alcohol in class and would get mad over the smallest thing and make the students feel bad about it, she even tried to correct my drawings, which were manga style. She had no clue about manga or that sort of art style and ruined one of my drawings. I hated her so much, so I can't say I'm surprised by some teachers being immature and stupidly prideful. Sad world we live in. People like that shouldn't be allowed to even teach. They should instead encourage the students to self teach and reach new heights. I was an underachiever myself and skipped school a lot, so I can't stay I relate, but I will say, good on you and glad you gave those so-called 'teachers' what they deserved. I agree that teachers shouldn't be so prideful.

The current education system is very flawed that it encourages high grades over actual learning. Add prideful teachers and oof. Just because someone is very knowledgeable in a subject it doesn't mean they are a good teacher as teaching is its own skill. Your experience really does sound similar to what Alhaitham had gone through and it really isn't fair for you the student.The fact that those teachers want their students to reach your level does show how intelligent and out of the box you are to gain their attention so reminder of how awesome and smart you are if you needed to hear it! The world needs more thinkers like you because without them, how does humanity progress? I was lucky to have a homeroom teacher who disagrees with that concept and encourages self studying and overall any type of learning. Literally, she will take the time to learn how a student learns and tries to encourage it into their main subjects because she believes every student is unique in how they learn and that anyone can learn. Hence my line.

@@ReptilianTeaDrinker Ah, _those_ art teachers. A lot of art teachers are very traditionalist and some are against anime/manga. I myself believe started out in the traditional art path of realistic fruit and life studies and do encourage learning about them but I also think anime/manga is also art and disagree with your teacher's handling. Teachers can make or break a students love for any subject. I've had teachers that ruined my favourite subjects as well as teachers that made me fall in love with a subject I hated. Just because someone is knowledgeable in their field doesn't mean they'll be a good teacher as teaching is it's own skill. Pride alone is not good for teaching as in my opinion good teachers come from a place of love and learn to understand how the child learns not you. With pride the teacher isn't open to learn things from the childs point of view. I can relate to your tale, I was deemed a gifted child only to skip school an insane amount in middle school that caused me to fail a lot of subjects and then I was sent to a specialized school with a wonderful teacher that helped me to not skip school and coincidentally I became an overachiever (partially from lots of self studying.)
