@@THE1BELOWANDABOVEALL Agreed on both accounts. The first time I heard the Choir sing “under the bridge downtown” in the 90s, I got chills. Classic song. I think Jar or Flies is a perfect release in general. Very close to being my favorite project AiC ever made.

Man...Nostalgia indeed!!!I found a vhs tape of me as a teen skateboarding at our local skatepark here in Atlanta Georgia and this song was playing in the background!!!I broke down crying of happiness and my daughter wondered why.I simply told her that "in time you will understand"...then my baby replied "ok dad"....i can't wait until she feels what nostalgia is all about!!!This song means so very much to me and to my surprise...my daughter loves it!!One happy dad over here!!!

I was 14 when this album came out. My brother was the one who brought the music home. He would play random songs from AiC, STP, Pearl Jam, NIN all day long. I would sleep with this music playing during the day, and it would find its way into my dreams. I'm now 2 months away from 38, my brother served 12 years in the Air Force and passed away in 2014, mother died of a broken heart 2 days after valentines day in 2017 and every time I hear music of that time, of those years, I feel that any moment, I'm going to wake up from this nightmare of a life. To my brother and mom, still alive.

I might be in the minority here but jar of flies is my favorite album! I love that more stripped down, acoustic approach. Loved the older, heavy crunchy stuff too, don't get me wrong! but I just love jar of flies so much, and of course their MTV unplugged show... I still respect the hell out of Jerry Cantrell for continuing on, and he is in my opinion LARGELY overlooked and underrated as a musician, a singer, and a songwriter.. I respect him for keeping on, and that new singer is very talented, breathes new life into the band.. but damn it all I wish Layne would have gotten help, got his shit together, and LIVED!! kept making music... I didn't get into Alice in Chains until somewhat recently, as an adult. I was a kid in the early 90s. I remember something my dad said about when Kurt Cobain died. My dad was old school, not much of a rocker, more into old country like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and what not. Well when he saw nirvana's unplugged, Kurt's rendition of "in the pines" he was extremely impressed. And that's when he realized like okay this dude's legit. It's not just yelling and screaming and noise lol nirvana's unplugged made a believer out of my dad because he immediately recognized the artistry, the musicianship involved... He said something after Kurt died about damn just imagine how much great music he COULD have kept making, had he lived. My dad thought they might have CONTINUED that unplugged stripped down approach.. Well anyhow, talking about nirvana on an Alice in Chains video! Sorry lol I said all that to say THIS though: The way my dad felt about Kurt is kinda how I feel about Layne; I feel like if Layne had lived and they continued the band, Layne probably would have made more stuff similar to unplugged and jar of flies... Sad what happened to both those guys, RIP kurt and layne both ✌️✌️✌️

I was 16 in 1994 when this released and what a perfect age to be musically conscious. My dad played the old motown stuff, being raised on the classics like zeppelin, Jethro tull, Nazareth, the Beatles and stones, the who and having classic rock and motown on the radio growing up, then coming into my own music consciousness with Metallica, pantera, all those 80's bands and even the great voices of people like Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson on the radio, then BAM, the grunge movement out of Seattle hits and changes my life forever. Not to mention the Golden age of hip hop and RnB with 2pac, biggie and all the rest. I fear we may never see artists of today hit that kind of vein that bands like Alice in Chains did. But I'm happy i was a part of all this greatness. And I'll always be able to go back and listen with gratitude for what a profoundly inspired zenith of musical creativity it was.

Fun fact: the jar of flies is a representation of an experiment that is done with two jars of flies. One jar is overfed and the other is underfed; the overfed jar reproduces at an alarming rate and then overpopulates (creating shorter lifespans) while the underfed jar survives the longest. This music video and song embody everything about that experiment and the messaging behind stay away from the overindulgence and pressures from our social environments.

I also think Adam Jones from Tool is underrated, people mention him even less than Cantrell , and his riffs and rhythm playing is second to no one. He's a a technical beast in complexity, but he's not a shredder so no one talks about him

I was born in 1982 and it used to piss me off being told by younger people born say, 1988-94 that 90s music was sh*t because it glorified depression and suicide. Not to mention the fact that by the time these kids had the brain cells to develop a taste in music rock music consisted of nu/rap metal. I'm always glad to hear someone that appreciates 90s music. The experimentation, the dissonance, unpredictable chord changes, the wah pedal abuse, songs that were strongly riff based while still retaining depth and quality. It was great and I'm still discovering lesser-known 90s hard rock bands all the time

Jerry Cantrell!! 99% of the time when a rock group uses professional classical musicians for a recording (as AIC did for this song), everything has to be written out precisely for those musicians. Jerry gathered the musicians in a room with him and his acoustic guitar and played for them exactly what he wanted. And they'd work on it together. No sheet music or anything else. And the results are a testament to his ability.

From a time when the world seemed less scary and my hometown hadn't been destroyed by gang mentality and drugs. Before I knew what harsh reality was in store for me, and I flipped this on my walkman in the dark and hoped and dreamed big. Thank you AIC for making music that reminds me of who I truly am.

What strikes me about the music from this era (I was born in ‘80) is that it was so powerful. I don’t know if anyone remembers the random amazing music that appeared, but it seemed like the industry just pumped out the most incredible, wacky and inventive stuff. And it was all raw and pure, all driven by inspiration from other artists. Hour and hours spent playing in your bedroom, using your imagination. I fear our kids and grandkids are being robbed of this. Such an amazing time to be alive, I miss it

Incredibly tragic but the version of the song is the only one that exists. Alice in Chains didn't have the backing to take a string quartet on tour. So this song was never played live. What a tragedy.

A logical yet unexpected mark of progress for this band. A timeless, genre-defying masterpiece. The hauntingly weird yet familiar stop-action characters, especially Lane were rather obvious, yet mysterious enough to make this one if not THE most innovative videos of its time.
