Both C major sonatas on this album have been in Alice Sara Ott's repertoire since her early teens and she feels that recording them now is testimony to her regard for Beethoven and of her ability to present a personal and artistic statement of these works. Sonata op. 2 no. 3, written when Beethoven was in his mid-twenties, is full of youthful spirit, wit, and force. The "Waldstein" op. 53 was composed in his thirties when Beethoven was struggling with impending deafness. Additionally, Alice Sara Ott selected the fierce Rondo "Rage over a Lost Penny," dating from Sonata op. 2's time, and the beautiful Andante favori, originally written as the "Waldstein"'s slow movement. Watch Alice Sara Ott play the Adagio from Beethoven's Pianos Sonata op. 2 no. 3 in C major from her Beethoven album at Deutsche Grammophon.

ooohh.... i like her playing a lot. She is the master of the quiet notes - so much dynamics and expression into the most quiet piano.

It is a great joy to notice, how this young german lady combines her education an experiences from Germany with her gifts from asian Mother! Very interesting , deep felt interpretation of Beethoven! Thank You for this!

Japanese mother. Asia is a very big place and probably much more diverse in culture and language than Europe. The generalisation doesn't really work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asia#Political_geography You could have said "...education and experiences from Europe..." and it would have made more sense

dear Pvandick: Never been to Asia? It is not as diverse as Europe at all. This Asian gal owes all her well-fertilized talent to Germany and Germany's openness to different races and cultures.

I watched several times around 1.00 and for the life of me I can't detect anything at all happening. In general I can't help feeling that if this were an audio recording nine tenths of the comments on this site would not have been written. Let's face it, this is a very unremarkable artist who has promoted her career mostly on the basis of the secretions of testosterone her appearance seems to generate. Good luck to her, but let's not pretend it's anything else. To adapt Hugo von Hoffmannsthal, 'Untermächte sind im Spiel.'

A friend once told me that the hardest thing in the world is for a truly beautiful girl to grow into a complete, actualized adult woman - because it was just far too easy to get by on looks. That is not the case with Alice. But I take your point.

What the f+++||!! I thought that I was going to enjoy this, but ..... - - - suddenly it cut out - without finishing - to a Stravinsky piece. End result: I hate her for this sneaky advertising. And I don't think her playing is up to par with the greats although it is alright and the grand piano does come through nicely.

C'mon now. The classical music business is tough. Most great artists have a VERY hard time getting and holding audiences. Great performances are available on line for nothing. I think you are judgmental and unreasonable. Life in music is terribly difficult and highly competitive. In the US, classical music is almost dead. When I was a teen I could play all 5 Beethoven concertos. Would I go into MUSIC? Are you insane? I became a surgeon instead. When I lived in CA, in the Bay Area, there were at LEAST 100 people who could play all the major concertos within 50 miles of where I lived! Most were Asian and married to rich men. These kinds of overwrought, theatrical presentations of piano soloists are an insult to both music and filmmaking. If the directors of such would use discretion, apply such techniques lightly, perhaps it might be done to great effect. But this is like the kids' new toy, and they keep playing it over and over. I'll be glad when they grow past it, or grow up.

@alooshanotea2753
@alooshanotea2753 7 жыл бұрын
Maxim: several pianists do this on purpose. And orchestral musicians will play beautifully without the need of any facial expressions at all. Ever wondered why? They don't need it to convince their audience that the music is great. That is how you can recognize a 2nd class musician: how far they distort their faces and bodies while playing. Horowitz for example, never moved anything except his hands.

Well, she butchered it. And I'm not looking at the face. This is a bad rendition. No mystery to it, no slow ness. It's real telling most of the comments are concerning what her bone structure looks like. She's making mince out of it. I could do better and I'm not piano player.

I've played this work since I was 11. She plays it with a lot of sostenuto pedal. But it is CLEAR, clean and the phrases are carefully planned and executed. The tempo is perfect. It is a slow movement and meant to be lyrical. It is with her playing it. I think your criticism is.....well... wrong. I use less sustaining pedal. But that is only a personal choice. Perhaps I should use more. I tire of baseless criticisms of classical performances from PEOPLE who themselves cannot play the work they are criticizing. I can actually play this work. My opinion is meaningful. That is a fact. But you'll also note that I am not judgmental. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)
