"even in her own mind, she's not the main character. she's just existing." this is so powerful. Ellie is just so selfless and such a good portrayal of any Asian trying to get through life as someone who looks different than others around them, because of our heritage and culture too. i know i grew up "existing" too.

*One of the reasons why this movie made an impact to a lot of people, she made Ellie so relatable. It's not just being different but thinking that we are not the protagonist of our own story but this movie changed that perspective and gives the viewers hope.*

@Foodie_888
@Foodie_888 4 жыл бұрын
kemmy okolo Ellie used the bold stroke reference for Aster because she knew Aster was into art. The meaning behind her rhetorical question was asking Aster if she was happy with her current life (current painting) of dating a boy acording to how others saw how she should live it. Or if she was bold enough to make that "bold stroke" and go against society's perception and live her life the way she wants to live it (create a better painting metaphor). Ellie wrote that metaphor in one of the letters for the guy friend (whom asked Ellie to write love letters to Aster in exchange for money) to give to Aster. When Ellie quoted the words in church from the letter, Aster knew it was Ellie and that was why she was mad and slapped him. Aster was also disappointed with Ellie because she was not truthful about her feelings because she felt the same for Ellie. Aster was dating a guy to front the fact she liked girls.

I also saw ellie chu as someone who kind of pushes her feelings down because yea she sees herself as the side character but once she met paul she was able to kind of express her feelings to aster through him without any of the consequences of putting herself out there. Like she gets to tell aster things as paul that she would never actually tell aster herself and thats why my favorite scene of the movie is when paul and aster went on their second date at the restaurant.

I also don't believe a sequel is needed, but if there were one it'd be interesting to have "The Other Half of It" told from Aster's perspective, maybe retracing this story from her point of view or having the events occur after this movie, where she has to deal with her struggle with her family and religion's view on lgbtq etc. I think it would be very interesting.

There's a scene on church at the end...they make a reference to 1 Corinthians 13. It think this quote from the Bible is the most realistic depiction about love, not a "Disneyland" ending. If you really want to wait for love, you have to know that love is all this things. Basically accept the good and the bad.

By the end of the movie it feels like it’s the end of phase 1, the characters are branching off and getting ready to step foot into the real world, the next chapter of their lives. I think a sequel may defeat the purpose of the story, though. It was perfect to see such an open ending for a character that has boxed herself in her own world. And Ellie leaving Aster with a "see you in a couple years" is awesome because we can only then imagine if that ever does happen. (Though, if Alice does choose to do a sequel, I'm sure she'll knock it out of the park)

I find it interesting that Alice Wu's perspective on visually representing the text messages was that a motion tracked animated graphic would be less likely to date the film. In Bo Burnham's feature 8th Grade, he decided to film the literal phone screen rather than animating graphics because according to him it felt more authentic. Ironically I think Wu's approach dates the film just as much as showing the model of phone due to the fact that it's a pretty popular way to represent text messaging at the moment. I just find it interesting the reasoning behind each filmmakers approach to incorporating phones into the mise en scene.

Most people think they will be happy and "complete" when they find their "other half" but I tend to disagree. First of all, you are already "whole" and when you find that special someone, he/she will be able to "complement" or add more value to your existence. No one should ever feel they are broken or not complete unless they find someone. Self-actualization, self-love and self-affirmation has to be front and center with you before you try to find someone. When you are ready, your self confidence will give off an aura that will enable that someone to see you as a suitable partner. You are you and no one will be able to complete you. Once you are self-evolved you will walk through this life upright and you will not need people as crutches. Once you find that special someone, he/she will walk along beside and enable all the good qualities you already have to make them shine even more. Not all people you meet will help lift you up or make you shine even more because those are the downers in life. They want to pull you down to their level because they have low self-worth and can not make improvements on themselves. Leave them behind and make room for people that will complement you and help you succeed in all aspect of life.

alice wu and her team are truly masterminds. the love they all share for creating art and sending out a wholesome personal message is absolutely touching. adored and loved the movie!! thank you for creating something so lovely for teenagers to relate to (especially the people of colour and LGBT community). didn’t have such wholesome coming-of-age stories i could relate to when i was younger but i’m so glad others do now!!! once again, much love 💕
