We backpacked Longs for our 25th anniversary. Sunset at the Boulder field made the rock look like they were on fire. Longs was our first 14er back in 2006. This year we're celebrating 40th anniversary and we submitted 23 14ers so far. Keep on hiking.

When you are old and unable to climb someday, you'll be glad you made this video. It made me miss the days I used to go hiking. I can still do it, just live in an area that has nothing to do. Good job and be safe.

Wow. The fact that it’s a 14er, your first solo backpacking and it’s fifteen miles is very impressive. That is a huge accomplishment no joke. Too bad about the cell phone. I’m very, very jealous. Climbing a 14er in Colorado is something I would like to do one day. Congratulations Alice.

That was the best video of climbing Longs I've ever seen. It actually documented the whole hike and put everything in perspective.

Got this as one of my first climbs in the 70s. Boulder camping was not available so it was a very long day hike. Started before sunrise ended after dark. One of the best things I ever did.

Climbed Longs Peak in Aug 2005. 5 started the climb. 2 finished. I was 53 yrs old and it was a bucket list for me. Started from the parking lot at 0400 and back at 1800. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. And yes I had done many prep hikes in preparing for it. I admire your independence and adventurous spirit. Keep going!

When you video yourself hiking, you have to retrace your steps numerous times to retrieve the camera, so you did a little more walking than everyone else, great views!

Great video, what a gorgeoustwo days you had!. That was the scariest climb I've ever done. We started at 2:30am and finished around 5:30pm in pouring down rain. But I am so glad I did it!

Thank you for sharing. My friends and I did the same hike in one day, started our hike at midnight, reached the summit around noon. Scary and beautiful! On the way down, I almost fell near the trough and then we got caught in a storm after the Keyhole...rained, snowed, hailed, and lightning all around us. When you could feel your hair rising and falling with every lightning strike and at the edge of the Boulder field, you never realize how fast you can run across boulders. We later read that 14 hikers had to be rescued from that storm. I miss Longs. There is a quote that I’m paraphrasing “When people ask what it was like climbing a mountain, I could write a story, draw a picture, or write a song about it, but you’ll never understand it. You are on the outside looking in. You’ve got to experience it to actually understand it. “

I climbed Long’s Peak twice in the early 1970s . Back then, the National Park had cables installed on the mountain side past the Keyhole; the cables were several hundred yards in length and were placed very close to the edge of the vertical face on the east side of the Peak. Here the mountain side was very, very smooth. This placement provided a spectacular view of the mountain’s vertical face and the several 1000 foot drop. That was really terrifying!! I think the Park removed the cables because of the hazardous position for climbers. We then descended on the “backside” (west) of the mountain. Long’s was my favorite of all the Colorado 14ers. Your video was terrific. Thank you.

I live 45 miles east of this Magnificent Mountain, I can actually see it daily from my backyard. I've hiked it many times, and it is absolutely breathtaking from the top. I love this Hike, and I recommend it to all adventurous people. Be cautious and take necessary precautions to avoid mishaps. Such a major accomplishment when you reach the summit .

If you think you want to do it again start about 2am on a full moon. You want to summit before dawn. Sunrise is awesome and it's really cool to see the shadow of Long's to the west.

The best video on YT for hiking this trail. I'm an old guy of 65 and have spent a lot of time on the trails of Colorado and had to laugh when you asked"what the hell am I doing?" I have asked myself that same question many times, on many hikes. Great job young lady. You have a new subscriber!

My son his best friend graduate high school this year in Kansas and we plan on taking hopefully once a year hiking trips to Colorado to hit new trails each year

My grandpa was a professor in Fort Collins in the 60s/70s and he required all his doctoral students to hike Long’s Peak before he would pass them (of course they didn’t HAVE to but... it was encouraged)

Very nice. I’ve climbed it 3 times but many years ago. Brought back nice memories. It’s one the hardest 14’neers. You mentioned the distance but the elevation gain is huge too. 5000 ft. Beautiful weather. Always a little dicey in the summer. Surprised there weren’t a lot more people. Very popular hike. Well done

I’ve been to RMNP twice. My kids were too young to make this hike on my 1st visit. On my 2nd visit my travel partner didn’t want to make it. WANTED:New travel partner. Alice, you’re my new hero. Thank you for sharing this.

Having lived in Estes Park and worked across Hwy 7 from Longs Peak for 5 years, PLEASE, PLEASE, OH PLEASE DO NOT climb Longs Peak solo, ESPECIALLY if you are not an EXTREMELY experienced climber. 5 or 6 people die on Longs Peak each year due to weather or falls. A 10 Mountain Division squad had to be pulled off of Longs Peak by helicopter while I was there.

Definitely the most in-depth, picturesque and informative video of climbing Long's that I've seen. I climbed this behemoth in 2018. Such an amazing experience. Thank you so much for creating this. Well done!

I grew up in Leadville Co. I had the pleasure of climbing both Mt. Elbert (highest mountain in Colorado) and Mt. Massive. Both of which were right in my backyard. Between snowboarding, hiking, camping, hunting, Leadville was a fantastic place to grow up in.

Good for you, young lady, that was a treat for me, I climbed it about 45 years ago just once, a one day hike, but this is the first video I've watched of a climb and with the modern image stabilized HD/4K cameras, it's almost like being there again. It's a "must do" hike for anyone who lives in Colorado and is able to do it.

Most people that set out on this hike don't finish. It's grueling. Big props to carrying that pack the whole way!

Thanks for the memories! I have been to the top of Long’s Peak 3 times twice by the mountaineer route (Keiners) and the last time the keyhole route. I believe it was almost 25 years ago. I'm watching this from my sofa today. It was 1975, August that year when I and a group of young people about to enter college were comrades on the two day hike up to Longs Peak. I took hundred of photos with my dads 36 mm camera capturing many beautiful memories throughout the time we were in Colorado. Thanks for sharing and brining back to life some great memories. I climbed Longs Peak in 1987 when I Was in my 20's. It was the most challenging climb in my 40+ years of hiking and backpacking. I remember climbing through the "KeyHole" and holding onto a cable to cross the cliff edges to the summit.

My father grew up in site of Long's Peak on the front range. We hiked to Chasm Lake many summers in the 1960s. Unfortunately never made it to the summit. We caught trout in Peacock Pool and Chasm Lake. Great memories.

Totally relate to 'what the hell are you doing' thinking at 11:28.' The mind game of every solo climb is the worst part.

Congratulations! I hiked Longs with my son. Did the exact same journey. I lost my nerve 2 times but made it. The hike down was equally treacherous. Make it back to Boulder Field camp by 11. Off the mountain by mid afternoon in time for PM showers and a beer. BTY, there was ton's of people traffic on our hike. Though you did this by yourself, following the traffic helps a newbie.

Last time I was in Colorado was 1985. I never did a hike like that, but I did see a lot of the sights. I'm so glad these videos exist because at my age it ain't gonna happen. 😅

I did this hike in 2009! Thanks for bringing back so many good memories! Those open top outhouses at the Boulder field were kinda weird! I had the most difficulty getting by the huge bolder at the top of the trough, I believe it’s called the choke stone. It took me numerous attempts to get past that spot. Thanks!

I was born and grew up in Loveland. My oldest brother has climbed longs several times. I’m pretty sure it’s his favorite 14er. As commenters have said though it’s definitely not a hike that should be done alone.

For anyone wanting to climb Longs, it is not a good beginner peak. I made the climb in March as my 20th colorado 14er. I opted not to camp overnight and made the hike in one go. It took over 13 hours roundtrip.

You're my hero Alice. I can see Longs peak from my front yard and have always wondered what it would be like to climb it. Now I know. At 69 years old I'm not going to attempt such a thing but I can do it vicariously through you. So cool.

Wow, you did great! I’m terrified of heights and you had moments in the same spots as I did. There is a reason that the Park Rangers and SAR teams call this a climb and not a hike. You put a lot of work into this video and it shows. Good work all around!

Lovely hike, lovely lady. I spent many years growing up in the area of Longs Peak. Our cabin was just down the road from the Longs Peak trailhead. While I climbed some of the mountains in the Park, acute mountain sickness (aka severe altitude sickness) always made it painful. I never did try one of the 14ers because of this. My mountain adventures were generally hiking to and fishing in mountain streams, as well as hiking at lower altitudes. I loved listening to the wind in the aspen leaves, and smelling the forest after it rained. The area in which you hiked will always be my home.

Great climb. It is a beautiful mountain. Maybe just add some safety tips, especially Colorado afternoon thunderstorms. And I would have liked to see you wear a helmet. Rockfall on class 3 climbs or above, is not something you want to encounter. On a crowded mountain like Longs, people are always sending rocks down your way. Thanks for sharing and congrats.

In the 80’s I hiked this mountain. When I arrived at the trough there was an Amish women in a bonnet,ankle length blue floral dress ,and very sensible black shoes . Up until then I fancied myself a mountain climber.

I love hiking and have made progress on my fear of ledges but not sure I could bring myself to do that... Pretty sure I'd pass out first. Even watching you do it made me physically nervous. I really admire how brave you are and appreciate how well you captured the trail.

I have literally seen a marmot try to drag someone's backpack away in the boulder field. The backpack was more than he could handle and he only made it a couple feet.

Nicely done. So much so that I was clutching the couch as you ventured through the narrows.

Great job. I climbed Longs Peak when I was 19 and there was a cable installed above the Boulder Field with a direct route to summit, avoiding the Keyhole Route (we came down that way). A lightning storm appeared suddenly while on the cable route, a terrifying exerperience, but we made. They removed the cable two weeks after our climb for safety reasons. Again, great video. Thanks for posting.

Thank you for that Alice. I climbed Longs 42 years ago and didn't get past the narrows because it started to snow. I've always wondered what the rest of the climb was like. Now I know. I did hike to Chasm lake a few times to go fishing with a park ranger friend of mine. Even that hike is substantial. If you want a nice leisurely one day 14er try Grays and Torres.

I remember i got the base of the peak, totally unprepared, not dressed correctly, and also mid afternoon when the storms were passing through. I will go again in 2023 and conquer this peak now that i’ve done more research and hiking

My cabin is just a couple of miles from the trailhead. I’m nowhere near in your kind of shape so I really enjoyed seeing top vicariously. Air’s pretty thin at 14,000 plus feet. You did amazingly well, especially if you don’t live at high altitude to begin with.

I made the climb in 1979 at age 36 and later with my son in the 90's. The second time there was so much snow we were required to rent ice axes. We turned back in the trough that time as I did not want to try the ledge covered in snow. Enjoyed your video very much.

I love that you did it alone. 😮 I did it during the early a.m. hours into the daylight. But also coming down it downpoured the entire way down. Like several hours 😢 worst experience of my life going down, but the way up was amazing and so dangerous. Thank god I can tell the story today! Good for you 💪🙏🤘

Regarding her doing this alone. While she was on a solo trip, she was by no means "alone". There were lots of people all around her. Long's is a VERY busy trail.

I was a student at CSU when I climbed Longs Peak with some classmates in the summer of 1977. I am 66 now and this video brought back everything! No cell phones then, but the Boulder field, keyhole, Agnes Vaille hut, the trough, the “bulls-eyes”, the devils harp, the narrows, the homestretch, the palisades, etc. Thank you so much!!

Excellent video. Sorry about losing your phone. I did this climb with friends in the 1980s, back when my Herman Survivor boots weighed more than a pound on each foot. We did not stay overnight but did the hike in one day from the ranger station using the keyhole route. I was not in good condition and it took almost 15 hours in August. Starting at about 4 AM, I wished I had a flashlight for the hike in the forests below. Lots of exposed tree roots to trip over. We scrambled the boulder field and had lunch at the keyhole. We had an excellent experience at the trough as the vistas opened up. The narrows were a bit dicey and we made it to the top. Hope you signed the log book. I was hoping to do it all again with my son but learned that with my heart, I now have trouble breathing at 11,000 feet. Probably not an option any more. Glad you made it.

Girl, hats off to you!!! I just did my 10th 14er here in CO and it was Torrey's via the Kelso ridge (also class 3 ). I completely identify with the way you were feeling up there. There were so many times I wanted to turn around, but you can't, it's a one way route, and I really wanted to conquer the fear. After 3 hours, I summitted prouder of myself than I have ever been. Good for you for getting Long's, the final stretch terrifies me, you crushed it!!

Thanks for sharing your story. I also claimed longs peak a few times doing the key hole route, back in the 80's. There is also an awesome route going the opposite direction @ the fork going to longs lake. You go to the forest ranger shack, & go left & follow a mountain section called ship's prow. You follow that to it's end & then go up a rock scree to the ridge right by Mt. Lady Washington. You then head right to Longs Peak, & follow red arrows & come up to what's called the home stretch. Then the last leg is about 200 yards to the top. This saves about 1 1/2 miles, & is also most beautiful hike. 😀
