Prince composed and arranged this . He sings with a falsetto voice so he must have known it was made for a woman.Years later Alicia asked to cover it . When Prince heard her version, he called her , and said the song now belongs to her , which is the biggest compliment he could pay her !!

I would like to give additional data to your comment. Prince didn't called Alicia, it was her to call Prince to ask for permission to sing his song because he didn't allow others to sing his songs. Prince told her that he had being watching her and was ok with her singing it. This story was told by Alicia at one of her concerts where she played the song after he died. The way she tells the story is very cute, you should google it.

Alicia is the artist that connected old school and modern music for me personally when I was in my late teens and just couldn't find current music that would reflect what I had always loved. And so here she is singing Prince's song. Perfect. Her original music does that too. Prince didn't "rock this so hard", he actually sang it quite softly in a piano driven, falsetto vocal. All three artists performed the song well and I enjoy all of them regularly. Prince gets most of the credit since it is HIS song first and foremost. Stephanie Mills simply has the best vocal ability of the 3 singers in question and that comes through in her version of this song. As good and original as Prince and Keys are, neither of them could possibly out-sing Stephanie Mills.

Prince wrote music for a plethora of other artists under pseudonyms, amongst which: Sheena Easton, Shiela E, The Time, Alicia Keys, Sinead O'Connor, Chaka Khan, Paula Abdul... and then some. I hope they will honor him for it at his funeral.

To this day I love this version more as opposed to the studio version. She does incredible doing it live too. Forever a Alicia Keys fan for life ever since she dropped her first album which was a true foundation coming up during my junior year in high school. Man, I gotta lol when I see all these comments like "it's Prince", "Prince's version is better" etc. Y'all don't get Prince, or the Purple Experience. It's Prince, AND it's Alicia Keys too. The Purple One has written almost as many songs for other people as he has for himself, created entire bands and their setlists... I was going for the Prince version, however Prince ain't available. Alicia Keys has the closest version to what I was looking for.so now that she is jamming, "I want to know why you don't call me like you used to?
