Alien is one of those movies u dont get upset over having to buy another upgraded copy. I.e. vhs, dvd, bluray, digital, 4k...

Classic flick - maybe one day we'll get Aliens on 4K

Late to the Party, but this 4K title on an OLED is stunning. I've had Alien on every format from VHS, & know it inside out, but still there are things you can see that were not obvious before. And just like titles such as "Dunkirk", it doesn't need Atmos really as the mix is so perfect. Oh, & watching a dark Atmospheric Movie like this in the Daylight? Come on!!!

Alien is and has always been my favourite movie. I had the good luck to meet John Hurt on 3 different occasions. A total gentleman, good fun. A great loss to the acting world. Thank you for your very informative and refreshing style of review. Keep it up.

Just watched Alien last night and it still surprises me every time I watch it. The effects of the movie hold up so well it astounds me. The effects of the movie are better than some movies in it’s own franchise and some movies today( I’m looking at you dc) and it’s was made 40 years ago! Crazy

You lost me when you said QLED is very similar to OLED. that is just wrong.

FYI your QLED isn't like an OLED. QLED is still an LCD with all the shortcomings of an LCD. QLED is just an LCD with a better backlight.

I agree the older movies are much more better than these newer movies that they are all coming out with and I Love Alien it is a Classic

Q LED and OLED are nothing alike, from a technology standpoint or a quality standpoint. And the only things that determine the quality of a 4K transfer, is the actual grain of the film used, and the quality of the actual film scan. Film doesn't contain "data", or have a resolution, and certain grains of film are significantly less detailed than footage shot at higher resolutions.

Just got this and was amazed at the transfer in 4K. Details are very good as is the color. Flesh tones are way better. Sigourney looks amazing in the final scenes. It is a very dark movie which adds to the spookiness feel. I have a 55" Samsung curved 4K TV and the movie looks great.

My favorite horror series Alien, and Halloween. Will have to get the 40th Anniversary for my collection.

It will be a Black Friday deal for sure, but $15 is killer for a day one 4k price. I'm sure the audio upgrade was limited by the source. They might have tried to do something with it but weren't pleased with the result (would be my guess)

U know what would be an incredible 4K? Interstellar!!! That movie is incredible......I can only imagine how awesome it is on 4K.... I have it on Blu ray and its stunning

Anyone know the release date for the anthology 4k and whether it is all taken from the original film rather than upscaled?

When you downscale to fit 4k disc's, it depends on what film they used to record the movie with. If we are talking about 70mm only then yes, it is scaled down to 4k, but if we are talking about 35mm film which a lot of movies are shot with including 1979 alien then it is equivalent to 4k. So basically the movie you are holding in your hand is about the same resolution as the film they shot the movie with. It's crazy to think about it when you think how long we have come when it comes to home cinema, no one would have thought that decades ago.

Aliens('86) in 4K with a 3D version would be a definite purchase for me.

One of the better transfers I’ve gotten. I still think fury road looks the best out of every 4K movie I have . That huge explosion at the end is amazing

Nice review I have had this on video and DVD but had to get 4k version and wow when Dallas goes for a chat with Mother there is writing by all the little bulbs I have never seen before and so many other small details that just jump out. If you are a fan well worth the £20 UK.

Thanks Jeff!! Does anyone know if any of the studios will try to go back and add atmos tracks to some of these classic movie 4K releases? AFTER WE ALL BUY "REGULAR 4K" releases!! Causing us (once more ) to need to upgrade our video library. I think Im gonna hold-up on some of these classic releases till a "NEW 7.1 + ATMOS TRACK" becomes the standard... otherwise they are not really a double dip friendly experience!

I really don't get the complaint with the audio. A 5.1 DTS-MA soundtrack is great. Most people don't have anything more than that. Heck most people today are listening on sound bars rather than true surround sound setups anyway. To ask a movie from 1979 to have a 7.1 or Atmos soundtracks seems a little much. Most movies from that era are at best stereo soundtracks to begin with and some like Alien has 4 channel audio. So anything more than that is not true to the original anyway. 5.1 is as close to the original 4 channel as you can get without being 4 channel. I mean I get it that on some level these older movies are being constantly updated (see Star Wars), but the more that happens the less of the original release is seen. Suddenly it's not the same experience people had in the 1970s when first seeing these films. And isn't the entire point of the higher quality home video formats to make the difference between theatrical and home release nearly indistinguishable?

Great movie:) Never ever considered it a horror film though... Just sci fi. Even as a kid in the late 70s. Will definitely get the 4k despite not having an audio upgrade.

I thought it looked great because movies with dark scenes benefit from HDR and I was so impressed I ordered the steelbook also game of thrones last Sunday night could have used some HDR!

For anyone who's a collector of collector editions or special editions, theres a giant box that you can buy with this movie, has the theatrical version and directors cut, comes with collectible cards and other goodies.

Hate to nitpick, but QLED is certainly *not* very similar to OLED. 😀

I have the same TV and I use the XBox One S as my all in one dvd player. I have the standard Alien Quadrilogy dvd box set and I thought the quality of the standard dvd version of Alien on the QLED TV was fantastic.

I love clear audio but I don’t really care about the modern surround stuff. I still use an old marantz sr7500 for my surround sound. I’ve had it since like 2006 and still love it. It has Dolby and dts 7.1 with no hdmi pass through but I’m fine with using audio optical cables

Taxi Driver is on 4k UHD Blu-ray? Did I miss something? When did that come out? Or are you referring to the 'Mastered in 4k' 1080p blu-ray?

I like to escape into movies, so the more real the better. And repeat viewings can give new insights. Great channel btw.

My fave horror movie! I'm a fan of this movie and the franchise, but I hate how they change the artwork. I wish a future re-release at least keeps the regular "Egg" cover underneath a new slip cover, similar to the "Robocop 4k" disc.

I wonder if in this release they removed the frames where the electrician is seen wafting smoke into the corridor with a cigarette in his mouth as Sigourney runs past with Jonesy the cat? I must have seen that film 100 times and never spotted it until Sir Ridley pointed it out none of his Q & A sessions. This was my favourite movie until Prometheus came out, and I don't care if you hate me, but I love that just as much though I still tell myself we are yet to see a living 'Engineer'. Those tall grey guys are merely wearing suits in their image... In my head anyway. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻

It looks fabulous on an OLED! I'm disappointed they didn't achieve this level of excellence with Blade Runner. BR looks like a snowstorm (grain) in half of the scenes next to Alien.

I won't be upgrading unless I get a whole set of the movies on 4k which we will see if they even release a 4k box set

The original package for the 4 Alien movies was called 'Alien Quadrilogy" 😁 It had 9 DVDs. When the Blu ray came they called it Alien Anthology.

I wonder if they didn't upgrade the audio because they put both theatrical and directors cuts on the 4K disc.

Alien broke cinematic ground being the first sci-fi/horror film. So well done with a wonderful screenplay, detailed sets, terrific cast and a superbly designed alien creature. Combined with a texture and visual element imagined by Ridley Scott this film is a classic. Love the film score and H. R. Giger's contributions to this film.

I bought the dvd at the supermarket last year for £5 solely because of that cover. It included a pack of postcards showing alternate movie poster art. Disappointing that your 4k edition didn't at least include that. Enjoying your videos, keep up the good work!

I like your content and purist approach to appreciate cinema. What is your TV size and projector screen size to enjoy 1080p or 4K to the fullest. I personally prefer Sony panel over Samsung as I used to be a Panny Plasma True cinema mode guy. I have great 65” 4K Panasonic TV with XBox one to play or stream 4K content but only issue is that it’s not bright enough to pop out some images and here Sony full array LED takes the cake which I think can boosts upto 1000 nits of brightness to enjoy HDR & Dolby vision especially CGI heavy modern stuff. I like that you try to go analogue 70 MM when recommending old 4K titles and by watching them on projector. I rented Vertigo 4K print from Apple TV and yes there is a big difference how it looks now. Though 4K disc is better than streaming I know. I would like to hear from you the quality of Lawrence of Arabia 4K title also which I own but has not seen yet due to my panel limitations. 4K discs are expensive in India but I will definitely get the 2001… 4K copy now. It’s good that directors like Nolan are pushing film print advantages today. Sukhpreet India

so color grade not so reddddish...? and the restoration, is it pristine?, no dirt specks, smudges, etc? my 4k alien shipping from amazon usa.

Regarding what you said about old films on 4K, I bought Close Encounters of the Third Kind on 4K, really looking forward to a visual feast, but damn.. That was honestly the worst picture I'd ever seen! Terrible, terrible transfer.

Did you get scarface on 4k yet? It's on amazon for $14 right now. What is your opinion? I have several versions of scarface and a special version with a bullet count on it.

Looks good on OLED... I have both LG OLED, and Samsung's new QLED... and I got a say, with this film, 4K on Samsung's QLED is beyond incredible....the picture is INSANE! Well the QLED is one year newer than my OLED LG.. and cost me close to 7K..... so I was hoping it did look as good as it did. This movie is deff worth it on 4K on either TV

my disc's look different one is clear and i think my 4k theatrical cut is clear with black tekst and my directors cut is black with an alien on it ? can annyone tell me what release i have the french version the uk version german version idk i dont have that knowlegde.

I feel sad you guys cant get Panasonic TV's in the US that is such a strange marketing tactic. My Panasonic OLED is THX certified and has a THX bright room mode which makes it perfectly useable with superb picture on bright days.

Alien in 4k wasnt really a wow factor for me like say Pacific Rim but we're talking about a 1979 film so do old films benefit from 4k?

Teal and orange ughh. But grain is a MUST to keep the quality and detail from a movie shot on film. Removing that (like Disney does) ruins the movie.
