To further elaborate on this. Early scripts of the Movie explain that Jesus was taken to the Engineers. They talk him how to value life, peace and a perfect world. Engineers created humans, gave them Fire and their "Eden/Earth". Jesus was sent back to deliver his message of peace to get humans to give up their violent ways. But some of the humans killed Jesus for his message of Peace. This gave the Engineers the final reason to give up on the humans and try to eliminate them.

The Engineers see in us all the bad things they see in themselves. Just like humans fear what robots & AI might do to us should they choose to be our enemy, it would make sense that the Engineers fear what humans would do if we got so ambitious as to want to destroy our very Makers.

That’s funny. The Control Freaks of the world see robots and AI as a way to control and separate out a part of the populace as slaves. They have no compunctions against doing such things. Flash forward to the present from when you posted, and you’ll find that the Control Freaks that currently hold power in the United States honestly think they can win a nuclear world war by destroying their own country, and everyone that could possibly protect them. The Engineers don’t have to worry about eradication of humans, the humans are doing it for them. Musk was born a decade too late.

As to robots fear and concern are two different things. Fear is selfish while concern is selfless. There is a legitimate concern about AI - it can be programmed to have no moral conscience to be harmless to living beings and even if such restraint was programmed into them it could be tampered with as demonstrated in the original alien movie. The bad things in humanity are only demonstrated for drama/sensationalism and/or to influence the concepts of bad behaviors to those easily influenced who suffer lack of self restraint.

It is stunning how the story is similar to ancient sumerian writings about the Annunaki. I think even the engineer's appearance is borrowed from the description of these old gods - pale skin, giant muscular body, immense strength and agility and superior intelligence.

well, Ridley Scott stated that the eggs in the first alien movie were weapons to be used against "an ancient foe". And if you take into account the AVP movies, you see some events to support that. OK here is my theory: engineers create humans, then humans meet the predators. Predators taught humans how to build pyramids and stuff. Engineers get mad at humans for establishing a relationship with the predators( predators used to hunt engineers long before human race, that's why they created the xenomorphs so they could fight predators). Engineers decide to wipe human race.

The xenomorphs look the way they do because they grow inside humans, the neomorph from Prometheus is not a less evolved version of the xenomorph but a different varient that looks different because they grew inside an engineer by that big tentacle thingy... So its very possible that the xenomorphs exist because of past interactions with humans.

i have to point out that the trilobite (the giant face-hugger) in prometheus was birthed from a human, *_and then_* grew the deacon inside the engineer-- something that has never happened before so i think it's safe to assume that the deacon was just a one time deal. with that being said, you can see how it's not as simple as you are saying. the truth is we don't yet know how the small traditional face-huggers are created, but we will in this up-coming film. we will just have to wait and see. until then, this is all just speculation. but i do truly feel that the next film will confirm that xenomorphs have yet to be created at the time of AVP, making those movie none-canon.

I often thought that the Engineers we meet in Prometheus are members of a splinter group or faction that are possibly jealous or hateful towards us humans and see us as an eventual threat. It isn't crucial, but would be nice if Ridley Scott could tie the alien xenomorphs into the story more concretely. By that I mean to say that it's been established that the Predators created the xenomorphs and hunt them for sport. Now we're being told that the Engineers created them as a bio-weapon.hmmmm. more plot inconsistencies. love ALL the movies and books no matter what. Thanks for posting you do a great job!

I always thought that the xenomorphs were created as a bioweapon against the species featured in the "Predator" movies, which is why i've always thought there was an ancient rivalry between the species. Because of that I've anticipated a movie where the Engineers, Xenomorphs, Predators and of course Elizabeth Shaw duke it out in the ultimate scifi battle. And of course Shaw wins because Luke comes out of nowhere and throws her a light saber and the rest is history. yeah.

I find it extremely unlikely that a species which engineered the xenomorph and other biological weapons would have been so concerned that we "live in peace" and be disappointed enough that we didn't to wipe us out as you suggest.

Actually There is the earlier script draft that explains very well that they were indeed concerned about us. They didnt engineer the xenomorph doe. That was David. engineers lived for 100 000 years and more. Something happened and they lost the ability to reporduce. They found a creature who looked like a facehugger and it impregnated one of the Engineers and he gave birth to the Deacon. The Deacon Had simmilar shape to the well known Xenomorph but unlike the Xenomorph- this creature was good and kind and the engineers saw it as their God. They learned that the only way they can reporduce is by drinking the Deacon's blood and this is how they were hoping to survive and reporduce. This is how the Engineers hoped to preserve their kind. So they perfomed these experiments on many planets seeding them with life and many of these planters have been failures. Earth and humanity was one of the few planets where beings simmilar to engineers developed. They took special pleasure and care to teach us how to make tools and Humanity worshiped them. Then they saw the bad side of humanity. The anger and violent nature and deemed humanity a failure. They took a child from Earth to teach him the ways of the Englineers and they sent the human child back on Earth in hopes that the child will turn humanity on a better path. Sadly humanity Crucified the Child so they gave up. Their God, the creature called Deacon died and they used all of its blood to create new worlds. They ran out of blood. The black Goo is basically the engineers' uncussessful attempts to recreate the blood of the Deacon. Instead they realized the black goo is the opposite of the blood of the deacon. They weaponized it and even used it to make lots of things- like the ships and their biosuits.

Very interesting story unfortunately in the movie it was difficult to allude to that conclusion .you do see the deacon murial which the engineers worshipped in the worship chamber , and the table with the green glass jewel when touched by the engineers would expose the body of the first deacon alien . The murial at the top of the chamber shows one of the engineers transformed into the new being with the deacons blood and sb engineer holding it down with his hand

The entire franchise has always revolved around the realization of a perfect being. David is the latest entry, and although he failed the engineer's preliminary test, he proved to be the superior being in the end. It's David who will carry on the work.

Also there is a Theory that the Engineers were experimenting on Xenos or some other species like that. (The Xenos are like a parasitic species a lot like the Flood.) The Forerunners experimented and studied the Flood for a while and we're forced to use the Halo rings killing almost every single Forerunner making them practicality extinct.

I came to the same conclusion too (almost). The engineers did not want us to master space travel- thus infecting the universe with humans (and maintaining the engineer's superiority throughout the universe), so they came to earth at different times throughout humanity and left the star maps. When we mastered space travel, we'd follow the star maps to LV223 and they would kill us & contain us on earth. Otherwise, they would have just killed humans when they visited earth instead of leaving the star maps. When the Engineer learned of Weyland's intention of finding immortality, he set off to Earth to destroy us. IMO

I would say that Peter Wayland said the wrong things to the engineer when saying we are equal to gods. This pissed the engineer off in which caused him to get violent. I would have at least try to reason with the engineer by being humble and tell him the reason for coming here due to us being explorers and like to learn new things, and you guys have a lot you could teach us. Also, I would told the engineer about the star charts you guys left on earth many years ago, and that's how we found this place. Note: The conversation between Peter Wayland and the engineer was deleted from the original film. However, to create a good movie, drama has to be in it due to drama is what sells.

I don't know why they cut out the part of where the engineer talks. The engineer should have voiced his displeasure about Saul and claiming to be a god. He should have said you are no God, I am no God. You will die one day as one day I will die. Then Wayland can say but you created us!!! Much like I created David the android!!!! You can make us immortal. Then the engineer says immortal? Grabs David rips off his head. Then grabs Wayland and says here is your immortality. Breaks his neck. That would be cool.

Being a sci-fi fan, my first thought was that this encounter was a lesson in how *not* to conduct a First Contact. Think about everything it took for humans to make the trip to LV 223. Our Engineer knows this, and his initial body language says "Well, you finally made it". Kinda like the Last Knight in Last Crusade. But instead of maybe bringing the guy breakfast, or even giving him a few minutes to get his bearings, Weyland starts making demands. Then, Shaw starts (since he doesn't understand English) yammering and the guy just goes off and starts killing everyone. When he killed Ford, who was not a threat, that's when I stopped caring about the story. But Karma is truly universal, and when he became Trilobite fodder he got what he deserved. He had plenty of time to settle down but decided instead to go all Incredible Hulk on Shaw. They needed that 400 pound plus guy who just lifted 1100 pounds for a bodyguard.

@@TheFailedmessiah I think your interpretation is spot on. This is the impression that I got from that deleted scene when I watched it. I think it’s a crucial scene and without it the movie loses its allegorical edge. Even without the specific biblical references of Saul, etc, which are amazingly interesting, the core of that idea seems apparent. Weyland is a spoiled arrogant child, dangerous and whose works (David) will destroy worlds. Covenant ties that up nicely in my opinion.

ì go with the theory that there are 2 factions of engineers, one who wants to create life as depicted on the beginning of prometheus, wearing robes and none of that hitech armor, and the opposite faction who maybe sees this action of creating life as horrible and disgusting and decide to wipe out all of those experiments, one planet at a time.

The script for Prometheus has the dialogue from the awakening engineer translated since in the film the choice was made to not include subtitles when the engineer speaks. It's made clear in the script that Jesus was not an engineer but a human that they took back to their homeworld to "enlighten" and teach the meaning of life.

well there's people out there who think that city was another creation of the Engineers. Personally i think the Engineers have fallen on some hard times. Despite that mission going going wrong for them as shown in Prometheus, their planet stored with ships and bio-weapons was still left completely abandoned for years. Add to the fact David wiping out the city and getting zero response from the Engineers over the course of 10 years.

I watched the film twice and got none of the information provided here. The film does not provide a coherent plot/story. While I find all of this interpretation to be interesting, I don't see any of it supported by the film itself. The film is obviously stunning visually but suffers tremendously by being so oblique. Ridley may have expected too much from his audience, i.e., that the mostly visual film would be self-interpreting. It isn't. Over the years I've read hundreds of sci-fi novels and watched almost everything in the genre ever put to film, and I feel sufficiently educated to connect the dots in even the most sketchy of plot lines. Story-wise, I got almost nothing from "Prometheus," which really disappointed me. Because the film is either just badly made or purposely obscure, it has generated a tremendous amount of theorizing. I think this video takes the cake for generating meaning out of nothing. Show me where in the film that the Engineers sent Jesus to Earth. That alone is a whopper of pure invention. I don't buy it. My personal opinion is that someone other than Ridley should have watched the final cut then told him that the "story" didn't make any sense.

Thor Odinson It isn't said in the film but it can be inferred. It was said that the Engineers wanted to wipe us out for a reason 2000 years ago. And what's the only truely major thing that happened that time ago? The birth and death of Jesus Christ. So it can be inferred that the Engineers had something to do with Jesus (him being an alien, him being a hybrid of humans and engineers since engineers are known for bioengineering, or they taught him to spread the word around). But after seeing humans condemn and crucify him it was the last straw for the Engineers so they went to go wipe out the humans (judgment day). But then something happened and they weren't able to make it.

The key word in your comment is "inferred." This is one of my major complaints. I'm not saying you are wrong or right but merely there is too much to be inferred by the film to make it coherent and compelling. But, let's take a step backward. The Engineers seem divided among themselves (if you accept the inferences presented by various other posts.) If that is true, if that is correct, how/why would the Engineers deem it necessary to obliterate mankind when their own species is not exactly at peace and are devising ways that may not just promulgate life but obliterate it? Morally, the Engineers seem even less advanced than ourselves, playing with biological weapons that easily threaten their own existence. If some group of the Engineers are so crazy as to forfeit their own species with the hope (what else could it be called) that their biological experiments "might" rise to a species with more enduring qualities (albeit with even less consciousness), then they simply have no regard for the advancement of sentience.

I'm not sure why, but Prometheus really touched me in a way that very few movies do! I watch it over & over again, cos it really asks a lot of questions, yet leaves so many of them unanswered...which is very true to life! I think Dr. Shaw (played so well by Noomi) was such a brilliant character, she was genuinely looking for answers & pursued them despite all the dangers...whereas other characters in the alien movies just happened to find themselves involved inadvertently...& then have to survive! whereas Dr. Shaw carried on following it after all that, when others just wanted to get as far away as possible, & blow it all up! such a shame the new movie alien: covenant doesn't follow her story anymore, cos i would luv to see it! but as for the Engineers, they don't hate humans! i think they have almost a collective mind, where when one of them is given a task, they follow it out completely without question! as with the opening scene where one of them sacrifices themselves to seed a planet! ...ask a human to sacrifice themselves in order to support life, & we'd probably say get f**ked! & this is where the divide starts! the engineers r implicitly selfless, whereas we r implicitly selfish, they're willing to sacrifice themselves to propagate life, whereas we're willing to sacrifice everything in order to keep ourselves alive! that's the point of the story! so unfortunately, when old Mr Weyland rocks up asking for the secret to eternal life (u couldn't find a worse person to make first contact) ...it's such an abhorrent notion to the sole engineer that has survived that he rips davids head off, tries to kill everyone & is galvanized to carry out his mission to destroy us because all we've shown in that moment is just exactly what they're so against! it's not a malevolent act, at least in their regard, it's an act that means they're protecting something from us, which if they've been around for so long, makes me think they might know better...& perhaps we should be gone! ...but the switch up is, if Dr Shaw got to make first contact, who's a person that's intelligent, sincere and selfless, perhaps the engineer might have not acted that way! & that's the whole drive of the movie...it's mentioned numerous times, that they're only there under the funding & control of Weyland Corp, it's money & selfish power overcoming the a natural urge to find answers to why we're here! It's actually an incredibly sad movie & holds a mirror up to humanity in saying who r we, what r we doing & why do we behave the way we do? it's a marvelous concept & i think they really nailed it in this movie! x

After just watching Prometheus for the first time and looking through all of the possible theories, this sounds the best and makes the most sense imo. This theory makes sense also because in the alternate ending, when Peter Weyland tells the engineer that he wants to live forever, the engineer then says why do you want that which you hit the nail right on the head with this.

that's bullshit claim, go back to high school, there is shit ton of people throughout the history that willingly sacrificed themselves for a greater good. Prometheus was super pretentious movie about everyone being idiots and the whole plot only exists because of this. And don't bring this "morals" crap, that's deep only if you are 12 or something. Prometheus is a fun movie to watch, sure, but saying it's something smart and deep is a massive overstatement. It's laughably dumb movie (not as dumb as Covenant tho).

It's one of those rare movies that doesn't wrap up all the loose ends...it leaves you asking questions...which is what movies should do! It expands your mind a little! It is just a movie though, so lets not get too passionate or argumentative about it! It's science fiction...it's fiction! but it pulls us out of our minds for an hour or 2 and asks the bigger questions that we then ask ourselves! I wrote that comment 3 years ago, I'd forgotten I had, but the movie still fascinates me! I watched it again last week, and I still feel regretful Dr Shaw's pursuit of the truth or asking the question "why" wasn't followed through! ...but oh well, dosvedanya! And Coma thanks for reading through and responding! You must like the movie a bit, or you wouldn't be looking at this! I guess people shouldn't be called dumb for suspending disbelief and really getting into it, we have active imaginations and empathy for the story and the characters...high qualities to maintain I think as you get older! But I do agree with you, it was pretentious, it was reaching for a pie in the sky...and the most intelligent and highly trained professional characters did end up being idiots and were killed off in the most stupid ways! lol! There is a notion from a some great scientist/psychologist (I've been bloody googling it, but can't find it) that says, I'm paraphrasing here, when faced with contact to extra-terrestrial life, the basic human response will be of absolute abject terror! So I suppose we can understand the highly trained ppl and professionals on that mission losing their marbles a wee bit when confronted with that! lol! ...and yes, Covenant was SO extraordinarily disappointing! Agreed! Which one of the Alien series is your favourite though? Sigourney grounds the whole thing for me...and you can't beat the original, it's still so surprising watching it today even! You’re missing an important point - Shaw traveled the Earth and found many examples of the star map. Therefore - the path back to Lv 223 was intentionally provided to humans as a way for the Engineers to know when one of their experiment planets (there must be many) goes awry and must be destroyed. It’s a fail safe - that tells the Engineers that they should drop the pods.

I think there are 2 distinct factions to the Engineers. You have the Space Jockey types who are very militaristic, somewhat born out by the actions of the one awoken in Prometheus, and you have the Religious types. I believe these are the ones you saw at the beginning of Prometheus. Their actions and dress were very ceremonial, looking very much like Monks. I believe this group created the human race in what they saw as an attempt to create something better than themselves, a next step in their evolution, which on the surface seems somewhat obsurd since they appear to be superior to us in every way. Maybe there were limitations in their race they felt we would not suffer from. I believe the Space Jockeys were not entirely on board with this idea and eventually a civil war broke out, with the Jockeys attempting to defeat the Monks and destroy the human race. One side or the other weaponized the "goo", lost control, and ending up destroying their species. I think this is why the Prometheus Engineer was so violent to the humans, since he viewed them as a threat to his species and it was his mission to destroy them in the first place.

My theory: Basic, simple life forms are common, advanced complex, intelligent life forms are not. The Engineers have decided that based on their genetic template they will spread intelligent life throughout the universe. A noble cause for such an advanced civilization who are basically immortal barring any physical damage great enough to kill them. This ideal, however, is not shared by all the in their culture and there is at least another faction who's bent on undoing the intelligent life seeding process agenda that is being promoted by the majority. Thus the base, the xenomorph bio weapons which happened to escape, kill just about all The Engineers at the base, (Save the one in hypersleep and the one who escaped on a ship). Earth was a target of this faction all along but the break out of the bioweapon at the base put an end to that.

I basically agree with you. What "Prometheus" did was to introduce another race of aliens hell-bent on destroying Earth people, namely The Engineers. To me, this is a very cool and interesting expansion of the franchise's universe. I really hope we see more of The Engineers in upcoming movies.

Lots (but not all) of Sci-Fi fans wanted AVP to happen but Hollywood fumbled the bag with Requiem. Think back to Predator 2 when there’s a xenomorph skull in the Predator’s ship, that moment joins the two universes into one like it or not. The xenomorphs should of just been an ancient alien species that was both utilized by Engineers and Predators within the same universe; used by engineers to destroy planet life, and used by predators for hunting.

Here is a theory. Have you noticed that the Engineer that sacrificed himself in the prologue of the movie looks exactly like the one Wayland encountered in the juggernaut in prometheus? We know that the engineers seeded their DNA on earth which lead the eventual evolution of humanity. Humanity evolved to a point where we in turn created artificial life, androids. What if the engineers had first created artificial life. These artificial engineers would resemble the organic natural ones much like how David resembles a human. What if the artificial engineers, the ones in the biosuits with Gigeresque tubes and such, rebelled against their creators? And by doing this the Engineers decided to evolve natural creations instead of artificial ones. These Engineers shepherded mankind and invited them to eventually join them. But the artificial engineers, decided to destroy any life created by the natural engineers set our to eradicate humanity out of spite to their creators seeing them as their replacement. This is where we see the two factions of engineers. The creator natural ones and the destroyer artificial ones. And what if the artificial ones decided to try and spawn their own type of natural evolution which resulted in the xenomorph which they see as the pinnacle of artificial engineer evolution and worship as a god.

Here is my theory and it is partially based on mythology. Prometheus is a very cleaver Titan, presented as challenger to Zeus omnipotence (in mythology). According to the myths it is father of mankind. Lets adopt the story to the film. Lets say that on the first scene we have "Engineer" (Prometheus) abandoned on the remote planet as a punishment for his rebellion against other "Engineers" (Titans) or particular authority (Zeus in mythology). What was his guilt? He was able to create intelligent life forms. Other Titans did not like that fearing that one day, his creatures will challenge their rule over the universe. They saw him as dangerous, but they did not kill him, just left to the lonely planed on the edge of galaxy without any technological resources he normally possessed. He decided that the best way to create intelligent entity will be spreading copy of himself. He tricked others and kept a developed potion which allow spreading his DNA code. He started evolution process on the earth which created mankind finally. Titans figured out that something is going wrong on that lonely planet after some time and found intelligent form of live there. Not all of them wanted eradicated humans from the beginning, some of them did contact humans and observe them. They figure out that humans were created the same way as them, which pointed direct involvement of Prometheus (Engineer in first scene). Titans decided to destroy humanity as a potential threat.

Alien was always best when things weren't explained anyway... The sub plot with Fasbender was good (mainly due to him), if entirely predictable...

I think any interpretation you that works for you is okay, because Ridley Scott is just making this shit up as he goes along. The ending of Prometheus strongly implies that a sequel will feature Elizabeth Shaw, but Michael Fassbender's performance was the only really good part of the film, so Scott said, "Fuck it - it's the David Show now."

I do agree with the theory we are very violent and become too dangerous for everyone else. They wouldn't just decide to wipe a race without good reason, or unless they are evil.

In one of the scripts theres dialog thats lost in the film. The engineer tells shaw & company that the engineers took a human baby from 'a mother'. They brought this child to their planet & taught him the mysteries of life & the reasons. Then they returned this child, now grown, to Earth. Then the engineer says something like "And you punished him & destroyed him!" So I get the feeling that Jesus wasn't an engineer. He was a human raised by engineers & taught The Mysteries

My theory is, the engineers saw how wonderful Mankind is, and Man's limitless potential, and, after comparing it to their own limited, insipid, effete species, became jealous and decided on a sneak attack before we grew too powerful to fight back. My theory's no sillier than this one, and is free from the "Mankind sucks, capitalism sucks, the military's stupid" theme the Alien movies have all had. Edit to add: In fact, I have a variation on this theory: The engineers created Mankind to be a slave race to them, and incorporated this affinity for slavery into our DNA. But our ancestors bred with the native Neanderthals, and developed an instinct for individual liberty and self-reliance. One of the engineers tasked with examining how we were coming and if we were ready yet to be harvested as slaves, happened to stumble upon the U.S. circa 1920-1988, saw that we were "defective" for the purpose of making us slaves, grew fearful upon seeing the power of capitalism in the hands of individualists, and decided to commit genocide rather than risk us wiping them out when we discovered what scum they were. They then reseeded the planet with a virus meant to eliminate this strain of DNA, but designed it wrong, merely creating HIV. When they saw our resistance to this, they decided they had to resort to the black goo. Yeah... I like that theory best.
