I would not even call it giving their baby monkeys a bath . . . more like exercising: Warm Up > move whole body while trying to hold baby still, who is constantly squirming, to get clothes and ginormous diaper off . . . Cardio > chasing baby around to keep putting back in tub bcuz they are climbing out . . . Arms > bicep curls by repeatedly splashing water over baby before, during & after washing with shampoo, which no doubt is not the tearless type, stinging baby's eyes . . . Shoulders > lateral flies by lifting baby in and out of water bcuz they keep trying to get out . . . Abs > crunches from same exercise above of lifting baby back into tub . . . Legs > squats can be done by again using the same exercise for abs, lifting baby up and down to keep them in the tub . . . Cool Down . . . bath is finally over, wrap baby in towel, and take deep breaths to get heart rate down.

What they are doing is all for show to get viewers to watch. Flailing, squealing monkeys are much more fun to watch. Pooping during the bath is a bonus.

Okay, but it's all relative. People do much, much worse to these guys. There were some videos that went into detail and it is beyond horrific how some baby monkeys are treated. So these two might not be in an ideal situation (in the jungle with their mothers), but they aren't in bad shape either. They aren't in a lab being slowly killed, and they aren't being tortured for profit. Nature is pretty cruel too and many baby monkeys are killed by adult males during power struggles If these were puppies would you have made the same comment?

Like many of the people interested in primates, I have done a fair bit of reading on the current issues that threaten their continuance as a species. Other than habitat loss, one of the major threats is the black market exotic pet trade. Many of the countries these videos are shot in do not allow private individuals to confine primates and keep them as pets. Each of these countries also have sanctuaries and rescue organizations expressly for orphaned primates. I had just assumed there would be some level of pragmatism for the situations you described, however you’re probably right in that it would have to be spelled out for everyone. The only important point I had was that there are options open for these little guys before a private citizen would need to keep it at home (and on KZfaq ). They can be taken to a place where there are experts, and the primary goal is to get it adopted by a mama monkey and eventually be released back into the wild as part of an established troop. I agree there may be situations where that isn’t possible, although these should be rare.
