When psychologist Norman wrote a report for the government on how to deal with extraterrestrial life forces, he didn't expect his recommendations to be used. Now that a secret government agency is investigating what may be an alien spaceship that has been discovered partially buried on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, Norman finds that the plan he outlined is being put into effect and that the team he named in his report has been assembled.

Food for thought: They thought about forgetting about the sphere and depositing it somewhere outside of human reach (for now). It flies out into space, where, in a likelihood, in a few hundred years, an American space ship will stumble upon the sphere in outer space, triggering this whole sequence of events. They are likely in a closed loop then ;) One of the three probably subconsciously wondered that in the future, humans will rediscover the sphere and/or they all thoughts humans weren't ready for that power "yet"

I like that the sphere manifests people's thoughts, what I remembered from the movie was that it manifested your fears. If the crew hadn't been paranoid and afraid nothing wrong would have happened. That's why Eliphas Levi (an actual historical persona, a phyllosopher and a believed sorcerer) taught that a practitioner of magick has no business in using spiritual force to summon, manifest, change etc. before one has formidable control over one's emotions, particularly the fear. He even developed a whole spiritual practices system dedicated to it based on classical elements (Earth, Air, Water and Fire) and their manifestations in human's psyche. Same point.

They needed a mathematician, as explained in the movie(if you actually go watch it), because the government figures mathematics would be their common language. They figure if all else fails they could communicate with numbers. Which is how they figure out the sphere is manifesting their fears and thoughts to begin with...
@Kevin7557
@Kevin7557 2 жыл бұрын
Which is insanely dumb logic. Look how various civilizations write their numbers. We'd struggle to communicate by numbers purely because we wouldn't know what the other is representing with their written language. Then when we cross that barrier we could still start a war. IF you or I saw 4 we wouldn't think anything of it. It's a rather nice number. In Asia, it is synonymous with Death. We have no idea what numbers could represent their equivalent of 666, 4, 13. We might end up threatening them unintentionally. If all else fails, we aren't talking. Unless both sides are interested in communicating we're not going to talk period.

With that logic we could start war by literally anything a gesture, sound, thought who even knows. If both sides would like to communicate its our priority to learn in which way writing, speaking, numbers or even some mind reading thougts, pictures who knows its more complex. So unintentionall threatening will happen either way, it just depends on how respectful we will be to each other to learn the correct way. Like saying bad words in other languages without you knowing someone would get upset right away and someone would correct you.
@mayfalltribe4747
@mayfalltribe4747 2 жыл бұрын
Again, the government(in this made up fictional sci fi universe not based on anything real or scientific) figures theres a possibility if they make alien contact, the life forms may find it easier to communicate with the team if they have a commonground. They cant say "well maybe we shouldnt try to speak with them because even a hand gesture might piss them off." They have to make contact and make it quickly to determine if its a threat. Its also worth noting, the government uses a body of work published by a psychiatrist on how to respond to alien contact should it ever occur. (Which again, you'd know if you watched the movie.)

The ending also hints that when the sphere rose from the ocean, it flew into the black hole where it then encounters the human ship in the future. The ship then ends up going back in time and lands on the ocean floor. Most likely due to the sphere's power which the pilots used when they desperately wanted to get back to Earth. @@alexanderzhmurov9624 that's probably the real reason the phenomenon is listed as unknown, it doesn't make sense that future space explorers would need 1990s people to tell them what a black hole is. So the idea that they had to either die or forget to keep the paradox at bay makes no sense. The reason it's an unknown phenomenon is because it didn't behave like a black hole, a ship wouldn't just stumble on a black hole like that especially an active one as shown. It would be obvious from lightyears away and easily avoided. And the ship wouldn't just survive the encounter if it was flown into one. The thing was manifested by at least one crew member, meaning it was a surprise and wouldn't have been recognized as a black hole due to it not behaving like one.

The movie lacks the final plot twist of the novel: the last lines strongly hint that Beth, who has long felt repressed and overshadowed by the males in her life, ultimately opted NOT to will her powers away at the last second while Harry and Norman do let go. The book ends with Norman suddenly noticing that Beth looked very attractive. As for Harry, the reason why he believed everyone was doomed to die was because the spacecraft's builders and crew did not leave any evidence about them knowing that their ship was destined to disappear and be rediscovered in 2009, hopefully to be reverse-engineered by the US government. He deduced that the information about the vessel's true provenance never made it back to the surface...and thus that the submarine expedition was about to meet some sort of sticky end.

Why they didn't just imagine become a billionaire, and suddenly pile of money drop in front of them rather than thinking about blowing their own habitat or believing their crew want to kill them.
@DrakeOola
@DrakeOola 2 жыл бұрын
Because they were deep underwater and stuck there because of a storm. It's easy to get scared like "what if a shark attacks us or a giant ass squid". They didn't know about the power back then so there was no reason for them to think "imagine if a billion dollars fell from the sky right now". Then when people start dying in front of you and you're actually being attacked by giant sea creatures it's easy to go in full panic mode "holy shit we're going to die" or "the creature wont stop unless we use this emp but it usually causes a fire so it's a last resort." They're already in panic mode and know it could cause a fire hence they start thinking about the fire and causing it to manifest. Dude already got attacked by the eel outside so when he stepped into the puddle of water he started thinking "hope some eel or snake like creature doesn't attack me again". It's impossible not to have negative thoughts like that when you're in a stressful situation. If you ever get stuck in a burning building try thinking 'imagine if I win the lottery' or something pointless when you're about to die. You wont be able to and the only thing on your mind will be "crap I hope the roof doesn't collapse on me or a giant fireball engulfs me". Started with the lady seeing a jelly fish then another crew member hearing about it and being scared because she got stuck in a school of jelly fish. She imagined "what if the jelly fish start attacking her rather than swimming aimlessly" and so they did. Soon as she died it was over since everybody else will be panicking now. It did sort of stop until he read the book about a giant sea creature attacking otherwise they might have all survived. Moral of the story could technically be "reading kills" but they were all bound to freak out eventually. Doesn't even have to be anything big either like for example you're walking on a slippery floor and think "hope I don't trip" then when you do you'll think "ohh god, hope that didnt break my arm" then when you're in pain "ohh god I hope it doesn't heal funny or remain broken". Literally impossible to get rid of thoughts like this. It's just human nature to worry about things and think ahead to avoid danger. You go in the woods, "hope I don't see a bear or get attacked by one". You go on an airplane, "hope it doesn't crash or a storm happens", etc...

Read the book, I read it when I was a kid. I think something about time travel was at the root of the whole thing. I remember the book getting pretty detailed and a little like Event Horizon. The characters would have to be deeply afraid of money for this billionaire scenario to work in the movie. Remember it manifests their fears or something like that, the movie was good but the book was amazing and detailed the sphere really well. I saw this in the theater and as it has been a while there were barely any people there and the others may have left early. The only thing we knew was that it was sci-fi as the commercials made sure not to spoil anything unlike with most movies today so it was the best way to watch it. So while it probably flopped I really enjoyed it.

True story, I worked with an Airmen with the last name Goodman, and he was lazy as heck. He made up vital signs on our patients that I discovered shortly before coming back from our deployment to Afghanistan. I discovered this on a 10 years old local National boy when I discovered the boy's vital signs at night time over the previous 3 nights were 20% higher than Goodman's made up vital signs when the child was awake that should have naturally been higher. I told the nurse. The nurse shrugged it off. We found the10 years old boy dead within 4 hours of me telling the nurse about the made up vital signs. This was June 2012, I have never gotten over it. The military never truly investigated the boys death. This man was anything of a "good man" in my book.

Might not be correct but possibly they aren't deep enough for crushing to occur from pressure, the only thing that would affect them at that depth is rising to the surface too quickly. Again, I'm not sure of the depth they are at.

@Alex BOU - Sadly no. “In short: most of the body can handle any pressure, but if we're breathing air the maximum safe depth is about 60 meters (190 feet), the feasible maximum with current technical capabilities (and special breathing gases) is about 500 meters (but, for safety reasons, those depths have only been simulated).”

This is why I tell people that the Oceans and Planet is much bigger than they're telling us. If only 5% of it has been discovered and we're really locked into a Dome, this means that the dome is huge and literally light years away which would mean that the span of Oceans should be infinite too. 🤔
