I've decided to read this highly acclaimed novelette after watching your video, mainly because I think I might appreciate the author's writing style. But also for the psychological and philosophical aspects. I'm guessing his perceived human failing was the lack of emotional connection or empathy with others, particularly women. It sounds like he may have grown up fatherless and never succeeded in becoming a father, or a very good husband, himself.

Hey cloisterene! Awesome to hear, I always feel that if I can gently push someone to do some more reading I'm making the world slightly better haha. Whilst reading I'd also recommend keeping an eye out for passages where he does seem to feel some contentment. Most of the book he's struggling but I think there are a couple of places where you feel there might be some hope for him yet. An intriguing and smooth style for sure.

@@MereMortalsBookReviews Have already begun reading it and sincerely appreciate the advice. I very much enjoy writers who are good at conveying the full complexity of the human condition. Du Maupassant's "Solitude" is another brilliant exposé of the problem of alienation.
