I love the story for how Aliens got green-lit. Basically, when "Alien" came out, James Cameron saw it in a theater and loved it and was anxious for a sequel. When he learned that there wasn't a sequel planned, he approached Ridley Scott and all but begged him to be given permission to make the sequel himself. However, Cameron had no directing credits to his name, and Scott didn't want his movie to be ruined by a bad sequel, so basically he said, "Here, have six million dollars, and make a movie that is entirely your own, and if that goes well, you can make the sequel." So Cameron took the six million and made "The Terminator" and needless to say, it went very well and he got permission to make the sequel.
@WormsLibrary Жыл бұрын
Nice anecdote but his first major directed movie was Pirahna 2, not Terminator and he'd made a short movies before even that. And the movie was financed by John Daly, HBO and Orion. Nothing you said was accurate
@HAL-st4ll Жыл бұрын
What ACTUALLY happened: Alien had been a big hit. The thought for a sequel had been in Talks with Scott, (Look up his original concepts for that, it's just Prometheus with Ripley) but Scott lost interest quickly and went on to other projects. Cut to 1982: James Cameron, freshly fired of Piranha, writes a Screenplay called The Terminator. A Producer named Gale Anne Hurd buys the script for 1 Dollar with the promise that he will direct and sends it to some studios. Many want it, but not with an unknown director, until United Artists gives him a chance. Gordon Carroll, David Giler and Walter Hill had read the Terminator script and liked it, so they wanted to meet that Guy. He wasn't interested in any of their projects, so as he was practically leaving already they mentioned Alien 2. Alien was one of JC's favorite films, so he said yes. They virtually gave him free reign and all the time he needed because they trusted him. Even though it took him 2 years because of Terminator and a shareholder told them to fire him because they liked him so much. 1984: the Screenplay to Aliens is finished and the Producers loved it. Terminator had also been a surprise Hit, so they just offered him the directing chair right then and there. Ridley Scott had virtually nothing to do with Aliens and absolutely 100 percent nothing with The Terminator. And James Cameron was asked for it, He didn't bring the initiative and He definitely didn't "all but beg" because HOLLYWOOD'S ALPHA MALE DOESN'T DO THAT! Literally everything you said there was wrong.

@rockn roll Meh, it all works. The point in Alien wasn't that it was indestructible, it was that shooting it would spray acid all over the ship, burn through the hull and kill everyone, while Alien 3 was in a prison where weapons weren't supposed to be allowed. I like that Aliens came at it from the "unrelenting horde" angle and added another dimension to the threat. They were also kept smart enough to communicate, find new paths to the humans, and to understand when they were facing a real threat (when Ripley's pointing her flamethrower at the eggs). I think Aliens actually managed a pretty damn good balance, all things considered.

Fun fact: The aliens in the franchise don't have an official name. They were never actually called "Xenomorph" in the original films. When Gorman says the word "xenomorph" in Aliens, he is using the word literally. They didn't know what they were looking for on LV-426, but were told there were possible unknown lifeforms there. Unknown lifeform means xenomorph. It's now extremely common to call them Xenomorphs for obvious reasons, but they have never officially been named, which I enjoy way more.
@Chaotic42Kami2 жыл бұрын
True. The closest we get to a name in any "official" canon is in the AVP movie, the first one, where they were called "Serpents" in the inscriptions inside the pyramid. Of course, you can also go to the AVP game SEGA made back in the early-mid 2000s and there they are called Xenomorphs by the humans and Serpents by the yautja. And, if I remember correctly, in AVP: Prey, a novel written WAAAAAAAY back when, the yautja called them something like kaidhe amehda or something like that, which translated as "Hard Meat", so there's that too.

Fun Fact: In the Director's cut there's a scene that precedes the Xenomorphs in the ceiling and helps it make a bit more sense. The Marines were able to pull four auto-turrets out of their APC and set them up in a defensive formation. The horde came charging straight down it, and it's only right before the last gun runs dry that the Xenomorphs retreat, then they attack by flanking through the ceilings. It adds a lot more to the movie overall, and makes the Xenomorphs feel much more as an unstoppable force.

I served in the Air Force for 11 years. 'Five by Five' is basically just a way of informing someone on the other end of a radio that the communication quality is good on your end. However, this was extremely rare to hear. A much more common phrase would be 'Loud and Clear' or 'Lima Charlie'. As for 'In the Pipe', I've never actually heard anyone say that. If I had to guess, I think it would have something to do with being on course.

Didn't Faith love to use that phrase in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, too?

There's a lot to love in this film. I personally think the relationships and human moments are at its finest here. The Marines show not only comradery--even in the darkest of events--but they are still loyal and serious to each other. When all of the Marines are waking up, you see how they interact and have fun, cracking jokes, being a bunch of jarheads that I can't help but love. Even in battle, they still care for each other and are not only shaken from the battle but shaken for losing most of their teammates aka Survivor's Guilt. The only thing I can say is they all went out fighting (even the ones cocooned and later chest-busted). Ooh-rah, boys. Ripley and Newt is the classic mother-daughter relationship but also can be debated as the "Rookie and Veteran" relationship. If something were to happen to Ripley, Newt would be more than happy and determined to protect her, especially if she got older and stronger. Yes, the mother/daughter one is far more obvious, but if Newt did grow up into a teen/young adult, you bet your ass she would be by Ripley's side in the war against the Xenomorphs. And if Ripley dies (old age, accident, murdered, what have you), Newt could easily take up the mantle she left behind and continue fighting. I think one of my personal favorites of these moments has to be between Ripley and Bishop. Right off the bat, she hates him because of the PTSD she is suffering from Ash. Which is completely valid. However, because of this, Bishop knows that Ripley is a fearless ally and will try his best to gain her favor. Yes, it takes most of the movie to do so, but when he manages to save their lives, she is willing to admit that she was in fact wrong to judge Bishop so quickly and apologizes for her prejudges. Bishop accepts...only to be skewered and ripped in half. Maybe I'm reading too much into this, but I love this movie to death.

The actor for Bishop actually learned the knife trick and that shot was all real with speed and real knife. He practiced over a few months and got really good at it. Also the Newt Shoot shot had to be done over and over again because the young actress kept sliding early because she loved the slide. I highly suggest watching the behind the scenes on these movies. They’re really interesting.

it is not liquid latex. it is milk. The reason is every colony ship have milk and its a base nutrient for babies and android have minimal biological needs (skin and basic circulatory system to maintain). it's also cheap to ship since can be dry and powdered. Perfect product for colonies...and good enough for androids.
