Several points. 1) Mentioned already, but important, what did the inscription say? 2) Where did the gun come from? How did it just end up in the display? 3) They had the orbitals. I can't imagine anyone with advanced, interstellar capability unable to land kinetic strikes from orbit. That alone would have lead to Earth's surrender. They wanted capitulation.... they had no need to land troops.

Why didn't they take the technology of the hand gun and create a rifle.... Which would be more powerful and accurate. I can't imagine an armed force using only hand guns. Though this story had potential, the growth of it didn't happen... Ultimately not making sense.
