Yeah, watching this in programming class (i already did all my work) just makes me wonder how the heck does this work on a programming level
@Spacious_Potato
@Spacious_Potato Жыл бұрын
@@LoraLoibu if I had to guess, whenever the player goes into that 2d view, the game does some sort of raycast from the player pov & bases the playable ground from what the rays pick up. Or the vertices of visible blocks are cast to the player then lines are drawn connecting the blocks
@exister6652
@exister6652 Жыл бұрын
@@Spacious_Potato Couldn't you also just process the screen itself for the colors to create a temporary screen of collision? (I say just, of course it'd be pretty complicated lol)
@Spacious_Potato
@Spacious_Potato Жыл бұрын
@@exister6652 Yeah, I can see that working, but I still think just taking the lines would be more efficient. You only have to deal with a few lines max per cube, vs a bunch of pixels. Plus if implemented wrong, you could end up with choppy slopes, so you would likely need to smooth the pixels. That's one of my favorite things about coding, there are just about a thousand ways to handle any scenario.
@exister6652
@exister6652 Жыл бұрын
@@Spacious_Potato Maybe you could also have each corner of any square as a God point, and whenever you pause the screen, use the four God points of each face to construct rectangles of collision. Also yeah 100% the different ways to solve (and to be honest, accidentally create) problems is one of the coolest things about code.

What's even more impressive is this game was made by college students for a class, and if I recall right, some of them went on to help create the Portal games at Valve.

I don't think this team went on to portal. That was another group at Digipen their group had made a portal game with a dungeon / magic aestethic iirc. This game was made a few years later iirc.

@@EmilBjrn - The Portal team did a student game called Narbacular Drop, which was basically the same mechanically to the original Portal. The people who made _another_ student game, "Tag: The Power of Paint" got hired to help make Portal 2 - which was basically Portal, but with Tag's spraypaint mechanic :P Sadly, the Perspective team didn't get hired to make Portal 3 to mash up portals with paint and perspective mechanics, but that's not surprising given how high Valve can count.
