A Monster's Expedition Part 20 - despite everything, at least we have the snowmen. I think it should be made clear that I didn't get tired of this game, it's more that the type of puzzles that this game offered changed, and I'm not personally a fan of the new type of puzzle. Nothing wrong with liking it, that just means you'll enjoy playing the game even more.
Edited by: BenBenRanger ( / benbenranger )
A Monster's Expedition is a new open world puzzle game from the makers of Cosmic Express! Push, roll, and stack logs to hop from island to island, learning about humans along the way. Solve hundreds of puzzles in this massive open world adventure!

I should be clear that I didn't get tired of this game because of how long I've been playing it, but because the end game uses a different style of puzzle from the rest of the game - open world/open ended puzzles. I personally get zero enjoyment from open ended puzzles, and that goes for any game, not just this game. Nothing wrong if you do enjoy them (you'll enjoy playing this game even more if you do), but I want to talk about my own preference when it comes to puzzles and how I still found a way to enjoy these last few levels. I prefer for a puzzle to have a clear beginning or a clear end (or both), where the challenge lies in using the large amount of information available to form a strategy. I find great joy in having confidence in the starting information, rather than having doubt, which directly impacts my intuition and ability to come up with interesting ideas. Some people may see the sowing of doubt as a positive because it's "real", but I heavily prefer games that are an escape from real life, rather than an emulation of it. These late game puzzles give you incomplete information, as you can begin from any of the 20 surrounding islands, and you can end by reaching the island from any row or column as long as it intersects with the cloud. The only choice you have for many of these puzzles is surveying the surrounding islands, forming a list of potential candidates for starting points, and going through the list one by one, meticulously trying every way you know to use that area as an access point. This is known as guessing and checking. Pretty much every single open ended puzzle requires guessing and checking, but sometimes they throw in fun and interesting tricks as a part 2 after the guess and check portion. A few of the "extra tricks" in this game have been transferring logs between islands, pushing a double log over a rock, and finding a way to topple a tree from an unsecured raft (as well as a couple others you guys haven't seen yet). These tricks are extremely fun to figure out when you're confident in your information, but for open ended puzzles, any brain power that goes towards strategy is instead thinking "what if the starting point is simply different". I've asked this plenty of times before, and I'd like to ask again: is there truly any way to improve at the guess and check portion of open ended puzzles? My current strategy is a mix of "if I'm met with any resistance, move on to the next item on the list" and "pick an item on the list and force complete confidence that it is the correct starting point, allowing yourself to come up with creative tricks you wouldn't consider otherwise". Asking chat for the starting point was an accelerated version of the second portion, as it was the only way I could enjoy the last few puzzles. While I respect the devs for making the levels they want to make, I personally would have enjoyed more information being available in the form of thinner clouds. Being able to see the rocks and the shape of the island would speed up the guess and check portion greatly. If doing so suddenly makes a puzzle too easy, I would consider that a failure in level design. The final level of the next episode features thin clouds, letting you see everything you need to know about the level, but many people still considered it to be extremely hard. I took no hints from chat on that one, and it ended up being my second favorite level in the whole game. On the other hand, there were several levels that had a solution of simply bridging across with a double log, however the clouds made it impossible to see the gap in the first place unless you stared at that spot for 30 seconds straight waiting for a glimpse of land. Anyways, I can handle an open ended level once in a while, but too many of them back to back made me crack and ask chat for help. I still had fun solving the levels after consulting chat, but apparently it isn't fun to watch. Maybe in the future, I will skip over open ended levels entirely. Thanks for reading. Thoughts?

I personally like watching you figure things out yourself. That said, I think it would be considerably *less* fun to watch you struggle, get frustrated, and quit. I'd rather you consult chat whenever you need, since you clearly get enjoyment out of fully-completing a game, which is what attracted me to your channel in the first place. tl;dr Don't feel bad about consulting chat. Do what makes you happy! It's all we want.

Open ended puzzles require a much different mindset to solve -- you have to be willing to bumble about, fail, completely make a fool of yourself as you experiment with things that have no hope of working. I think streaming this is a lot harder considering you feel pressured to solve the puzzles as quickly as you can. You mentioned multiple times that you didn't want to "waste time" which is a clear indicator that you feel this pressure to solve with people watching. I don't think open ended puzzles lend themselves particularly well to streaming but if you want to make it happen I think it requires a much more laid back approach and an openness to failure.

I think games like this could use a "you're done here" indicator. Like, give all of the islands a red, blue, or green filter over it in a special lens so you can see what islands are still involved in puzzles. That way, it is clear where you can still try to solve a puzzle.
@LordSoulSicarious
@LordSoulSicarious 3 жыл бұрын
Eh, figuring out *what* the puzzle is and which islands are involved is half the fun I'd say. I think the bigger issue with this is how much it drives completionism. There's no natural stopping point between reaching the credits (which is super easy) and completing the map. Ideally, there needs to be an inbetween point so people who want to keep going past the "ending" but not complete all the super hard meta puzzles can have a satisfying ending.

Funny story for the puzzle around 16:00 , I actually completely forgot you could have a big log on top of a rock. It may have taken me 2-3 hours, but I managed to solve that puzzle in a completely unintended way involving the two islands to the left of the ones in the main puzzle. My motto for this puzzle basically became “when in doubt, add more logs” and when all was said and done my unintended solution was the most fun I had in the entire game. This game may be extremely polished, but there are still ways to break it.

Tyler, Tyler, Tyler. It is always fine to ask for help when you need it the most, whether that's is a puzzle game or in real life. If you are asking for help, it means you are growing mentaly. It doesn't mean the level will be easier too, because we usually _see_ you do but rarely _actually_ do it. That means that by asking for help, you are passing the puzzle to the audience and see what _they_ think with _their_ knowledge (which is 99% of the time lesser than yours). And you wanna know the best part? I find that much more intresting that just you doing the puzzle! So don't _ever_ think that was a bad developpement. The community is there for this reason too: if you are unsure of your next move, maybe one advice from one random guy puts you closer to success...

Yep a level editor would be really cool but maps would have to be highly curated in order to make playing one at random be worth it. The frustration Tyler experienced with the open-endedness is somewhat put at ease by the fact that the levels are made by the devs themselves and can be guaranteed to be reasonable and well-tested. This is generally not the case with player-made levels and the inherent explosion of possibilities in this game would make most levels a headache to solve.

Not sure how well it would translate to twitch, but one of my favourite game series is Professor Layton- story driven puzzle solving game for the DS/3DS but I'm pretty sure they released one for the switch (I don't have a switch but I remember seeing ads for it). Puzzles in the Layton games either have their own story, or play into a much larger story- the games also all have side quests and minigames etc for when the main stories gets intense. In general, I don't think DS games always translate the best to twitch, but it would be super interesting to see it on the channel if the switch version would work. Regardless though, I'd recommend the games to just about anyone, they're a lot of fun & don't really get to the point where you're exhausted with them.

Reposting this out of the pin: I think the devs may have came to the same consensus as it seens almost all of the major open ended puzzles come after you would reasonably be able to beat the game. They feel like they are meant as the extra/ bonus levels for the player to do, even the non snowman puzzles. I agree the thin clouds should be an option for those who want it, or maybe a zoom and stare at the island for 3 seconds it thins a little to give an outline. Stare 10 seconds and it highlights islands needed to solve the island.

I was also thinking that maybe they could have made a log( pun intended) of all the mechanics/techniques you have used or learned that you can look back at when stumped( always intended)

If you're looking for any more puzzle games that are definitely not open-ended, I can still recommend the Submachine series. A word of warning though, some of the later ones you will likely need to take notes.

What would happen if you pushed a double log onto a small log, but the small log is in the position that the end of the double log would end up? Because, if it's at the beginning of the double log, it just does the tumble thing, so what would happen if it was at the end of the double log?

if the small log is perpendicular to the double log then the small log gets pushed, I'm not sure off the top of my head what happens if they're parallel, though my guess would be that the double log splits in two and creates a land raft? and if the small log is standing then I'm 90% sure it just falls over

IIRC, I'm pretty it pushes the small log, causing it to roll away.

I feel like u should ask twitch chat for a lot more help and just talk to them more. I mean, there are entire streams of just people talking to chat so you could do something like that and play a videogame at the same time. Eventually, even if you aren't completely tryharding the level, you'll reach a point where you can solve the level with help from chat. I'd really enjoy it if you 100% the game, you are so enjoyable to watch as a variety puzzle game youtuber and streamer so hopefully you keep playing. Thanks

I totally understand where you're coming from. Personally, I don't mind open-ended puzzles that rely more on intuition rather than following what the developer intended. I think the problem, at least judging by these videos, is that the puzzles themselves are pretty linear, the game shouldn't punish you for not being on the "correct" island. and the game shouldn't expect you to figure it out. It's annoying to have to spend a long time on a puzzle only for it to be impossible, or even worse, being close to the correct solution but it's too hard to solve so you assume it's impossible. I think for the most part this game should allow you to go to any island from any island without having to rely on any glitches and exploits.
