It’s insane how the puzzles are designed so that you don’t accidentally discover a mechanic before you are supposed to.

Even cooler is even with with knowledge of the other mechanics you can't break past levels, thus forced to remember what mechanic was even used when making connections/wires

For the puzzle with the long worm and the tiny island of 3 at the bottom, for some reason, I didn't even think to ouroboros all the pieces together like that. I just cut off a piece of my tail to fill the goal between the fences, then made a 3 long horizontal piece and pushed all the individual pieces across my bridge. Looking at your solution, I feel like mine was... less intended.

@@muntedfinger Was thinking about it more, and I think the best way to prevent my solution would be to put some walls on the other side of the fences. But theoretically even that wouldn't stop my solution. TO full stop it, you'd need to space out the two sides by the length of the worm, but I think that's unrealistic. Anyway, good luck discouraging my solution!

Aliensrock, I'm a new subscriber. It was like, a week ago when i saw your first video - might have been Peglin, might have been another random indie game. I ended up enjoying it but I wasn't like, super engaged. A day or two later, your first video for Can of Wormholes pops up in my recommended. It's been a long time since I've sat through a dedicated youtuber's playthrough of a non-roguelike game. I've fallen in love with this game and your pure puzzle solving skills. I consider myself good at Puzzle solving but my god, I wouldn't have even come close to half of these solutions. Watching you solve these puzzles, enjoying the strange world that this game takes place it, it's been an amazing journey. I've since subscribed and I can't wait to start your playthrough of A Monster's Expedition.

One of these days, I need to refind and then link you to a sokoban logic paper, as it presents good terminology for explaining the problems and solutions of sokoban puzzles, (without the listener even being to see the layout!), and then at least it'll change from "There's not really a good way to explain block puzzles" to "There's a good way to explain block puzzles but I'm not going to read published math papers to find out"
@peixes5
@peixes5 Жыл бұрын
sokoban is boring and that is all there to this, it's a raw blueprint that can always be expanded upon, In its origins they rebranded as many things in the US and Europe before to try to seem more interesting and marketable, despite its logic and great influence in all puzzle games is just not really engaging for many people. Monster Expedition that he played to full completion is a sokoban type but look how much more engaging it is and how is just not logic combinations of movement but imaginative combination of mechanics rather than to just "Push the thing in the right order and right place at the right time." sorry for the rant
@MurderWho
@MurderWho Жыл бұрын
@@peixes5 there are many types of puzzles which are boring when you don't have a detailed terminology to discuss them, and motivating problems to advance them. if I say "final fantasy is boring because all you do is level up and then hit bosses with their weak elements", then, well . . . yeah. but challenge running, say, an FF4 randomizer, suddenly you have to care about stuff like managing which behaviour track a boss is on and paying attention to monster type weaknesses, (which you would be forgiven for not even knowing about from the base game). sokoban puzzles are essentially limited in that the majority of interesting classes of problems you can create involve a great deal of nested solution algorithms. Coming up with the algorithms might involve a great deal of ingenuity, but writing down or performing the actual moveset in a game is an exercise in tedium. Moving 24 boxes through the same maze is an entirely different challenge than moving 23 boxes, sure, but moving 23 boxes already took 5 solid minutes just to input the solution. which means that when you bring alternate mechanics in, you can create compactions of sokoban puzzles that rely primarily on sokoban solutions, (in the sense that they preserve the central idea of a sokoban puzzle that is expressible without the added mechanic), but require far less movements and faffing about to express a solution for. Tyler *often* runs into this. So a study of the language and algorithms of sokoban would benefit his ability to explain how mechanics compress fundamental strategies from sokoban. . . .but why learn a field of math just to explain some elements of puzzle games better.
@peixes5
@peixes5 Жыл бұрын
@@MurderWho The point that I was trying to make it is that sokoban is always the same math system, you do the exercise of thinking of all the possible combinations and go for the direct solution, there is no fluff or guise to hide the core fundamentals that it is a Math problem that is being solved Games by all means lean on repetition of a fundamental mechanic or idea, but the variations of the said ideals are mixed together with presentation and more indirect approaches to lean the player on the right direction to make the experience seem different and unique from each individual problem, that is the purpose of a entertainment medium But is Sokoban fun? Yes, no, maybe. Depends on the individual but for the majority of the people the answer is no because it always seems that you are doing the same thing even if theres more brain or mechanical skill to that. Im not Tyler, but I do not believe he says he cants explain box puzzles because he does not understand its logic or its deep intricacies, but because stripes the identity of a different puzzle that he was doing for a more mundane approach that he will find unfun. (pushing a thing in the right way)
