Alienware Area-51 upgrades (part 1)

My Alienware Area-51 R2 is 6 years old and was showing some issues. So I decided to upgrade some parts:
- the original power supply was swapped for a Corsair RM1000x modular PSU.
- The 3 original fans were replaced by 5 Corsair RGB fans (3 HD en 2 LL) which are now controlled via iCue thru a Comannder Pro
- I installed an NZXT internal USB hub. Because the Alienware (msi) motherboard only has 1 usb header, and you need a 2nd one for the RGB.
- Instead of the 1 original CPU radiator fan, I installed 2 corsair fans in a push-pull setup.
- I replaced my Founders edition Nvidia GTX980 with a Gigabyte RTX 3080 Aorus Extreme GPU
- 16GB RAM got replaced by 32GB (4x8GB) Corsair Vengeance pro RGB RAM memory
- I modded the Alienware side panel so it has a plexi window so I can see the internals of the system
Only the motherboard and CPU remain the same. That will be for a future upgrade.

@@linsean254 Yes the 3080 or 3090 will fit. You will need to remove the original gpu brackets though

Ram isn't working beeps twice continuously. Also cloned ssd drive wont boot as main

does the RTX 3080 work good with the original motherboard? the Dell Tech told me that the motherboard does not support the RTX series, cuz I am getting a 3080 Ti now, really worried

Yes it does. Not sure why this question? As you can see in this video, my rtx3080 works with the original Alienware motherboard. 1 issue you might face is CPU bottleneck. Some games which are more cpu intensice, could have an issue.

Do you think If you upgrade the motherboard, the lights on the chassis itself would go out? I'm afraid to upgrade my motherboard because of this issue

The lights will remain in their 'last mode' so normally the lights will still work. However if you connect the IO board to your new motherboard then in theory you should be able to control the lights again using the Alienwarefx software. I have not tried this yet, but I belive some other youtuber has done this.

have the same rig but didnt upgrade to 3080 or 3090 due to it not having 2x240mm fans for the hybrid versions, noticed yours isnt a hybrid and its just a regular card. you dont have any heating issues i remember installing a 1080gtx and temps would hit up to 80. right now have a 2080 rtx hybrid and temps never go above 51. how high does your temp go with that 3080?

My 3080 is the aorus extreme version, with 3 fans. Not only is it quiet but it stays really cool. You don’t need a hybrid. Under full load my gpu never went above 72 celsius

@@Mobi666 but 72c still seems high. im running less then 50c due to hybrid. so you dont suffer any lags at all once it hits 68c?

@@TheSodatastegood I don't know where you get that from? 72c is not high for this type of GPU under full load. Of course a hybrid card will always be cooler, but that's normal. I have no heating issues and no lag.

@@Mobi666 thanks might have to get a 3080 then. i used to have a 1080gtx before the 2080 and would overheat due above 70-80 or higher due to air restrictions inside the r5. it would start throttling my games bad.

Hi! How did you bypass the bios fan error? Ive try with the corsair ml 120 Pro and everytime i start my computer the same error happen...

I did not change the motherboard. If you change the fans you need to connect them to the same fan headers on the motherboard as the original fans.

Yo bro nice . Thanks for the video . My Area 51 R2 power supply died yesterday after years of use lol. Now I see ur videos and I want to lear how to upgraded like urs or even better if possible . Money it’s not inconvenient but knowledge yes 😢. For now I have been watching some video how to open and I’m gonna take out the power supply by myself . Any advice . Thabnk u again

ANY modular power supply will work... I installed the corsair RM1000X in my system. You can remove the screws at the back of the PSU and then just remove it, it is simple.

@@Mobi666 the original cable pins are different from Corsair RM1000x. how did you resolve the issue? Please advise. I never try to build it myself.

@@ml1507 What do you mean with the pins are different? I replaced the original power supply with a corsair RM1000X. The Corsair has a bunch of cables supplied with it so you can connect it to the motherboard and also to the new GPU. As my GPU is Aorus 3080 xtreme I need 3 8 pin power connections to my GPU alone!

@@Mobi666 For example, the original psu has all 6 pins but this Corsair RM1000x has a number of 8 pins for PCI and CPU and also motherboard pins are not 24pin for the original psu. so are you saying that I can just change the cables to fit the pins then it will work? my computer just doesn't turn on and the green light at the back of psu is off. so I am going to replace psu first and luckily I found the original OEM one from one of chinese company so I will see if it will work otherwise, I believe I need to change the motherboard. What do you think?

@@ml1507NO! When you change the PSU you need to use the new PSU cables!!!! Never use the old PSU cables with new PSU or you risk frying your computer.

Would you recommend the case, Ive been thinking about buying the case and put the internals from my pc in there. Is the case completely made out of metal?

No it's mostly metal but the ftone, back and side panels are plastic. Yes I recommend this case for it's looks. This is not the most airflow efficient case, but it looks great.

@@niklaslinde Wait for what? If you like this case buy it. The case is big enough to fit the biggest RTX3090 GPU. And it looks really cool ane unusual. Alienware is not going to release another case like this anytime soon.

@@Mobi666 thing is a beast, i got mine from Newegg refurbished and the box was huge, at least 80 LBS and like 4ft x 4ft x 1ft at least, great system, i got it right before the GPU shortage really hit about a year ago now

What cpu do you currently have and what is the current performance like? Is this also the stock r2 motherboard?

Still the original cpu an i7 5820k. Yes the morherboard is still stock. So the stock components are the mobo, cpu and cpu cooler. Performance is great. I did apply new thermal paste onto the cpu.

Hi, i have another question, how did you manage to add USB internal motherboard hub? i tried with a splitter via the single port but i don't trust it. It can destroy maybe everything.. Is there another solution ? thank you in advance.

I used an nzxt usb splitter. it is connected to the only usb port on the motherboard. It works just fine. I now have 3 usb headers instead of 1. I use 2 of them: 1 for the I/O board and 1 for the corsair commander pro which I use to control the rgb fans & leds

hi, I have Alienware area 51 r2 for a couple years now & my CPU cooler just went bad I try reaching out to dell & my local pc store they say dell no longer makes them, any idea what I can do about this ???

Don't buy anything from Dell! You can install any 'single rad' watercooler block. For example the Corsair iCue H60i RGB. Also it has RGB and it is only 100$/100€.

How did you attach the second front fan ? no bracket, hard to find. I want to do the same

Hi, the bracket can not be bought anymore from Dell. I tried it and Dell told me they can't sell it to me because my computer is "too old'... I then found a bracket on a shady chinese website which never arrived... In the end I attached the fan with double sided power tape.

any ATX motherboard will work. I used an MSI motherboard because it's easier to connect the front IO cables. But any ATX mobo will work. However it will never be polug and play, you need to extende the front IO cables as mentioned many times. (look at my part3 video for more info and links about this)

In this video yes I was still running the original mobo and cpu and RAM. However look at the other parts in my video series where I swapped everything.

@@Mobi666 I have I’m trying to just upgrade my gpu but I don’t understand if my i7 cpu and x99 MB can handle a 3070ti if I need to upgrade my cpu I will swap MB with a R4-R5 MB to achieve the i9 but keep it original to aloneware but now I’m confident since you had a 3080 on a i7 cpu and x99 mb and it worked I assume I can finally be confident enough to upgrade my gpu without damaging it or well I still don’t know how benching works but I just don’t want to full bench my gpu I believe that might be bad ( still learning about pc building ) thank you for replying!!! Love your set up

No, because of a few reasons. The 3090 is stupid expensive and not worth the price difference for the performance you get. My Aorus 3080 extreme plays all current games on ultra settings on an ultrawide 34" 120hz monitor without issues.

How did you get the PSU inside ? My psu is shorter and doesn’t lock into place please help

I removed the psu cover, the new psu slotted right in. The fact that it is shorter does not matter. All psu’s have a default size so any psu should fit really.

I didn't swap the motherboard as I said in the description.... which means all leds are actually working.
