My wife’s first job she got partially due to her honesty and bluntness. The interviewer was acting like experience would be an issue & she piped back, “How am I supposed to get experience when nobody will hire me?” (She had been turned down from a few places prior) They liked her attitude, though TBH it was a gamble. The i terviewer could just as easily been offended, but…it paid off.

I had a business owner tell me that theory is not important. So I said if so, would you want a doctor who didn't study and learned only on the job from their mistakes killing and harming people. Unfortunately this only left him embarrassed and strengthened his position probably because thats how he learned.

I love how you said "if you want to work in a plant try an internship in a plant to see if you like it" like you can just get any internship if you fancy one. I applied to every single civil engineering internship at every single career fair during my undergrad and interviewed for many of them but I never once got an internship offer. Now I'm out of college and screwed for getting a job.

You know, as insightful as this video is, it’s made me realize that the naivety and idealism of high school students are so taken advantage of that when they become college graduates who try to enter the workforce, the world crushes them. Nobody is properly advising them in the manner that you do so in this video. Gosh, how naive have I been!

Im a psychology student about to graduate. One summer, I was supposed to do a research project and had a medical emergency and had to go home three states away for summer. The next year I was studying abroad. After that, covid barred me from being able to do research. Now all internships are asking for people with specific research histories. It's terrifying.
@caligirl4evr1
@caligirl4evr1 3 жыл бұрын
Can you reach out to one of the professors in your department to see if you can arrange an independent study/research project? Maybe there is a graduate student who would let you work on a project? Did you write a senior thesis on a specific topic? Talk to your professors and see how you might fill this gap. Good luck and don't give up!
@tink5337
@tink5337 3 жыл бұрын
@@caligirl4evr1 So I'm doing an independent study, but those are basically meta-analysis style research. Nothing published or with you're name on it. And our program only does senior thesis for undergrads if you're in a research project or in the honors program. I was supposed to qualify for it but had to take a semester off so they wouldn't let me. Im also moving states next month so I can't do research here. So my best bet is internships or assistantships after I move. I'm just not sure how to go about nailing one without previous experience. Any advice on that part? I'll be in a big city, so there should be lots of opportunity. The big question is how to get in the door, you know?

I’m in the same boat but in the humanities division. Covid really put us behind. I had an internship lined up for last summer and it cancelled because of the pandemic and now I need that experience. Overqualified for jobs in my local market (Kentucky) that ask for HS diploma and underqualified for pretty much everything else. Really sucks. Best I can say is keep trying. Yeah, so having gone through this on a level in tech school, it's pretty accurate. I actually went to employers before school. Networking is almost more powerful than experience itself (I rarely had people care for my education). Got dibs on a very good job that unfortunately was very toxic in a niche market, but that's unrelated. Many technical schools have cheap, short programs for management or general value skills some with like Microsoft certifications and it's a shame how under the radar they are.

Finally got an offer but was low balled severely, then found out I can’t move into a analyst role in the bank due to gpa requirements. To all those trying to find internships, don't give up. I stopped looking for engineering-based internships because I thought that they only catered to people with experience (NOT ALL INTERNSHIPS DO). There are plenty of internships that cater to high-school students, i.e. people with NO work experience period. If you are lacking in experience for the advanced internships, go smaller. A lower-level internship with a good company is still an internship and it looks better on your resume than tons of work at retail or fast food, or anything similar that is unrelated to your field.

I totally can relate with you and it sucks even more when people tell you that you are worthless for not having a job even if you are trying hard. My recommendation to you is to get with your career services at your school. They will help you to get your resume and paperwork into shape. Don't give up. Try for internships rather than full-fledged positions. Many internships even cater to High-school grads, i.e. people with NO experience. Trust me, you will feel like your school was worth it if you are actually working in some level of your field, rather than something completely unrelated.

Start practicing and preparing for your interviews now.

I understand the frustration. The key is getting some relevant experience to draw from. I'd suggest checking with your school's career services department for entry level roles, even consider applying for internships. Likewise, look for project based/contracting roles to help build your resume to start with. Work on your own project and create a simple website to show it off - the point is you don't want to sit idle waiting for a role. Be proactive. Good luck and keep me posted on your progress.

There are many problems with this video. 1. It’s easy to target big name employers it another story to actually get hired by them. 2. It’s very hard to locate considering most entry level jobs don’t even pay a livable wage. 3. “Just get an internship” much easier said than done. In some cases it’s harder to land an internship than actual job.

Finding something I’m not over or under qualified for, and trying to catch up after losing a year of internship time to the pandemic, and trying to pay loans back on the most common pay rate in my local economy (around $12/hour), and the fact that I still have too wide an interest for what I want to do. Plus I know I have a massive issue with imposter syndrome so I feel undeserving and unqualified for most everything, even restaurants (and I’ve worked restaurants since I turned 16).
