True but you can up your chances having a good résumé, not too many strange tables and fonts, keep it clean and make sure you have all the key buzzwords for the position, for example if you’re applying for a position as a software engineer and the job description is specifically needing a .NET developer you’ll want to have a lot of the key buzzwords on your résumé for that role, of course make sure that you have the experience before listing it but some examples like micro services or API or angular or C-sharp, SQL, monolith, Azure

Jobs appear to be paying less than what they had been just 2 years ago. Companies have gained the edge by leveraging the Tech. layoffs to obtain talent at rock bottom prices, with NO negotiation possible. Also, starting to see H-1Bs being hired with companies, who less than 6 months ago had layoffs. Over supply of workers, lower demand for labor.

It’s insane because I saw a posting a for a mid level electrical engineer for $25-$32 hr?! That’s how much I was making when I used to teach! I think the market is going to get a wake up call when it bounces back because millennials and gen z remember and don’t give a crap about company loyalty because it all amounts to lipservice

Personally, it was more difficult for me to find a job amid the 2008 financial collapse (there were many furloughs at the job I was working at back then and sometimes I was stiffed from getting paid which would be illegal) than it was coming out of the pandemic where I had more job opportunities 3 years ago. But now where I'm currently working, they've been having some issues with hiring people as at least 10 people were interviewed and almost all of them have either failed the background check or simply backed out. My late grandfather said it all when he foretold me that my career path will come with many twists and turns and that many opportunities will arise. But with today's job market, he was at least right about the twists and turns.

You should do something because it’s the right thing to do, not because you expect something in return. What you’re doing is a good practice. Hiring managers are under no obligation to reply, whether or not you thank them. Cold heart reality. Not saying it’s right, but that’s how it is

I've always liked this channel, I like the host, I think his advice is sound and comes from a background of experience and expertise. However, if you find yourself wanting to curl up into a ball under a lead blanket after watching this video, you are not alone. I detest almost EVERYTHING about job searching. I hate making a resume. I hate writing cover letters. I hate filling out job apps. I hate having to come up with phony answers to app questions like "Why has it been your lifelong dream to work at XYZ Corp?". I actually don't hate interviews, but I do hate that they are all over zoom now and there's far, far too many rounds. I hate being told I have to "stand out from the crowd". Buddy, I am the crowd. That's the problem. What the job search has really taught me is that if you don't want to go through this hell you need to have an actual profession. Doctor, accountant, SWE, airline pilot, nurse, lawyer, botanist, freaking dog groomer. SOMETHING. If you're just a person who is generally useful and helpful and even has the occasional great idea your resume is going to be lost in a sea of thousands of others just like you. I suck at networking. It's a natural skill and you either have it or you don't. No, don't tell me how you improved your social skills, you just learned to ignore your limitations (good for you, though). I actually do have a lot of experience with high profile clients and dealing with tricky situations, but that's hard to convey well on a resume. ATS scanners are looking for very specific things. I'm frankly shocked that I've had any interviews, and that just goes to show that despite the advice of this channel and hundreds of other job search gurus there is an element of randomness to all of this. I've somehow gotten interviews for jobs I am absolutely not qualified for and been ghosted for things where I tick every box and then some. I've tried to determine why the job search is such a slog even in good times, and I think it's because companies don't actually want employees. It's an acrimonious relationship. And I don't blame them. If I was in charge I wouldn't want employees either, they're a bummer. I know my luck has to change sometime and I'll get to go be a bummer somewhere.

If you tell yourself you suck at something, you will suck at it 100% of the time. Networking is NOT a talent. It's a learned skill. Sure, you can't teach charisma, but you dont need to be the belle of the ball to be good at networking.

I don't even bother a with a cover letter. I'm 46 and have plenty of different jobs. I let my resume stand out. Some with good longevity (12 yrs at 1 job). Plus 10yrs active duty military. I quit my toxic job 4 weeks ago. This past week I've applied to 7 different jobs in my area. My previous 2 jobs I got hired right after the interview. Yes I was nervous but I just did it.

My interview strategy that has worked for me is to be myself. I just act appropriate for the situation and show due respect, answer what I am asked and push my experience and credentials. I landed my last two jobs that way. You don't want to be a phoney in the interview as you will be found out once you get the job. They can take me or leave me. If they leave me, it probably wasn't the right fit anyway. Everyone uses "interview tips" but I back me being myself. I stand out because no one else can be like me, so being honest rather than contrived is the way to go. My mother says to be before interviews :"Be yourself. Because yourself is good".

@@ALifeAfterLayoff Yes, I network and only seek out hiring managers. They message me on LI about a "fantastic oppotunity" and when asked to see JD first they give me the attitude by ghosting. They do not like it when you advocate for yourself. They are assholes.

@@realJimMarshall Thank you for the encouragement. I did hit the ground running, but not by immediately applying to everything I could "maybe" do. I began by taking the next 24 hours to let things settle, including the shock, and my emotions, while I gathered myself for next steps. Then I got very clear on where I want to go from here. Now with clarity of my path, I'm not guessing what is next. I am all-in. The attitude helps, the effort has meaning, but clarity gives it all direction. Just wanted to share that with anyone else in the same boat who may benefit from it.

Although I have a good feeling about the future, there was nothing provided by the company. - No Severance - No written notice - No verbal warning - No Performance improvement plan - No training since the acquisition in Sep '23, instead of training, leadership applied pressure to close cases based on date targets rather than where a customer is at on their project. It was not a healthy environment, and it's clear that the new owner wanted to reduce staff. I was the convenient target they chose to begin that phase. I'm not bitter, I think it is going to be a good thing.

I work at a famous consulting company and I've always been told that if I have that company's name in my CV then I'll get another job easy. But I've been looking for the last 3mths now and I've been losing out on offers. Ironically, the reason is because many people who work in famous consulting companies like me are leaving as well and they're all on the open market 😭 so that company name prestige doesn't even matter anymore

I’ve been reading the market is more skills based now than reputational or work history. So just having an impressive company name on your résumé may not go as far. They want to know that they can hire somebody who can literally start doing the job from day one with minimal to no training

Even people who are perfect matches leave or get fired because employers are reposting within a few months to a year. It’s not us, it’s them and they don’t want to take accountability. Also, many recruiters are looking for commission. One boasted about a firm having numerous practice areas aligned with mine. Website confirmed it. Get the interview, talk about my experience and the interviewers looked as if they were hiring for 1 specific field. Employers are so focused on singular roles they don’t value where we can be valuable in others, and many recruiters aren’t picking up on this or don’t care. It’s ridiculous because in the past, employers wanted well-rounded candidates.

I went with an AI-free job search and relied only on my own writing skills, and it worked pretty well for me. After two months I got an interview and was offered the job. I think having AI edit everything from your resume and cover letter to your LinkedIn posts makes you look the same as everyone who is doing the same thing.

Yeah I haven’t had much luck using ChatGPT for my résumé. I’m pretty good at it and prefer to just do it myself. I do outsource cover letters to ChatGPT though lol because I absolutely hate writing them and I never really know what to say. That being said, I don’t just blindly pass it off after it spits it out. I modify it and try to make it my own a bit. Plus, the fact that we’re even including cover letters in 2024 sets us apart, because not many people take the time to do that

Got laid off in late February and this week is my first at a new job that pays better and industry is actually growing. The crazy thing is that a mag 7 company might make another offer soon that pays even more and is 💯 remote. It’s a tech company but the job is not tech. I am so grateful

Résumé customization takes a lot of practice and self-discipline, even for me, and I’ve been doing it the last few rounds of job searches over the years. It’s so easy to include more than what they’re asking for. Like I know how to program in a few programming languages, and it feels like I’m selling myself short by not mentioning all of them, but if they ain’t asking about it, I’m not writing it down. That’s the discipline you need to have

Great tips here. Most of these are what I recommend to my candidates. I especially like the idea of looking at LinkedIn or blogs to help out with finding opportunities. Tailoring the resume specifically to the top skills in the job description is crucial, but don't embellish your experience.

I was laid off in August. I hadn't taken a day off in 7 months so decided to decompress, collect unemployment, and enjoy the last days of summer. Q4 is notorious for being the worst time to job hunt. Q1 I had some health issues/depression. Now it's Q2 and I haven't even responded to a recruiter or applied for a job in months. Is there a way to turn this ship around? I am grateful that I am currently employed with my current company but the opportunities for growth are very limited because of long tenure. That’s why I am taking the steps to network, apply, and upskill. It’s easier to land a job when you have one supposedly

@@frankcorrea8691I hear the transport industry hires 50+ year olds. I have driven delivery trucks and vans. Most drivers are older. One guy told me on my first day that all of them are over fifty and are doing their last job before retirement. The industry picks older workers because older workers don't mind being out on the road and working on their own a lot, whereas younger people want joins that are more social.

This whole process is like a delicate little snowflake. Don't breathe the wrong way lest your chances of maintaining your livlihood be eradicated. Why is it that the onus is so heavily on the candidate? Can you speak to wtf the recruiters and HMs are doing to evolve this excruiciating process? Like, for example, learning English comprehension, or the nuances of the role they are recruiting/hiring for? Recently watched a video of a guy who applied using an obscene name (and even more obscene bullet points in his work history), but he had Amazon and Google in his work history and a degree from Stanford (all fake of course). The dude scored nearly 30 interviews out of 100 applications. It’s crazy right now, took almost a month to find anything I’d want to do. 100k tech workers laid off over the past 6 months makes it harder than ever. Recruiters are useless for job seekers. AI can screen a lot of resumes against a job description and use text to voice for an initial skill assessing call.

How do you network with recruiters on LinkedIn? I understand contacting other employees on LinkedIn who have a similar position as the one you want, and getting some advice from them. But is it acceptable to directly contact a recruiter on LinkedIn for the position that you're interested in? Won't they feel this is too forward or annoying?

Many job seekers do not have an interview strategy. What do you need to convey to the interviewer during your time together? How are you going to show that you are qualified and will fit in with the culture? Figure this out before you go to your interview. The key to success in an interview is figuring out how to solve the employer's pressing problems and talking about it in a way that they believe you can actually do it.

This year has been hellish. Several months of searching for senior-level jobs, and getting nearly no interviews. Night and day compared to three years ago and hugely demoralizing at this point in my career

How come if you find more than one suitable candidate but only one position, the next time the job is offered, the ones who missed out aren't offered the role before it starts getting advertised again. They say that they keep your resume on file but you never hear from them, even when new job openings come up. I bet the "file" they keep it in is a circular one.

I have searched for a job for nine months. Lately, i waited for a hellish month, after an interview only to be told that they were not hiring in my location. What the hell? My next option is not an option at all, at this stage of my life i can't turn night into day, taking this job will bury me literally. The job market sucks!!!! It needs to be completely revamped.

i work remotely and i am pretty sure they are trying to get us all fire by saying "we are going back to the office" or just keep silent and send us projects that are way too difficult so we can quit and it work from the 15 some thing that we were only 5 of us remain(am working as a data annotator) now after i study front-end web , and people telling me that my portfolio looks good, i have started applying for jobs and tried to do some networking (most of the networking is outside of linkedin) but it is not working. is may 30 2024 hopefully from august to january web dev internships will open but it will be a battle between web devs that have work experience vs entry level(0 experience in work force on that career) so even though this video is helpful is not for everyone it feels more for people who are more on the business and marketing section in other words the title is a bit misleading

I applied for pt sales support work, to have extra income. It made me feel uncomfortable that I would have to pay (for the product at the retail location that sells it) to demo the product in-house! I sent a respectful but honest email to decline the work I signed up for.

Ive pretty much stopped applying all of the salaries suck im looking into starting a buisness so i can have the money from under paying employees. Tight labor market means you can take advantage of prospective hires easier.

Stocks are booming partly because as companies announce layoffs they spin it as a way to cut costs (which is technically true). Stockholders look at that as “oh wow, company X is more profitable now because they are achieving the same performance with less people, let me rush out to buy more stock.” Add to the fact that we should technically be in a recession, but as long as the Federal Reserve doesn’t officially announce said recession, the stock market will remain higher. It’s a joke because the stock market really is not a good metric of the economy anymore, unlike GDP, unemployment, number of people in the middle class etc.

@@duncanhill6854 They are? Last I checked unemployment has been on the rise since January of this year. 2023 (at least the first half) was pretty good, but 2024 so far has been the year of the layoff. So I’d be surprised if unemployment numbers are “low.”

@@duncanhill6854 I think it's because the unemployment numbers are lying, they don't count in people who are unemployed but aren't actively looking for jobs or people who are working part-time.

I really (dislike) recruiters right now, and I am being kind. Why can't a recruiter just say 'you weren't chosen to move forward'. And stop it with the salary requirements. If you recruit a great/high performing employee and start them out below market value, expect them to leave for higher pay and not give the company a shot at upping pay or a promotion. Used car salespeople are higher up on the societal rung than recruiters right now. Sorry, most on here feel this way. I am sure you're a great person but man the talent acquisition department can fall off a cliff.

These aren't super helpful as there are no jobs to get in reality. Having a good resume or interview skills won't help if you can't get your resume to someone who is actually hiring.

I have found the most successful start ups are where you offer a service direct to customers. My mechanic was a mobile mechanic who went to people's homes and fixed their cars. Soon, he was so busy that I had to wait weeks for an appointment. One of my best friends is a handyman. He goes around and paints, fixes things and does renovations. A third person I know did a job fixing computers. All three did very well out of it, got a lot of regular business and made a lot of money. Because they work for themselves they also have few expenses. No office, as they travel to the customer. They only hire people for that job when needed and they buy their own supplies and add it to the bill. My friend works from his kitchen table. That is where he does his accounts for the business. The latest one is my sister in law finds things on hard rubbish dumps and sells them online and has done quite well.
