Thanks Brian. I was going to pay for a professionally written resume, but instead, I got a free resume evaluation from a career counselor at my school, University of Phoenix. I used the tips that helped it pass ATS compliance, and for the past 5 days, I've been getting interest from Indeed employers. I prefer interest from LinkedIn employers but hey it's something! 😂

Most jobs from LinkedIn are contract positions, not full-time, "permanent" positions. Too much bs on LinkedIn, as well. Indeed, Monster, Ziprecruiter, Career Builder, etc are almost all full-time, "permanent" positions. I use the "permanent" in quotations because we all know there's no such thing as a permanent job forever and why would someone want to be at a job for more than 4 or 5 years now-a-days, anyways! But, ya, Brian is THE MAN when it comes to telling the truth about the corporate world! Joshua Fluke is another great, no bs KZfaqr covering the working world and corporate America without any filters.

I have had “professional” resume writers review my resume several times and I have had other people tell me that they were wrong. I have been told to leave some things off and then told that I lied on my resume I wrote “targeted” resumes and never got any results. I think that the entire act is dumb luck. You have to be the lucky one that happens to end up at the top of the pile with the best results. Don’t deny that this is the actual truth. You barely go through the pile so most of us never get a chance.

From my personal experience, HR has some of the most scumbags of all the departments. There are so many back stabbings, nepotism and sabotaging an employee career. A friend works as an HR told me that they have a network of black list. Whoever name is put on the list won't be hired in many places. It can be any reason from bad employees to intentionally harming a good employee reputation.

It's based on using the right keywords & at the same time look good to eye of the recruiter/hiring manager. Also, I do customize each resume for the job I'm applying for at the time. The people that are hiring managers are really just people like you.They just put more effort into getting into a role where they hire, and/or luck. So, as best you can, put yourself into the headspace of a person hiring into a role you are applying to and evaluate your resume this way. If you find it difficult, dont worry its difficult to be that objective. However if you work on it, it will help you in other areas of your life because it's valuable to learn when to be critical and how to be objective and eliminate as much as possible you own biases. Look at your resume as if you were the hiring manager for the role, then edit the resume as needed.

I keep both ats freindly and human readable forms of my resume. Ats is great for applying but will not stand out for direct connections. If a recruiter reaches out i send them both forms, one to look through and one to import into the ats system. But if its a networking connection or hiring manager I send the the human readable one. Machines and humans do not process information the same way and I've had decent success in the dual approach.

@A Life After Layoff The ATS one includes essentially all the same information but it could almost have been written in notepad or word perfect in top down chronological fashion. The human readable adds a bit more flare and prioritizes the information a hiring manager or recruiter will want to see first while providing details on additional pages.

Thanks for your content. Valuable as always. Hired a resume writer 2 years ago. I was not and am not actively looking, but I realized my resume had become stale. Resume writer and I had worked side-by-side as chemists for several years. I first hired her as a life coach then got her help with my LinkedIn and resume. She knew the industry though not my specific role. She explained why she was doing things, plus I was more than willing to argue with her. I have a pretty clear vision of where I want my career to go. I just needed someone to help with the ATS, etc. and someone to keep me motivated through the process. I agree that hiring just any resume writer (especially if just working with just your old resume and a couple positions you might be interested in) can be a bad mistake. I strongly dislike when people I care about do their resume/LinkedIn with many diverse types of career focuses after being laid off. My "new" resume hasn't resulted in another job (which I am not seeking), but it has helped me to better direct my LinkedIn and resume for if I decide to (or am forced to). I keep my eye on the market, and not just Glassdoor. I look at the real market for what I do, geographic area, industry, etc. and have tweaked my LinkedIn a bit. Expect to tweak resume soon but nice think about updating LinkedIn is I can refer to it if I quickly need to update my resume. Thanks!

@izamalcadosa2951
@izamalcadosa2951 Жыл бұрын
The resume on LinkedIn is such for show and tell, just to get you looked at, mostly by recruiters looking to hire through contracts and some full-time, "permanent" positions. Most jobs on Linkedln the past 3 years, since the Covid-19 Pandemic and post-Pandemic, are contract. I've known about Linkedln, since 2012, and before the pandemic, about 80% of the jobs on there, more or less, where full-time, permanent roles. Now, I would say 60%-66% are for contract, contract-to-hire, temp or temp-to-hire. Most companies are trying to be cheap by not outright hiring, so as to not have to pay benefits, medical insurance, PTO, vacation, etc.

Are you suggesting that a person customize each resume to the job posting?
@Info-God
@Info-God Жыл бұрын
No. He generally says that with your personality you should apply only to those jobs that fit reasonable about minimum 60%. Like one size fits more not all. It is you and your experience! If the recruiters/companies can not see your value, next. What can you do is to have at the end of your resume a section: Keywords, where you dump al sorts of synonyms. It's perfectly legal and mainly ethical.
@izamalcadosa2951
@izamalcadosa2951 Жыл бұрын
Brian has said to customize your resume to fit the job posting and job title, as to give you a better shot at an interview or two, but this is time consuming and tedious. It does work almost all of the time but if you customize to the letter, this makes you seem fake and just trying to bs the company into interviewing you, because they really do think you are the perfect match, when in reality, no one can fit 100% of a job posting nice and neat, and that is the problem with most companies: They are looking for a unicorn and a super deity to solve all of their problems!

I actually have to update my resume Master list of every little skill, achievement and thing I've done over my whole career and instead put that in the prompt with the job description. This is free, and you can go back and forth and fine-tune and get new results from the same AI or use a different AI for a slightly different flavor. I have been through 3 resume writers and it seemed all three had different views on how many pages the resume should be, how many keywords should be added, how big the summary should be, and if projects should be added to the third page. My first writer overloaded my resume with skills and included skills I didn’t have to beat the ats. This was through flex jobs. They made the resume two pages. I had two paragraph summary followed by core skills then soft skills followed by job history and then tech skills at the bottom. They put education on top even though I graduated with a BA many years ago. The second person claimed to be a 10 hr vet that had hired for gov and tech. I paid and found them through Upwork. They increased my resume to three pages and said the length didn’t matter. Only content. They increased the summary, decreased keywords, and spaced things out more. He seemed to view the cover letter as more important. He said to keep the job history the same just change keywords at the top and a bit of summary for each job. He removed projects calling the portfolio link good enough. He also felt the most important thing on LinkedIn was the profile summary and didn’t talk about anything else regarding LinkedIn. Education at the bottom added four lines of classes below that. He called the people that did 5sec scans lazy and he spent the time necessary to find people. The third person was a freelancer who was claiming to be from a staffing contracting agency. Decreased summary to one line. Tried to force my job history into one page and then scanned my portfolio link projects and made a second page with a list of portfolio projects. However, when I ran the third person's rewrite into job sites like Adobe. The ats started throwing portfolio projects into the job history section and also broke the dates. He said I should limit my keywords to be more specialist in a specific area to make it less verity messy even if the job description came across as seeking multiple hats. 2-page resume. Education at the bottom ripped out classes. --- You also have to consider that when you submit a resume to a third party recruiter. They rewrite your resume without telling you and submit it to the hiring manager. I have seen so many variations from third parties that one of my questions in an interview is “What resume butchered variation did they give you?” And it always seems to catch the recruiter off guard if I send them my actual resume during the interview or try to do a screen share. In all cases the font size, font, and spacing were different. Just for the hell of it I also tried to submit my resume to those free resume reviews that job boards like to offer, and I got emails saying I didn't have enough action words, or keywords or my resume does not suit my experience, the resume is wrong and please pay for us. I email them back and the response is surprise or shock I went through other recruiters. So, what is the proper way to write a resume? I don’t know! What is the proper way to do linkedin. multiple tutorials later. Don't know. Seemed like I only got responses 98% "went with someone else" when I focused on my cover letter and simped are hard as possible for the company over any one of the resume variants. What annoys me is the rare chance I get in the interview. The interviewer who selected me acted like the never read my resume or viewed anything.

Interesting experiences, thanks for sharing. My impression from your summary alone: First person might have worked mainly with students going into tech. Second's cover letter might have been read when their massive resume wasn't - They needed the cover letter to get someone interested enough to read 3 pages of resume. Third, uh... Yikes. Maybe you can set some boundaries with recruiters going forward so you can tailor resumes to the type of position beforehand and then they can pull from that based on what the job title etc. fits best?

The recruiter *knows* it's YOU who sent him/her your resume and cover letter. So why is it written like someone else wrote it? That would be weird and off-putting to anyone reading it. And how does this other person know what you did, what you learned, etc.? Only *you* would know that. No, I think the third person format is awkward and disingenuous. Bad idea.

Also, I'm told that cover letters are passé, anyway. Out of style. Not really done anymore. A cover letter is just redundant text that the busy recruiter has to read in addition to your resume.

This dude sent me a ten page resume with a cover letter manifesto. Now why would I want to hire anybody like that?

Because they’re thorough? Because they cam bring a lot to the team? Because they want to work at your company and don’t know how to play the ATS game so they’ve included more instead of less in hopes that they’ll be noticed? You have a lot of applications to go through; if that’s your job then why are you complaining ?

So resume writing, like networking, is really just a scam. If you're not good at the mickey mouse bs like writing one, you should hire a service to do it; at which point, you're not going to get any better results. The hardest part of finding work is trying to get around the HR, recruiter, and headthunters dirtbags. Around them so you can have a real conversation with someone real, not get taunted, threatened and assautled cause you're not wearing the right colour tie.
