Allergy refers to abnormal reactions of the immune system to otherwise harmless substances. Normally, the immune system raises immune response to protect the body from foreign invaders, such as bacteria or viruses, but does not react to non-infectious environmental antigens. In people with allergies, however, the immune system also reacts to these substances, producing allergic reactions. Such substances, called allergens, can come from the patient’s natural environment, foods, medications, latex products, or insect bites.
Most allergies are mediated by a class of antibody called immunoglobulin E, IgE. IgE is produced when the body is first exposed to an allergen. Production of IgE is activated by a subtype of T-lymphocytes, known as type 2 helper T-cells, TH2. IgE molecules then bind to their receptors on the surface of mast cells and basophils. The first exposure is usually asymptomatic, but the body is now sensitized. Upon reexposure to the same antigen, the antigen binds to adjacent IgE molecules, bringing their receptors together, triggering a signaling cascade that induces the release of histamine and other inflammatory chemicals. These chemicals cause dilation and increased permeability of blood vessels, mucus secretion, stimulation of sensory nerves, smooth muscle spasms, and are responsible for allergic symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. Mild symptoms usually consist of watery eyes, runny nose, sneezing and a mild rash; while severe reactions may include swelling, hives, difficulty breathing due to bronchospasm, and digestive problems due to increased gastrointestinal motility. When released systemically, these chemicals can cause extensive vasodilation and smooth muscle spasms which may lead to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening condition in which blood pressure drops and airways narrow to a dangerous level.
The reactions are immediate, within minutes of contact with the allergen. There is also a late phase response, due to subsequent tissue infiltration with eosinophils and other inflammatory cells.
People who are sensitized to a specific allergen may also react to other substances that contain similar antigens. This is called cross-reactivity. For example, people who are allergic to birch pollen may also have reactions to certain fruits and vegetables such as apples or potatoes, consumption of which can cause itching and swelling of the lips and oral cavity.
Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to the development of allergic diseases.
Allergies tend to run in families. What is inherited is the susceptibility to allergic reactions, due to irregularities in the makeup of the immune system.
Early childhood exposures to bacterial and viral infections are thought to suppress TH2 cells and are therefore protective against allergic diseases. This theory, known as hygiene hypothesis, implies that living in too sterile an environment is a risk factor for allergic diseases. While still a hypothesis, it does partly explain the higher prevalence of allergies in developed countries. Other risks factors include exposure to allergens and stress.
Diagnosis is usually based on symptoms and patient’s history. Potential allergens may be identified with skin prick test or intradermal test, where small amounts of common allergens are introduced into the skin and local reactions are observed. A blood test, called allergen-specific serum IgE test, can also be performed. In this case, patient’s blood sample containing IgE is tested for binding to common allergens. If binding occurs, the person is allergic to that allergen.
Antihistamines are effective for treatment of mild allergies. Other drugs include mast cell stabilizers, corticosteroids and leukotriene modifiers. Severe reactions require immediate injection of epinephrine.
The best way to prevent allergies is to avoid the offending allergens. People with serious reactions to unavoidable allergens may benefit from immunotherapy. In immunotherapy, patients are injected weekly with gradually increasing doses of the allergen, starting with a tiny amount. This process desensitizes the immune system, reducing reactions to the allergen, but may take several years to complete.

Want to share my experience with allergen immunotherapy. I suffer from Relapsing Polychondritis, an immune-mediated inflammatory disease, I developed the disease at the age of 13 in the distant 2002 during the application of allergen-specific immunotherapy (SIT). Because allergen-specific immunotherapy causes changes in the immune system, it is possible that it may influence the induction of diseases mediated by the immune system, such as autoimmune diseases, even some doctors point to the induction of autoimmunity as one of the possible consequences of long term of the SIT. It appears that increased concentrations of IL-10 and TGF-B, as well as changes in the Th2/Th1 balance, could lead to autoimmune problems in people undergoing SIT. Relapsing Polychondritis is a Th1- and IL-10 mediated condition. In the medical literature there are several cases published over several years such as that of Dr. Ghorschi et al, “Manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis during subcutaneous allergen-specific immunotherapy”, “Scleroderma related to specific immunotherapy. Maciel BM Clinical Case, Morphine BM.” “Turkcapar N, M. Sjogren’s syndrome induced by specific immunotherapy.”, Pemphigoid-like reaction by allergen-specific immunotherapy: an unusual adverse reaction Margarita Tomás-Pérez, among others. The MDs, PhDs. Allan Linneberg and Andrzej Bozek carried out investigations where the cases of autoimmune disease that have occurred during or after the application of Specific Immunotherapy published in the medical literature are pointed out, their conclusion is that the development of autoimmune diseases in patients with allergic diseases undergoing SIT it is rare, but as a precautionary principle it is extremely important to evaluate people in terms of the risk of autoimmunity before the application of allergen-specific immunotherapy. There are several cases of people who have developed autoimmune diseases during this treatment, many of these cases have not been published, and as Dr. Linneberg mentions, it is a sensitive issue that important measures must be taken. In the main guidelines for the use of specific immunotherapy, such as the EAACI, the DGAKI and in the forums of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology AAAAI, the topic is mentioned. Research and published cases acknowledge the great ignorance and uncertainty that prevails in this area and calls for a strong precautionary principle in relation to allergen-specific immunotherapy and the risk of autoimmune diseases. I was treated negligently by an allergist member of the National Council of Clinical Immunology and Allergy (CONICA) in Mexico, my case was not published in the literature. My health was destroyed by Allergen Specific Immunotherapy and a negligent Allergist.

Now I carry epi pens on me and yesterday I used one of them on the phone with 911 . This is scary . My face has been swelling and hives and I don’t know how far it goes . To my throat or mouth or anything else . I’m just learning about all this now . Allergy free my entire life and now there’s something happening with my body 😔

Actually you have allergy from dust mites, Let me explain, When you lying on your bed your skin dander; which is unable to see from naked eyes , deposit on your pillow and this is the food for dust mites. They grew in much lesser time into large amount and when you breath , They reach into your alveoli and then ultimately into the blood stream , There the protein present on them react with your blood and then all the allergic symptoms appear. Try to put your pillow cover in sunlight and put them into dettol solution. Also do this with bedsheet.

I think many times what we call an allergie is actually a buildup of things that on a micro scale is needed or at least tolerated in the body but in larger amounts are toxic or deadly . I started having a reaction to eggs and onions after eating egg sandwiches every single day for years , and I became so sensitive that I almost died from not being able to breathe from a very small amount . But I did an elimination diet to figure it out and by not eating that for several years have become much less sensitive ! I think the culprit was a buildup of sulfur . I just wanted to let people know that there sensitivity , maybe reversable , by eliminating the rite foods !
